Multiplat AFL 23: Launch Thread (Xbox release date TBC)

STATE OF PLAY:

• The game is out for Steam and PlayStation. There have been issues with Xbox release and it is unclear when the game will be available.
• Big Ant are aware that there are playability issues & bugs at present.
• Content has been temporarily removed from the game to identify where the issues lie.
• This content will be re-introduced via patches in the coming days.
• Big Ant have released a summary of what is to be reintroduced, which can be seen below.

Actually they probably should have done this. You can test in-house all day long, but nothing shows up issues and bugs like having it used by people out in the wild.

With Cricket 24 due out next month (at the same time as the Xbox version of AFL 23 haha), and with Ross spending the lead up to the launch of AFL 23 in India on Cricket 24 duties, and with Cricket 24 guaranteed to rake in a lot more money than AFL 23 even if it had launched in an acceptable state, how much resources are people seriously expecting Big Ant to devote to this shambles when the real money maker is a month away?

So when both players in the ruck contest start their run up.... and continue past the ball in the air and both do a bowling motion animation we will know they got their games mixed up

What was launched would have absolutely have been picked up in-house, if they bothered to actually test what was released. It's not like we're talking obscure, hard to find bugs here.

Theres 3 other BA games coming out this year. Cricket 24 will definitely be more profitable, rugby and tiebreak probably would be too. But no clue why people think AFL 23 will cop x amount of attention when BA have more profitable opportunities ahead. It is a business after all. I could very much see this game being right down the priority list quite quickly once its at an "acceptable" level.

A lot of these issues are very common though, so they absolutely should have been picked up in their testing before the larger user base tested it for them.

I don't know why people keep saying this about this release... It makes sense for small bugs and weird interactions but this game is visibly broken within seconds of playing a game by the looks. It is just a totally irrelevant statement

I don't understand BA business model. What a efn disgrace not 'officially' apologizing or even updating the xbox community at all. They're alienating a third of their consumer base. I'm glad I didn't suffer the gut wrenching box opening yesterday but this just feels like a snub. Where's our explanation.........?

Let me clear this up.
I don't like broken games, but the game plays a bit better that some are suggesting.
Is it a mess at the moment? Yes it is. But it's been explained why it is in the state it is. But signs are there to know it will be a good game.

Admittedly, after the PS5 patch today the game is in a much better state than yesterday but that’s not saying much but I can at least play consecutive matches now without crashing.

Still some major issues though:

• Player responsiveness is still shockingly bad;
• Tackles barely ever work;
• Switching players is random as;
• Handballs are basically useless.

On the bright side there are some moments of great build up play and goals but right now they’re few-and-far between. When you can actually get some of the fundamentals of the game to work, it’s pretty bloody fun.

The question is, how long if ever, will it take BA to sort it all out.

I’m still struggling with tackles after the patch they just don’t seem to land. Does anyone else have that issue? Everything else is feeling a lot better.

I’ve been doing the old Evo trick of switching players last second to let the cpu tackle.

The gameplay is basically fine now but there’s no content in this game
Online if you get a match will crash at the first goal and you can’t even play a mate
Season mode you can’t select line ups & crowd numbers are always laughably low
Management mode will just crash at the first game
This is a beta early access game that is also broken

In absolute terms, it’s bad. I have faith that the majority of the issues will be fixed, but do I want to spend hours playing a wonky game? No.

Thoughts after PS5 patch

AI is definitely better. had a close game which was good.

Still have the following issues

Players on rails, still doesnt feel responsive, turning circles are crazy for supposed professional athletes, just feels like im not in control.
All opposition hitouts seem to go straight to a player, had 18 hitouts with 18 hitouts to advantage, i really dont understand how to win a hitout, wish there was an old fashioned manual to tell you how to do it.
Player switching either doesnt work or is so laggy its to late by the time it decides to switch
Ai seems to tackle you when you are clear enough to get a kick away, seems once the ai tackle animation kicks in its not going to let you get a kick away no matter what

UI

Please give us a scoreboard/stats screen between quarters. its jarring going straight from one quarter to the next. i used to use this screen to also make changes to the team.
The latest patch has added a game summary option when pausing, but still has no player stats.
Stats at end of season game are bugged, redman shows 14 disposals with 9 marks in the season leader category, but on the end game screen he has 5 disposals.

Ok a few quick notes after playing the game again now with the new patch:

• if tackling works its hard to execute. Tried both pressing and holding Triangle but not much luck
• the open goal glitch is still there. The AI will chase but when within reach they drop off (played on Medium)
• the whole formation bug (everyone running off screen) is still there
• interchanges/subs still don’t seem to be working (I recommend changing your team pre-game, thats what you’ll be stuck with)

All this being fixed would make it easily the best AFL game ever in my opinion. Still runs smoothly, looks great and feels like footy when it’s not glitching.
