This is the exact reason why only 1 result has been changed after the fact in the AFL era. That result was only changed because it was later proved that St. Kilda had scored the match altering point after the siren. The fact is that with all close losses the Crows have had in the last 5 years with a controversial umpiring decision late in the match going against them you can point to a questionable umpiring decision that favoured them late in that game as well. As would be the case in a vast majority of those types of matches (only reason I didn't say all is that I can't remember every single instance of this in the last 5 years). Only remember the Adelaide one's because of the air play that those losses have received in the Adelaide media and because I live in a family of Crows supporters.Assuming Rankine uses his full 30s allotment before kicking the behind, then we have posession of the ball with scores level and approximately 1:10 on the clock. Could the two teams then pin the ball for 70 seconds and cause a draw? Yes. Could Gold Coast go down the other end and score a point/goal to win the game? Yes. Could Adelaide cause a turnover and score a point/goal to win it? Yes.
Literally any result could have happened if the mark/free kick was paid and Rankine kicked a behind. So again, you can't definitively say that the umpire's decision (or lack thereof) with 1:45 on the clock decided the result of the game IF Rankine had gone on to kick a behind. 1:10 is more than enough time for a team to go coast to coast and every footy fan knows that.
I'll also point out that there are other possible scenarios (albeit unlikely) involving Rankine kicking the ball short and it getting marked on the line / spilling over the boundary for a throw in or even a kick out on the full and the Crows remain behind by 1 point in those possible scenarios with approximately 1:10 on the clock. I'll state the obvious that the Suns could have done exactly what they did and wound down the clock to hold on for a 1 point win in those marked on the line / spill over the boundary / out on the full scenarios OR the Crows could have caused a turnover and snatched a win / draw.
There was just too much time on the clock for anyone to say definitively that the result would have been different if the umpires had blown the whistle with 1:45 to go.
