Toast A tribute to Max Rooke

No matter what! No matter whether Rooke had a short career, didn't get enough of the ball, or any other criticism, Rooke is a Geelong Cats god! A legend! Adored! Revered! Still loved, adored + revered! Anything less is pure BS! The haters are blind!

So that would pretty much fill the cup on the Max Rooke front....

I guess the subtle suggestion didnt work so well... and it was subtle so all's fair...

Time to get onto 2018 topics...

first and last goal in the '09 GF
Because:

"Yep, this is the Birregurra watering hole - the only one in the township of 700 people - which made headlines yesterday when one of Geelong's grand final heroes, Max Rooke, who hails from Casterton, revealed he was doubly happy with the two goals he scored in the season decider because the Royal Mail's publican, Robert McCurdy, had agreed pre-game to shout every drinker in the bar a pot every time the bearded Cat star kicked a goal.

It's history now that not only did Rooke get the Royal Mail festivities off to a rollicking start by booting the first major of the match but, as if to ensure the drinkers had a free ale to celebrate the flag, a couple of hours later he slotted through the final goal of the game as well.

''I didn't think he'd even try to kick the last one, what with the game already decided but I was glad for the boys in the bar that he did, and they roared when he dribbled it through,'' McCurdy said yesterday. ''All up I reckon I gave away 200 pots. It was all good fun.''

Rooke revealed after the game he almost didn't take the final kick and instead thought of keeping the ball for a memento but in the end did so, not least because a mate of his had told him of the Birregurra publican's free pots vow ''so I thought I'd help them out''."

What a guy!

"MAX Rooke’s goal after the final siren of Saturday’s AFL grand final cost bookmakers close to a million dollars. . .The former Casterton footballer kicked the first and last goals of the game as well as a crucial behind which sewed up Geelong’s premiership win.In the final couple of seconds, with Geelong six points up, Rooke took a mark on the Geelong half-forward flank. The siren sounded and the St Kilda players walked off. Rooke dribbled through the goal for a final margin of 12 points — 12.8 (80) to St Kilda’s 9.14 (68)."

"Geelong Cats cult hero Max Rooke keeps on giving for supporters
MAX Rooke is always thinking of others.
When he kicked the first goal of the AFL grand final, he was doing it for the punters who backed him to do it.
His last goal, kicked after the final siren, was executed for the boys at Birregurra's Royal Mail Hotel.
"I didn't know what to do, really (when the siren sounded) but I just remembered that a mate of mine told me that the Birregurra pub was shouting free pots all around every time I kicked a goal, so I thought I'd help them out," Rooke said.
"Once again (with the first goal), I was just trying to help some people out. A lot of people backed me for the first goal, so I was happy to help." the Cats cult hero said at Skilled Stadium yesterday."

Max Rooke is the 'eternal' Geelong Cats cult hero! In 2007! In 2009! Still in 2018!

cause its preseason and the topics have meandered thru various off season tangents....

Im sure all will right itself this week with training getting back on the road again.

Would it be a good idea to move it to an appropriate thread so as people don't have to skim past petty arguments to find some pre-season news.

I must have missed it mate. Cheers.

There’s a universe of talent, and some shine brightly, predictably, dependably.

Some, just some, burn across the sky like a meteor and we marvel at their uniqueness, brightness, and unpredictability.

Different shows, but both as breathtaking as the other.

Endless analysis erodes the enjoyment and belittles the talent.

Enjoy the game for what it is. A game. A competition of skill, endeavour and strategy, but no more than that.

OMG! Our tributes to Max Rooke were removed from this thread!:eek::eek:

They were the BEST posts of THIS thread!

:'(:'(:'(

For the 3rd time - and now you are taking the piss - the Max Rooke topic is more than welcome to be discussed in this thread.

It has no relevance to the 2018 preseason thread.

Feel free to continue it here.

And seeing there is nothing good in the 2018 thread, you'll not be posting in there for a bit.

We are not doing this again.

I get what you're saying, but did we really miss him that much?

He only played 8 games in 2007, and we stomped all over the competition. The tackle in the Grand Final remains an awesome moment - especially if you were up that end of the ground (and I was). I do think he was far more integral to the team in 2008 and particularly 2009. He only played one game in 2010, and the side still won 17 games and finished 2 points off top spot. Then after he retired we won the flag in 2011.

I think it's a case where multiple statements are true. He was integral for two seasons in particular for me (2008 and 2009), but I don't think he was as important as he's portrayed. Still a fantastic servant of the club though. And back to the starting point, a very different player to Scott Selwood. Rooke could play on ball and as a defensive forward. Don't see Selwood ever playing the second role, and he shouldn't be expected to either.

As was i, poetry in motion on a day that is amongst my more memorable in history!

Bucket list tick.

Im not sure about hate - look at my Title to see where my feelings lie - :D

But what I took Partridge to infer was that while Max has been posted as the hard wild man of Borneo - and he was - is that his career and influence was not as long and wide reaching as some would indicate.

If there was a Robin Hood film nearby Daz just split the arrow. That's exactly it.

Id also that his style of play in that window identified closely with a good amount of supporters and they identify with, and perhaps lament its absence to this day.

While we're here does anyone know where to find that photo of Tom Harley's bucks party? Everyone is in the photo all looking suited up and nice with the exception of Max who looks like he's been up for 48 hours. If you've seen the photo you'll remember it trust me.

Updating the link from the OP.
What a gun he was, I reckon Cocky has just a bit of Rooke about him....

How good is that. Thank you Mr Rooke, Dad, for persisting and cajoling the GFC to look at his boy. He may not have been the most skillful to ever don the hoops but he was tough and hard and did whatever was needed to win. The photo of him taking the mark parallel to the ground is great.
The 09 GF a testament to him. Thanks Maxie.

Massive Max Love. I remember someone on this forum had an online t-shirt site sell T's of his face in a silhouette and after a couple of weeks Max's agent shut it down. I still have my baby blue Max T somewhere.

I think Tom Stewart is the closest thing we have now to the Max but probably won't have the sheer core power Max had. Not many do.

Rooke is the type of player that every good to great team needs. He's not in the side for his stats, he's in for a bouquet of intangibles that contribute to a complete team. Having some talent or skill is a bonus. Him, Mooney, maybe Milburn had it varying proportions and qualities. And they complimented the out and out skillful players well.
IMHO
