They have been annoying their neighbours for quite a few years. And by annoy, I mean their navy has been actively sinking Vietnamese and Filipino fishing vessels in "disputed" waters, around atols and islands China wants to claim as their own. Their army regularly runs live fire training exercises across the Vietnamese border, in the mountainous region between the two countries. Trust me, Vietnam and China are not friends. They do the same in the Himalayas, on the Indian border, where there has been a number of clashes between both armies.

China dammed the Mekong river for hydro, that negatively effects the rest of southeast asia. They're going to do the same with the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) River in the Himalayas, which will impact India and Bangladesh, which rely on the Brahmaputra for agriculture, hydropower, and drinking water.

And China is active in trying to buy off most of the pacific island nations.

China is no longer asleep. It's not out stomping it's neighbours just yet, but year on year they become more bold in what they try and get away with, continually pushing boundaries, as no nation actively hits back.
Not to mention the world’s inaction to protect Ukraine empowering them to look towards Taiwan.
They are looking very carefully at that opportunity.

Lessons from History
How not to respond to dictators.
Quick check that you realise that that is precisely the thinking from the Russian perspective that led to the SMO with NATO as the dictatorial element, the Minsk agreement as the useless piece of paper and the ukraine as the Sudetenland yes?

(not specific as to which side is interpreting more correctly but the concept doesn't both ways)

In this weeks episode of "whats ****ed up in the United Shitshow of America"

  • we have a Federal judges orders implicitly ignored by the White House.
  • we have Republicans issuing impeachment bills against a Federal judge because they don't like his ruling.
(Do not laugh off those 2 points - that is the start of a very serious constitutional crisis for the US).
  • we have bills introduced that effectively rule disagreeing with or disliking Donald Trump a certifiable mental disorder in Minnesota.
  • we have the Republican who introduced the above bill being arrested for soliciting a minor while he introduced those bills - but trans and drag queens are the issue remember...
  • we have Elon Musk donating over $100million to MAGA after Donalds little car yard demo

I will however concede one thing with Trump. Appointing Karoline Leavitt as spokeperson is a stroke of sheer genius. Watching reporters try and have any sort of meaningful discussion with that vacuous, brainwashed sycophant lurches from humorous to terrifying to having a small modicum of admiration.

The way she can stonewall and articulate lie after lie after lie with heartfelt conviction is astounding. Watching her straight faced defend tariffs as tax cut for the American people left me speechless. And she did it with passion. The press just give up... it's utterly pointless.

Sheer brilliance from Trump.

I can't help but wonder if Trumps whole idiotic approach to Putin is to try and out friendly China with him. I feel like it's giving him WAY WAY too much credit but maybe he thinks if he can buddy up to Russia he can stymie China's influence.

It's doomed to spectacular failure either way. Putin has Trump - and the US - exactly where he wants them.

And to make it all even more senseless, some of the recent polls (as unreliable as they are) are showing an increasing popularity of Trump and his policies. Albeit from a very low base but with all that is happening and the financial market assessment, it is gobsmacking.

They are hovering around the high 40% mark which is actually historically low for a new President at this point in his term. Usually newly elected Presidents are often in the 50-60% with some in the 70's so it's not great. It's high for him - just not many others.

More worrying is the piss poor showing of the Dems in those polls. Clearly the left leaning voters are seething at thier lack of fight - and the capitulation on the budget prelim bill reinforces it - against Trump and his policies.

I can't understand it personally. They have zero to gain hiding away and going quietly into the night. They need to grow some balls very quickly, find out what they stand for and oppose oppose and oppose. Right now they don't look like they have a clue let alone look like an alternative.

I must admit I've always thought it's a bit of an oddity of American politics that they put all their eggs into the basket of trying to be the president. And then if they lose they just sort of fade away to nothing. Like, Hillary Clinton didn't stick around to be "opposition leader" after 2016, just as Trump didn't after 2020 and Kamala Harris now. To me it's no surprise they lack direction; there doesn't seem to be any real hierarchy of anybody really in a position to provide that direction.

Definitely a different system... I'm happy to stick with ours 100% where the excesses get reigned in by parliament.

The leadership vacuum for the Dems is made worse by the 2 leaders - Jefferies in the House and Schummer in the Senate doing whatever the hell they want.

The house blocked all of the prelim budget stuff with Jefferies saying they would never pass it.

Nekminut

Schummer encourages Senate Dems to pass it because it's the lesser of 2 evils.

That may be the case but they look disjointed and clueless. They need to get their shit together in a real hurry and actually offer opposition to what's going on and give the 50%+ of the population hope that they are not descended rapidly into fascism.

It must be terrifying to be an American right now. Their President is just doing whatever he wants, whether it is legal or not. Whether you agree with his policies and politics or not shouldn't matter. He and his party are trying to impeach judges for holding up the law because it isn't what they want. It's insanity over there. I was strongly against people comparing him to Hitler last time he was president but some his moves this term have been right out of Hitlers' playbook and worse than that we are like 2 months in.

Worse than that, they are deporting people to El Salvador, after paying $6m to keep them in a prison. The prison is arguably the worst prison in the world. It is a death sentence for everyone going there. I am against illegal immigration but they DO NOT deserve to go to a prison like CECOT. These people deported to this prison, not to their actual homeland, the majority of which are unlikely to be hardened gang members and criminals will be not only lucky to make it out alive, but lucky to make it out ever. They will be beaten and r*ped consistently I'm sure. This is a prison with constant human rights violations. IT IS INDEFENSIBLE. Then add to that, Trump praises Nayib Bukele for his inhumane practices. For me this is the worst thing Trump and his administration has done. Deporting is one thing, but to send them to one of the most dangerous prisons in the world? Where by all reports the inmates run the asylum? Unconscionable

Trump and his Tech Handlers are dismantling the role of Congress and concentrating power to the Oval Office and a select few.

Meanwhile Russia and China sit back and laugh.

China saw the corporate influence in politics issue a mile off and nipped it in the bud. Old Jack Ma had to go through some re-education. They didn’t want all these tech and other corporate billionaires controlling commerce in China and in-turn gaining enough influence to start bullying the government. It’s why chinas tech sector has gone quiet and is only starting to re-emerge now.

China and the US are at the extreme opposite ends on this issue, the answer is somewhere in the middle. You don’t want to have a system that either country has.

The problem is that it favours the pollies and the companies to have the US system. There is no reason for any that can change it to change it.

Now you have big Pharma AND big Tech in Trumps ear telling him to penalize Australia and apply selective tariffs to punish us for our domestic policies... We are the new Canada.

Let's see if we have the balls they do to stand up to him and retaliate.

One things for certain, Dutton would rather gobble him than stand up to him.

Also Big Beef.

Basically anyone who sees that they can make more money by reducing our exports or neutralising Australia-internal policies like the PBS or social media laws.

Some, most or all of these people (the deported Venezuelans) are probably bad but that's beside the point. The most concerning aspect of this sorry episode is the total lack of due process, one of the fundamental tenets of the US Constitution.

The Executive branch of the Government( Trump/Musk) in the first instance, totally ignored it's co-equal branch of Government ,the Judiciary and in the second instance thumbed it's nose at it, when a Federal Court Judge ordered the Government NOT to proceed with any more deportations and to TURN AROUND ANY PLANES THAT WERE ALREADY IN THE AIR. As to the third co-equal branch of Government, Congress, house Republicans have already sold out out and trashed whatever principles they once had to the cult of Trump so can be relied on to hide in a corner while the "King" does as he pleases.

If you are living in the US and are part of any minority group that Trump disapproves of, you should indeed be afraid.

If due process doesn't exist for the 200 Venezuelans spirited away, it doesn't exist for anyone in the United States.

Who is the next group to be "disappeared" from or incarcerated in the US?

Gays? trans people,? the disabled?, dissenting voices in the media? and even Federal Judges whom the Orange tyrant deems "nasty"?

That might sound a bit far fetched to some but once due process disappears it's not much of a stretch to a totalitarian Fascist state.

God help America if these loonies continue testing and exceeding the boundaries set out in thier Constitution

It feels like we are living in the alternative timeline when Biff gets his hands on the Sports Almanac

EDIT: Given that the article was written in 2015, it was really quite prophetic.

The Dems had a “strategy” of letting Trump do what he wants and then let hell rain down on their country. They then ride over the hill like the cavalry, sweep the mid term elections and regain some control. Then springboard to the presidency on a “Clean up this freakin mess” platform. That was fine when he was just a greedy idiot. Now he’s a greedy idiot surrounded by clever people with a dangerous agenda. Dems need to reassess very quickly.

Trump wants civil unrest so he can declare martial law and avoid elections.

If you had said that before this shit show started, people of reasonable intelligence would have branded you a conspiracy idiot. Now I suspect it is a possible outcome. One just has to hope that the judiciary and the congress will be able to halt this when it simply becomes too crazy. Just not sure where that line is yet.
