AFL Player # 9: Dylan Shiel - Sticking around for 2025, training in the backline - 18/10

Was a very up and down game. Did a few good things but also looked like he was in self preservation mode a few times which was a poor look. Slaughtered three kicks which resulted in really bad turnovers . Did hit a few good ones as well. Has to be a lot better if he is going to hold the role. Anyway if he doesnt we have SEH and Zack Johnson in the wings.
Harsh thing to say but maybe it is good long term if he does fail. Anway I am still prepared to wait and watch and see what happens in the next 3 or 4 weeks.

Wasn’t just his disposal, he was a spectator too many times. Disappointing from a senior player.

He was solid last year when he was used in the middle and up forward due to his solid frame (despite limited TOG)

Problem is he has NEVER been defensive minded and prefers to jog in to defense like McGrath and we are trying to turn him in to a defender when he is already 31.

Square peg in a round hole purely for the sake of playing him.

Shiel’s best footy was always as someone who could break away from contest with pace …. I’m not convinced he’s gonna make it down back for you. Is he done?

Still decent as a mid we just have too many small mids.

Will hopefully cross 100 games this year then stick around as a VFL player depth next season

That was the story with a few players last night. We have quite a few who are in self preservation mode, knowing that they are playing for their careers. Also we looked like we were still blowing the cobwebs out.that extra game that dawks had was really to their advantage. We’ve got winnable games coming up, but will need to improve in the little things.

The spectator part stood out for sure. As you say disappointing for a senior player.

Never liked the idea from the start. Stringer was moved on to open up opportunities in the forward 50 then we take away an opportunity by putting Shiel down back. I’m not sure there is a spot for him at his age and where we are at as a team.

He was rough last night, especially with some really ugly, simple turnovers. I do think you’ve got to give him at least a month of footy off half back before making any judgements around his position in the side. If after then it’s still as rough as it was last night, then he’s done and you’re probably moving him off the list at seasons end. I’m not prepared to say it is a failed experiment after 1 game.

It’s on Saad, Johnson etc. to force their hand at VFL level to take his spot. I expect Saad might get a run sooner rather than later.

I sometimes think our coach is a bit full of shit when he talks about list rebuilds, culture and setting standards.
