Got him at a time there was perceived pressure to “land a big fish”

His hands are about as good as a fish’s

Clang clang

Just never a one touch player. Unlike some I don’t knock his endeavour or hardness, he just lacks class

Pies have Pendlebury as an elder statesman. Cats have Danger & Cameron etc. Swans have had their batch. Brisbane Zorko. All champions.

EFC have Shiel
Sorry, but you’re off base on this one. Truly scared of physical contact, which is the main reason he’s fumbly, and he has basically admitted to it in interviews in the past. He used to have a regular bit on RSN radio where he said things like “no one likes physical contact”. Yeah nah

Edit: also, there are times he’s physical’ - typically when someone is open (arms up) going for the ball and Shiel can drop his shoulder into a soft target’s chest, and Shiel himself is guaranteed to not get hurt. Basically fake tough hitting someone when they are playing the ball. Then ppl remember the hit and think he’s occasionally physical. Not IMHO though

and we wasted 2 decent picks on a fair weather stroller.

Shiel had an AA appearance and dildoro got sucked in like a nuffie.

However our saving grace from that trade is that we picked up Caldwell for cheap (Giants picked him up with one of the picks) and the other pick was a bust. Duursma was from the same draft as well. Didn't burn us as bad as it could've. We got let off that mistake lightly. The key is to learn from it and never do it again.

I called for Shiel to play at half-half back, as he has the physical tools to play the role well. Overall though, I think it was wrong. Primarily because I didn’t anticipate the extent to which he would hear footsteps and truly be scared of contact from behind, with a complete refusal to be responsible for a man, and just be a panic merchant generally, particularly by hand. He’s also very poor aerially, like prior.
I thought he could use his speed and kicking, as he was an elite kick last year statistically, but he seems to prefer hand-balling more in the back line, and just making it someone else’s problem.
I’d play him as a pressure forward, as he is a nice kick for goal and still pretty quick. Otherwise, he has basically checked out, and if we plan on playing him elsewhere, he may as well not play. Just taking the spot of a kid (not that we have many options instead of him).

Imagine being a leading forward with a midfield of Parish, Shiel and Tsatas kicking to you.
Pagans paddock. Kick it over their heads 😛

The trade did little damage it was just useless. But I thought we'd have seen the last of him by now. For me he's the turd that won't flush. What are we doing? Every team has agile quick half forwards that will tear you apart if you can't defend them. Do you expect Shiel to defend like his life depends on it. You need to match them step by step, and they don't move in straight lines. You need to match them for strength and agility in marking contests and have the composure to fist the ball away when slightly out positioned. We need proper defenders. The fact that we have shoehorned 32 years old Shiel into such a critical position, getting him to 100 games(!) Just shows you what a joke of a club we are.
