Standing behind the goals at Metricon tonight, i glanced at the old bloke standing next to me, and noticed his members scarf said he'd been a member of the pies for 50 years.
Not sure how common that is, but the more i thought about it on the way home, the more it blew my mind.
When he bought his first membership the Sherrin Stand hadn't been built at Victoria Park yet, and VFL park didn't yet exist. Len Thompson and Peter McKenna were just starting their careers.
I consider myself a pretty fanatical Collingwood supporter but imagine how many games this bloke must have been to, especially as he made the effort to attend at Gold Coast aged about 70.
He was happy to stand and towards the end of the last quarter cranked up his smartphone so he could listen to the post match summary on the radio.
Also, being a member/season ticket holder wasn't such a big thing in days gone by, as it was so easy to just pay at the gate and sit/stand where ever you wanted.
Anyhoo, i tips my lid to this bloke.

My grandfather was a colourful identity and heavily involved at Hawthorn for many years.

Mum, as a small kid, started barracking for Collingwood instead. She trekked off to Vic Park from the early fifties until they shut the ground.

She queued overnight for finals tickets. Hatred of Carlton was a defining aspect of her personality. We stood/froze at the 1979 GF and on the train home to Frankston all she could mutter was 'bloody Carlton'. Harmes, Harris and later Elliott were despised.

1958 was the greatest day of her life. 1990 brought tears of relief and joy. Her all time favourites: Bobby Rose, Billy Picken and Tony Shaw. She loved Tony because he was in the face of the opposition and got the most of his talent.

Mum's understanding of tactics did not evolve beyond: 'just kick it' and 'don't touch him'. In her eyes, Collingwood never received fair umpiring in any game. Never.

At her funeral the club song played twice. Eddie McGuire had been kind to her. She would have loved the 2010 team beyond belief.

I still have her Members' scarf.

As much as I despise you, even I had to admit that that's a lovely post.

Don't get soft, dickhead

Edit: ottoman expect you will now further derail this thread with something about ACDC or how your girlfriend lets you give her pedicures

F**k you.
I'm posting about AC/DC playing on the radio while you're telling soft **** stories about bullshit romantic ties to the pies.
Oh by the way they are playing this song at the moment. Is Cohen a legend or what?

Waiting outside the MCG after 1990 gf to meet my mates, there were some old ladies waiting for their friends at the same spot. Going by the members badges on their scarves they had clearly been members through the entire 32 years. Their friend turned up and quietly said "they did it" and they all burst into tears.
Bloody awesome.

My brother and I just got 3 game memberships because we want to attend the finals... I've been watching at home the last few years but before that I was an AFL member with club support for a long time.

My brother wore the scarf that says "member for 1 year" and it's a huge stupid thing to put on a scarf, he asked me how to rip it off :)

Out of interest, is there any way of finding out which Collingwood Bigfooty members have been around for the longest?

Well I bought my first membership in 1977.
Back then you just turned up at the ground & paid cash over the counter for a Seasons ticket...no records kept.
So I was a member from 1977 but can’t prove it...although I did buy a Grand Final ticket (twice) with my membership in 77, however doubt the club has any record of that.
I joined the Social Club in 1980 (which the Club should have records).
Congrats to the 50 year membership gent...I believe he will become a Life Member now??

Since we've started to come good this year I was considering buying a membership for next year however I'm not always available to go to games and I feel like its a bit too much for me to not go to 75% of games. Anyone in/has been in the same boat?
Yes...me.
I live in Singapore...lucky if I get back for a game or two during the season.
But I sign up every year. It’s my way of contributing from afar.
I’ll be back one day & will then take full advantage of the membership (either that or I’ll microwave it, if we lose another Grand Final).
