Injured and no
Ah that’s a shame. He probably had about 12 quarters of pure quality over last year. If he could keep that same level over 6 games which is about double of last year you would keep him on the list. Agree with others that his kicking skills (field and goal) is top notch. I hope he has the chance to attack a decent block of games because the quality is definitely there.

I hope this is an old photo, coming back from a navicular with noodle arms might fall afoul of Brad's professional lifestyle standards!
A month or two of VFL for he and Jayden and who knows, we might be getting some depth in Menzies spot. Just in time for our guaranteed top-8 finish 😎

So stoked for him to be back. IMO is by far and away our best small forward prospect and has the ceiling/attributes to be one of the most dangerous in the comp, if he can get a clear run at it.
Interesting, I haven't seen enough of him to have any idea about his ceiling, but I don't generally see the forum raving about him having the potential to be one of the most dangerous in the comp. What lends you to this opinion?

Blimey! I love him, but most dangerous in the comp... Here's hoping. I do think he's possibly already a top 5 kick on our list.

The combination of his attributes. Aerial ability, clean hands, ability to kick intuitive goals, kicking inside 50. Most small forwards in the comp currently are pretty much nippy small mids with little forward craft. His problem was always a low fitness base, so his injury has set him back a lot and will probably take him the better part of this year to get back to it. But based on his VFL trajectory from last year, I'd have no doubt he'd be best 22 currently, If he had avoided injury.

How did he go?
Only played second half, 4 touches 2 tackles. Probably would have been better off playing first half when the game was in our forward line.

Red Black and Blue said in today's game day thread that Wanganeen looked good. I agree.

The obvious problem with that assessment is that he's had the ball 7 times and he's kicked 1 goal. I'm not saying he had a good game (and I don't think RBB is either).

RBB said it was heavily managed game time. That makes sense because he's returning from injury (having played his first half a game last week). But that's not something that can be picked up from the stream so I don't know that to be the case.

It's the way he can stand his ground physically / absorb contact but use his agility and burst of speed to set up play that really caught my eye. He is also a really good kick of the ball. If he can get that game up to 15 possessions and 3 to 6 tackles, which I do not believe is far away if he's playing full game time, his impact would be profound.

That said, it's been the same scenario since he first made it onto the list. It's year 3 now so he has to put the theory into practice. Let's see what happens in the next few weeks. I might go as far as saying that I think he could be a better prospect than both Daveys. That's not a negative comment as I see obvious potential in all 3. His combination of agility, strength, aggression and skill is pretty rare.

He won't make it as a small forward, just doesn't get involved enough

Maybe its time to move to HB ?
You have basically seen him play 90% of his games based around n no fitness base. I would say jury is out still but he fades out of games because he keeps missing most of pre season.
It is more like he will not make it because he keeps getting injured.
If you only have half a tank of petrol then you are going to run out quicker.

I don't really judge games on touches. I love that Richmond model mindset of effectiveness rather than productivity. That model routinely saw them win games with fewer possessions than most teams because of tap ons, effective pressure, aerial competitiveness eliminated the need for unnecessary possessions. That model relied on their small forwards and yet none of them found the ball a lot.

There's lots of actions in the game that are more effective than getting a possession and Tex has a lot of that in his game. On top of the fact he is very effective when he has the ball. He will only need to average 12 touches to be 2 goal 2 assist player.

While neither were actually in the bests, I thought his influence today was slightly less than Guelfi who had twice the touches.

that's 90% his issue then, staying fit. I see fleeting moments of brilliance but those credits have been used up imho. Stay fit, play half a dozen good to very good VFL games, play a couple of AFL games where you show something and id reconsider but at the moment he is coming from a long way back

It is but you can not complain about him not being involved enough . He simply doesn't have the fitness base. I said at the time the injury will probably make it hard for him as it will take 6 to 8 weeks to find some consistent form and even then he will not have enough base work under him.

in hindsight, probably right (re judgement call on making it or not) but if he wants to continue he's got 6 months left.

Not sure if anyone at the club is aware of this but his dad was a pretty good running defender.

He looks an absolute natural behind the footy as a run and carry player.
