Expansion 3rd Sydney AFL side prediction

Are we closer, further or pretty much at the same place we were when the last post was made in 2012 ( above ) about a 3rd Sydney AFL team ?.
When this last post was made, the Western Sydney Wanderers juggernaut was only 3 months old.

They keep losing grand finals, but there's no denying their rise has been phenomenal.

So to answer your question, I think we are closer, yes, but the rise of WSW represents a massive speed hump that is now sitting on the road to a third Sydney AFL team.

Teams at Wollongong, Canberra, Newcastle, Sunshine Coast, Townsville and Cairns would all have a greater contribution to the AFL than Tasmania as the 19th team.
I'm from Wollongong (hence my name) and being an AFL supporter here is akin to leprosy. There's a local league that does well but some clubs struggle to get numbers on the paddock. My kids play juniors and I've coached them but numbers fluctuate there as well. This is Rugby League heartland even more so than Sydney and any venture here would be folly.

We don't need three Sydney teams finishing top four every year and no one watching them
Gawd, that one again.

1. What is the most-watched NSW sporting team of any sport? (I'll give you a clue; it's the Sydney Swans.)

2. The three most-viewed AFL/VFL grand finals in Australian TV sport history were 2005, 2006, and 2012. What is the common denominator of all three?

We could have had the top 4 if we didn't all turn out tvs off at the 15 min mark of the 2nd quarter in 2014 gf.

Swans are the most watched NSW team in terms of people attending games, but they are certainly not the most watched in terms of TV viewers.

You may be right; I wouldn't know for sure, but I wasn't trying to blow the Swans' trumpet so much as point out that there most certainly is an AFL audience here.

My reading of the tea leaves leaves 2 places in Sydney, one North or one south/south west

A club North incorporates the CC and possibly Newcastle, the one S/SW is probably a better bet as the Northern club may be to disjointed.

Huge population in the S/SW that GWS cannot possibly manage, bugger all footy down there at senior or junior level - plenty- plenty -plenty of room for growth :)

I reckon we are talking 10 years.

Something tells me you're a local!
The Ponds :thumbsu:

Baulko Kookas back in the day.
I would've had the 2nd team out here 10 years ago.

It's not as viable now with GWS taking such a chunk of land.
Central coast / Newcastle / north coast is probably the way to do it in reality now.

The G stands for Greater.

Encompassing all of the west, from the north-west to the south west.

The south is Swans territory.

Coffs Harbour and surrounds has a healthy NEAFL comp, supporters of AFL and is used by the Swans for preseason training camp each year.
