Yes. And he’s been shocking last 3 weeks. Dow has been playing well in the twos and currently deserves a game ahead of Noah. Yes, play different roles but others can be moved forward to accommodate Dow, a player showing good form
Cumberland has been Castagna'd imo. All focus has been on him being defensive and that's all he's trying to do, lost his natural offensive instinct. I wish the coaches would just **** off the idea of a defensive forward. The best defense forward of centre is kicking ****ing goals.
Agree Dow needs a shot. What he does at VFL level would be a huge bonus to our midfield mix. We lack serious polish in getting the ball to an outside player and that's what he does.

Don’t think that quite adds up either because if he was being purely defensive the blokes he is manned up on wouldn’t be able to do what they want

Cumbo regularly gives his man far to much space in order to create separation for himself if the hall comes his way but more often than not his man uses that lack of attention to become an out number at the actual contest and they wrack up the ball

When he was on Hibbard in the Melbourne game Hibbard had like 12 intercepts and all uncontested
It shows that he isn’t accountable for his man at all

I have no idea what his role is or what he’s supposed to do. He’s a caddy 2017 for me. But FMD if I even know what type of game we’re even trying to play at the moment

He is a strong 1 on 1 player and a natural goal kicking forward.
The more we try to improve his defensive game, the more ineffective he is becoming.
If there is no spot for him in the team where we can utilise his strengths, then maybe no point playing him.

I think his focus has been shifted to being defensive, he's just not very good at it. Or more so it just doesn't come naturally to him.
He's stuck in a position where his instincts are to get the ball and kick goals but his mind is on trying to guard space and chase and tackle. He was better defensively when he was kicking goals than he is now, ironically.
Our previous defensive forwards haven't really stood a man either it's all about that space guarding and shutting down outlets.
And to be fair to Cumbo how many of the kicks were directed straight to Hibberd in a way that our forwards would dream of.

This kid really has alot going for him both on & off the ground

Extremely talents and freakish ability to do whats required when required and do something the elevates his team mates to extreme highs when required
Off the field he has the best defense attorneys with elite legal minds defending him at every opportunity unconditionally
Also the best fan club of any single individual thats ever graced an AFL field

Kid cant go wrong

No one doubts his ability - it's his application.
There hasn't been much of it in recent times.
He just needs to find th footy and the VFL is the best place for him to do that.

PS I agree with D. Rioli. Should have been dropped long before he was. Ditto for Castagna, Aarts and Edwards in his final two years.
I am a big believer in standrads applying across the group.

When you put in 100% effort, unless something extraordinary happens Dimma selects you. That’s the difference… even when D Rioli was struggling up forward he always led our pressure stats and ran his ar*e off. Same as Castagna. Those players get extra opportunities, as they should as it sets standards and shows the likes of Cumberland that talent alone is not enough to become a quality AFL player.

I’m a big fan of Cumberland and want the club to continue developing him and building his confidence when things don’t go his way. But I also don’t mind making him earn a game on the back of hard work.

There is a difference between playing poorly and not playing up to expectations.

Think the senior players that some have highlighted should be dropped are playing well below expectations; not necessarily poorly.

Cumberland has been playing poorly.

There are also some that would benefit from a stint in the two’s. I think Cumberland is one of them. Being dropped isn’t as dirty a word as some make it out to be.

At the start of the year I couldn't work out way he wasn't in the team after the year he had last season but now looking at his previous few games at AFL level it's clear he didn't have a great pre-season.
I know in fact I think our whole club had a poor pre-season that's why your only just starting to see us play a little better now. we are behind the 8 ball a bit.

The biggest concern is with Cumberland is if he isn’t impacting through scoring he’s pretty much irrelevant.

These type of players typically don’t have long careers.
That is why he should be going through the midfield. Not because he is going to be a midfielder at AFL level, but because the more 'football' he plays the better he will be. In other words, get him in the game for 120 minutes, not drifting in and out of play and doing his fancy stuff. Not drifting off when the ball is down the other end.

Every young kid with his skill set should be wanting to play midfield at times, in the game as much as possible. Let him enjoy his footy without the pressure of having to kick goals, do the defensive running etc that he has to do as a forward.

What have we got to lose, the VFL is where we should be developing players. Clarke should also be going through there for the same reason.

Kicked three goals yesterday and apart from that you wouldn’t have thought he’d played. Really bizarre that he can just disappear for long periods in games. As Grrr mentioned I think midfield time in the VFL could be his saving grace to keep him mentally occupied and game focused. He really did work well with Lynch last year and I think that’s killed his game a lot as Jack doesn’t provide him with the opportunities of bringing the ball to ground into his zone. Still no excuses for the rubbish he dished up after QT of the Demons game. Still need to be a team man and do the team things by adhering to the game plan if you aren’t getting the ball.

Noah needs to take a look at Mansell, while he may not be the most talented player on the list, it's how he gives everything he has any time he takes the field. If Noah had the same sort of effort and intensity in his game, he'd be one of the first picked every week, but he drifts in and out of games too often.

As I've said previously the ball is in Noahs court in regards to how his career pans out. He can either knuckle down and learn to stay engaged in the game even if things aren't going his way, or he gets spat out the other side and becomes yet another highly talented kid who blew their chance because they thought the little things that make a big difference weren't worth working on and their natural talent would be enough to get them through.

Bang on. Clearly what the match committee see as well

You’re likely right however I do think the structure that he needs to live by has impacted his innate skill , I dare say that dimma declares he needs to fit into the side not vice versa ,,, he has commented they’ve tried diff things to better expose him, he’s played both deep and up the ground and then dropped right off , hope he can get his chance and grab it by the horns as he’s got plenty to offer

Yep good summary

A bit of insight into the coaches thinking about Cumberland

What are some of the areas of Cumbo's game that we really want to see develop at this level so we can see him again at AFL level?

It's our system. He's very very good unstructured... if I could play him out of the goal square he'd probably kick 5, 6, 7 each week and he'd be a very very good player at VFL level... but that's not what we want for him. We want bigger things for him. We definitely think as a footy club, he's got more in store for himself and he really approached it in the right manner today.

I spoke to him in the first quarter about a really great defensive effort and I think that's what we see from him when he's playing well and funnily enough gets rewarded on the score board at the end ofthe day.

So that's what we want to see from him.

His investment in his teammates was really good today and it's not always a highlight of his... so I'm really pleased to see that version of Noah Cumberland... and I don't want to see him here too much because I think he should be out on the big stage... but he's putting in the work and I'm sure he'll get the reward at some stage.

Just reinforces what was being said a few pages back in regards to what Noah needed to work on and I wouldn't be the least bit shocked to find that Hardwick played him in the seniors to really ram home the message about how he needs to buy in to the systems and structures that we play with to truly become the player they believe he can become.

The positive was that he went back to the VFL and didn't sulk or throw a tantrum, but actually buckled down and did the things they want to see from him.

Now for him to back it up a couple more weeks so that the habits embed themselves and become something he doesn't need to worry about as it actually just happens.

The sky is the limit for the kid if that happens.
