Re: Alwyn Davey

Do you think that with the different structured forward line that he won't be caught out playing in such a role? He is obviously unable to play it successfully, but with more time playing together I don't think Davey will be forced into playing as CHF at all.

Davey was never instructed to play CHF last year, he got lost trying to chase kicks in that region (against coaches directives to stay in the F50 IIRC)

Fair enough. I don't ever think that anyone [including Davey] wanted him to be playing that type of role, but at times there was nobody else to kick to, and so he ended up being the only target. But I agree that at times [not only Davey] our forward line was caught out of formation/position and so players were forced to cover for each other, which is impossible for a player of Davey's stature.

Re: Alwyn Davey

He wasn't bad in 2009, just wasn't as good as he knows he can be. 2007 he was great and he showed some great form in 2008 in the early games. He is working hard this pre season and he needs to be more selfish in 2010. Go for a run, take on the other team and shoot for goal. He did it so well in 2007, would love to see him do it again!

Re: Alwyn Davey

Just re-watched the round thirteen Carlton game. Davey was magnificent. Back to his absolute best. So he definitely still has it in him.

Re: Alwyn Davey

Alwyn broke his arm in the same game just before Jimmy was injured. He ran down the race screaming in pain. Then the following year he did his knee. Those are two dreadful injuries that kept him out of footy and seriously limited any training. This year, he seemed to lose some pace, maybe because he gained some weight. I can watch that first half of 2007 you-tube over and over, never get tired of it.

I want the old Alwyn back - he was the most exciting player on the field, and I just loved those games.

That's how I saw it as well.
We need a lot more structure and discipline to our forward line. It occured at times that there were one or two blokes who were determined to lead into any- and every-one's space.
I wouldn't even mind seeing guys like Welsh or Hocking at half forward, if they're prepared to do the team thing and run all day. It's not all X-factor.

Re: Alwyn Davey

Oh god - don't, don't, don't watch that "Alwyn Davey Highlights First Half 2007" youtube video. Just don't. Unless you want to torture yourself. Don't watch it and start thinking of all the games he has missed through injury. Don't watch it and think about what we've all missed 'cause of those injuries. Don't watch it and wonder where he'd be as an AFL footballer going into the 2010 season if he'd had a full 2007/2008. Don't watch it. Don't.

(And I feel like that as a supporter - imagine what the poor bastard feels like....hopefully he's chomping at the bit like a madman.)

Re: 29. Alwyn Davey

Really think they should send him to Bendigo regardless of whether there is no Jetta. He has been very shite since his return from serious injury, and even his defensive pressure seems to have dropped off. At his best, you'd see him run down 3-4 people a game, that's just not happening anymore. At his best he would run around people and kick nice goals, now he hardly gets it, and uses it poorly when he does. I miss the Alwyn of old and fear he may never get back there. Stop giving hima free ride, send him to Bendigo to find form. Zaharakis and Monfries are playing beautifully well and Lonergan would give us far more than Davey around goals and can be an extra man who can run through the midfield and get clearances.

Re: 29. Alwyn Davey

We are doing Alwyn no favours keeping him in the senior team. He needs to play on ball in the VFL and get his hands on the pill a few times. A very important player to us when he is playing well, but at the moment we are playing a man short with him in the team.

Re: 29. Alwyn Davey

I think all of this recent calling for his head is BS to be honest.

He played really well last week against Geelong, (before the whole team started to tire), was looking his old self and caused headaches. To forget this effort because of 'one of those games' is a little harsh IMO.

Watching him yesterday, I could tell he really was trying despite our poor decisions as a whole... in fact, he took head on collisions with Sandi, tackled for the ball and at one point did well to break away from a pack going inside 50 only to be chicken legged and not paid a free.

The whole team, apart from a few stand outs weren't gelling well, so do we send them to Bendigo too? This 'gelling' problem will come when you've got hardly any injuries and technically a full list to choose from. Knowing what works week in and week out with a full list will be something we need to work out before we can really take off IMO, teething problems in the forward line more-so.

But that's just my two cents.

Re: 29. Alwyn Davey

A confused footballer who as a crumbing forward, doesn't present anywhere near enough for crumbs. Looks scaired out of his brain of any physical contact and still doesn't look like he's got any confidence in his knee.

Had a brief period against Geelong in the second quarter where he got his hands onto it a couple of times and other than that was unsighted. He was completely useless against Freo, he played the same rubbish game against Richmond in Morwell and has to go back to the two's until he can remember how to play.

Re: 29. Alwyn Davey

Welcome back froggy.
Great game :thumbsu: Havnt seen him play like that in a long time and was starting to lose faith. Massive difference to our side when he is firing.

Is he at the crossroads?

We have no crumbing forwards, he still can't get a game. Our forward pressure is pretty average, yet even that can't get him in, and when he has played, was used as a sub, and got limited opportunities. Seems to have been "tarred with the same brush" as Reimers, where he will only get opportunities if absolutely necessary.

I thought he was a real bright spot in the pre season comp, broke his arm and has hardly been sighted since. If he can't get a game now, will he get a game under Hird's leadership?

Where is he at?
