I dislike cutting people down in their time of glory and don't mean to have this come across this way... my partner asked what made him stand out from others and from a purely numbers analysis, was there one statistic that nobody else achieved? My guess might be most goals from 60 metres but that isn't a traditional stat... he has been described as a flanker and i think that is an insult if intended that way. He is such a unique player across so many athletic traits and IQ brilliance, it is spread across many ways.

Nobody in the last 20 years has come close to kicking 1000 goals.

He'll be the last person, certainly in my lifetime, to kick 100 goals in a season.

But others have and kicked more in fewer games... Lloyd was in the 900s? Not trying to nit pick! Was Bud the best ever at one stat! Maybe my partner's question had a quantitative aspect that misses what he brought, edge of the seat brilliance is how he made you feel and that was incredible. Who do we know who did the same... maybe Ablett?

Seems that way but others have kicked 100 before! Maybe I need the twitter stat person to run it through the spreadsheet! Can't recall the account name!
Before is the operative word.

It's incredibly doubtful whether you'll see someone AFTER.

All the best Bud. One of the all time greats, and a privilege to watch him in the brown and gold.

His elimination final in 07, all of his 08, especially the final against Lake and the dogs. Absolutely brilliant.

Is still one of my all time favourite players, and was gutted when we went to the Swann's. But never stopped loving watching him play.

Just quietly, looking back at our 2013 forward line would have to be one of the very best ever.

Gunston - Franklin - Bruest
Rioli - Roughead - Puopulo

Over 3,000 goals between them, 5 All Australians, 2 x Coleman medalists, 4 x Hawthorn leading goal kickers, 3 x PCM, 1 x Norm smith. Unbelievable.
Haha. That forward line!! That is insane. How lucky we were, as supporters, to witness that.

Found this in a clean up. I swear Buddy signed it for me in early 2008. But maybe not - were they mass produced with signatures (and the cheeky ‘23’)? Does anyone know?

Frame that shit. Special. And what a season.

WTF Cooney won that Brownlow. I cannot remember a season like it since from any player

I don't believe they were mass produced like that - you must have gotten him to sign it.

That was the year I realised a key forward would never win the Brownlow ever again.. what more could you actually have done
Well..... not get suspended for a start.

74 frees against didn't do him any favours either.

That game the other year against the Swans at the G soon after retiring …… absolutely admire and respect buddy how he gave the Hawks faithful so much time and recognition walking slowly along the wing. The love is mutual buddy.

At the time it bloody hurt him leaving but you are always a Hawks legend Lance Buddy Franklin!
