That's absolutely ridiculous.
Yeah probably. But Carr coming in this year rather than when he had just touched draft age is a much better option. He could have easily been cast aside by now if we had drafted him too soon.

Players like Western, Benning and Carter could perhaps have fared better if held back and not under pressure to be worthy of a list spot.

This year for example we have Joshua Nomlatyu coming through, and from what I have read he is a speculative long term prospect. Very unlikely to get games for several seasons. If he's going to drift to the Rookie list, no drama. But likely he'll take the same kind of time it will take for Murphy, Davies and other talls to develop.

If there's an off list pathway to develop players tied to the club, all good.

So Jackson out with a hammy.
That tall depth is always going to get tested.
Didn’t bode well at the end of 2024😜
So what happens when the small depth gets tested, juat assume they'll be fine? We have more talls than anyone, I really disagree with needing more

I think people need to cool their jets in Cody curtin
He’s playing against kids
See how he goes against men.
He’s a big boy and very good at protecting the ball drop

But colts is 3 years behind playing afl.
Wait until he plays league

Question marks for me on C.Curtin are:
(1) As you say, he is bullying players that are a lot smaller than himself atm - can he do that against seasoned AFL veterans?
(2) Because he has easy ways to get the ball at the moment with his strength, I am not sure what his speed is off the mark - will he be fast enough at AFL level or will he continually get cut across / outrun?

He played as an under-ager in the under18 championships as a defender and was very good. He is most likely going to be a very good player.

Here’s one for all the “Draft WA talent” enthusiasts.

Xavier Ellis on HBG podcast today did a segment on the eagles. He’s got a broader theory that the players taken out of WA in the draft over the last 6 years are, mostly shit (paraphrasing but that’s what he really meant).

There is only one A grader and that’s Warner. There is a few potential A graders like Darcy Jones, Luke Jackson, Jordan Clark.
There is a few solid citizen 150 game types and some role players.

Then there is a big pile of busts.

Listed 24 players the eagles have drafted from WA since 2018. The best of them was Brady Hough. Hardly a superstar.

Thankfully Wallsy doesn’t listen to the freo fan nuffies that would have had us drafting Dev Robertson over Serong and other such silly ideas.

On a broader point - is WA talent falling behind Victorian counterparts?

People won’t like this but we have been
ordinary since Sumich was told the job was full time.
Then they didn’t commit to this, and the number of kids drafted has declined.
Vic system is superior and unless WA footy put some coin into the system its only getting worse.
Eastern states kids are more prepared to be plug and play.

Less emphasis on footy at the private schools? I imagine the programs in Victoria would be elite, run by elite ex-afl stars vs our washed up media Perthonalities.

He doesn’t rate Amiss?

Does he mention where he rates himself on the star spectrum?

Ellis was a pick 3 in the draft for Hawthorn taken as a priority pick in front Josh Kennedy at 4 (the one from E. Frem) and Scott Pendelbury at 5.

He played in a premiership in his 36th AFL game but only played 120 overall - 34 of those at West Coast.

To be fair to Ellis he’s been harsh on freo the last 3 or 4 years but has ultimately been proven right. We haven’t made any impact on the business end of the comp.
He did tip us for top 4 this year in preseason though.

On amiss, I guess it depends on how you define a star. He’s still young but if your are going to define Jye as a “star” then there’s 200 odd stars in the comp.

The Victorian system is strong at underage level and appears to be getting stronger. Bo Allan was the best in WA last year and he’s well behind others from Vic in his development at this early stage it appears.

Going to be an interesting watch.

After lagging behind our NGA for most of the formative years WC is actually starting to look stronger overall in the coming years.

Frustratingly they seem to have an endless supply of small fwds coming through - dewar and champion already , Wes walley, tylah Williams and very promising prospect in Lachlan mcglade

Koby Evan’s looks a real prospect too and I think jadd hill is also WC NGA

None as promising as Lucas Robinson tho - to think those grubs had him listed originally under their academy

#5 Toby Whan
Midfielder | 184cm | 09/05/2007

Stats:
22 disposals, 5 tackles, 2 inside 50s

Playing predominantly inside the stoppages, Whan displayed great promise as a contested bull in the midfield. Rarely allowed the time to break away or dangerously dispose of the footy, Whan was forced to move the ball by hand often, having 14 of his 22 disposals come by hand. His fitness stood up as the game went on, able to find more space in the midfield in the latter stages, showing glimpses of evasive ability, lethal kicking and dangerous run and carry. Whan never looked too flustered when in possession, always choosing the right option when disposing of the ball.

When is Robertson eligible to be drafted?

I wonder with Hart whether it's a net benefit or net harm that he's in such a rubbish Colts team. On one hand, it's a good experience. Plus anything half decent often has his fingerprints on it. And he's tall enough that he might get the "too good to be stuck in the fwd line" midfield minutes (might have a questionable tank though). On the other, less chances to impress.

Still, decent sign to kick those 3 and show off his trademark agility on a few occasions (with a bit of luck). His behind might have been most notable though. Set shot 50 out from a holding the ball, breeze blowing towards him, and he smacks the top of the goalpost. Massive roost.

You'll take any freebie you can get in a comp where others are getting a better rub of the green. But looking at the top 3 of this year, if they make it they seem to be good profiles of players to have. You'd assume Whan's an outside player at the next level, but always good to develop the contested side. Hart's pre-season agility test numbers are great and you can never have too much of that type. And Nomlatyu is now playing KPD - can be that big athletic type that people are crying out for. Think he's played every position in the spine now.

It’s funny it has lined up with WC’s player development taking a huge dive. They would have as many busts with interstate recruits as well so I hardly think the talent has collapsed by using them as a measuring stick.
