Does anybody know the circumstances of the mass departure of players from Sandy last year? We’re they sacked or did they walk? It appears that the quality of the 2025 Sandy list is no better than 2024 list.

arnt all vfl players on 1 year agreements? it always seemed so

You just have to look at the GWS reserves side from last week to see how off the mark we are. They were fitter, skilled and played to a plan.

Probably not super surprising because they had way more AFL players.

Sandy had 6 AFL players:

Butler (145 AFL games), Henry (55), Schoenmaker (4), McLennan (2), Said (0), Tauru (0)

GWS had 15:

Keeffe (116), Thomas (22), McMullin (17), Aleer (12), Rowston (7), Fonti (5), Gruzewski (4), Angove (0), Delana (0), Derksen (0), Leake (0), Madden (0), Oliver (0), Ough (0), Wardius (0)

Like it's cool if you want a change but I don't think that game is an example of anything at all except that Sandy will always get thumped if there are 12 injured players missing and 2 AFL emergencies they also can't select.

The above just goes to show how bad our injury management remains and the flow on effect throughout the club. We do have some consistently injured players eg King, Clark, Dow etc but our constant large injury list are a major concern. You have to wonder how GWS have 9 more AFL listed players available than us, what are they doing different to us?

Apart from Cordy, Heath etc due to our on the run list rebuild we have a very inexperienced bottom end of the list. But thats where VFL programs with totally autonomy can recruit to fill the gaps. The players are out there look who played off in last years Grand Final Werribee and South Port. Its the mature quality footballers that make the difference.

Sandy also had nine changes to the previous week’s team. Not great for developing team work.
