In an unusual quirk in this year’s fixture, the Giants will play their second match in a row in Adelaide when they take on the Crows next Saturday at 4.15pm AEST.

GWS will enter this match in solid form on the back of a 4-1 start to season 2025. After a sluggish start against the Saints in Gather Round, the Giants eventually found their mojo and ran out 28-point winners. However, an all-too-familiar fourth quarter fade-out meant the winning margin was much less than it should have been. That said, we sit comfortably in the top 4 with a percentage of 145.4 at the end of Round 5.

In the corresponding match against Adelaide last season, the Giants went in as favourites but lost 94-78, so the players shouldn’t be underestimating the challenge this week. The Crows also benefit from a nine-day turnaround and will come out feeling fresh.

Opposition watch

After a hot start to the year, the Crows will be smarting after consecutive losses to the Gold Coast and Geelong which sees them sitting in 7th spot heading into Round 6. Despite their recent slump, the Crows' potency in attack cannot be underestimated. So far in 2025, they have kicked scores of 135, 161, 114, 90 and 100, thanks in large to their key forward threats of Fogarty, Thilthorpe and Walker who have kicked 43 goals between them. It will be fascinating to see this much-lauded trio duke it out against the Giants’ star-studded backline. Adelaide also have an electric midfield mix with stars like Dawson, Rankine and Soligo who are fast and damaging with ball in hand, so expect Bedford to tag one of those players.

Where the Crows struggle however is in their defensive profile, with a relatively young and inexperienced back six. Despite their 3-2 record, the Crows have the worst defensive record of the current top 8, conceding a whopping 460 points in just five games. There’s a real opportunity for the Giants potent forward line to put on a big score this week if the midfield can provide enough quality forward 50 entries.

Potential team changes

It’s unlikely the coaching staff will make too many changes to a winning team. Brent Daniels will return (pending fitness) and Stephen Coniglio is likely to be recalled if he has recovered from his pain in the butt (glute injury). The question is, who would make way for these returning players? Callum Brown could be the unlucky one to miss, after he was solid but not spectacular today. Callan Ward might also be due for a rest, especially after a knock to the ribs early today. Jacob Wehr might also be in danger of a suspension after a ‘sling’ tackle in the third quarter that could be cited. Did Jake Riccardi do enough to keep his spot ahead of Max Gruzewski?

Adam Giant’s prediction: GWS by 19 points.

So, fellow Giants fans, what are you expecting for this week’s match against Adelaide?

I went over for this game last year, and watched in horror as we conceded seven goals in the second quarter for the second week in a row, which was effectively the end of the game.

To win this, we have to at least break-even in the midfield. We have the forwards to kick a winning score, and the backs to deal with theirs.

And we can't let the Crows get any sort of run-on.

I think Peatling picked up a 1-game suspension didn't he? So unless Adelaide challenge, they'll likely lose him. However, their mids and forwards have been impressive to date, and they'll look to turn around those losses.

Really, we just have to keep playing our system, and not have fade-outs. Overall, we were very slick when it was clicking for us today; of course you can't get 100% right, so it did break down some times. Overall, though, we stopped Saints more than they could stop us (except for the first half of the first quarter ... and maybe the last quarter, or was that just us running out of puff?).

I thought Briggs really imposed himself on today's game, and took Rowan Marshall - who's normally an excellent ruckman - right out of the game. I know that Crows fans scream about O'Brien, so we really want Briggs to do the same again next week, and help us win the midfield and clearance battles. Otherwise, Green, Callaghan, Kelly and the occasional roll-through from the likes of Stringer, Binga, Greene and Jones worked well for us against Saints.

I am not convinced that Riccardi really makes us better ... but Kingers seems to want him in there for the relief ruck roll. To be honest, now that Stringer seems to be up and running, I'd prefer us to go with Hogan-Cadman (relief ruck A) - Stringer - Brown (relief ruck B) - Greene - Binga - Jones ... and I'd probably play Harvey Thomas as well. With having 8 instead of 7 up front, one is rolling through the extra midfield role regularly. I think we can make that work as it helps our speed. Otherwise, we just look a touch tall.

The backline will earn their pay against the 3 KPP Crows forward line. HH has the potential to be exposed, because he's not that great in the 1-on-1 role. I think Idun will pick up some 1-on-1 defending against talls at times next week.

It will be interesting to see who does come in ... or not. Hard to fiddle with a winning team. Binga will be sure to come in if fit. I guess the question is whether Cogs deserves to push someone out, and if so, who? Probably Wehr, who would be unlucky, as he's been playing well in that wing role.

I'd prefer Aleer to Himmelberg in a defensive one-on-one match up with someone like Thilthorpe. But I think Kingsley is more inclined to stick with the structure he likes than go horses for courses.

I’d prefer any other player on our list distributing the ball by foot than Aleer.

Bucks, Taylor, HH & Idun is bough height to bring the ball to ground and then burn them the other way like every other team this year.

We have the best defence in the comp so far this year. No need to make any changes

I watch Adelaide a lot as Matty Nicks was my favourite player. The Crows are similar to our structure and style although I think we are a bit faster.

Genuinely can't separate the two. It will be a close one but they will be more refreshed.

Harry H was poor yesterday which isn't surprising given his form this season. However he plays on a tall, probably Tex. I think Idun gets Keays and the interceptor role.

Bedford on Soligo. Green on Dawson. Kelly on Rankine.

Edit. Riccardi is better option as a relief ruck than the package because he can kick straight! 😊

They will be annoyed after 2 losses, plus the extra days off and home crowd.
Tactics will be interesting. Our defence is elite and our forwards should be a handful for their backs.
Their tall defence is their weakness at the moment. Provided we can break even in the midfield, if our talls can play to their potential, it should end up in our favour. I am worried about the heat factor though, and the difference in recovery time. Nothing we can really do about that, now though.

Thankfully Saturday is a mild top of 21 degrees, so that’s good. Hopefully a light week on the track this week. It really was extremely hot Sunday, first half especially.

Kingsley consistently rewards good performance with selection even when tactically not sound eg. Keefe against the Hawks.

Weir keeps his spot.

I wonder if Ward gets a break even though he played well. He gets to spend time with his family during Easter.

Wehr definitely keeps his spot. I'd say Ward does too, can't see us dropping him after such a good performance.

If there's a time to give him a rest it'd be next week after Cogs and Daniels come back.

Found this lying around in the change sheds ...

It shows our guys playing pretty clearly defined roles:
  • Tom Green is the contested player and hitout gatherer
  • Bedford is the defensive midfielder and ground ball player, who doesn't attempt to gather the hitout
  • Callaghan is the handball receiver who does little contested work - Green tries to feed him
  • Kelly plays a hybrid role.
The Crows midfield is a little more chaotic in structure ... although it's worked for them in 3 out of 5 games to date.

Yeah saw the analysis on the crows preview thread … it might mean we are easier to disrupt

A game that will be tough. I think we need to play better than last week. I think crows will play a bit better, perhaps switch Curtin to defence to improve it.
