Just got back from the game. A decent crowd to my surprise.

Don't want to come across negative after a thumping win but I agree with Giant Strides. We weren't that ruthless. The lapses and flatness in Q2&3 were not punished by the Eagles. Can't afford to do that against Top 6 sides. Midfielders were isolated with no support nearby which resulted in inevitable turnovers. I might elaborate later.

My man Cadman had a forgettable game, tried hard, dropped marks and a miss that he should have slotted.

Jake Stringer... Two shots that were regulation goals at the AFL level. 🤦 Watched enough Essendon games to know that the Package was notoriously inconsistent. I also agree with another poster who questioned the point of his recruitment. I felt the same but embraced the decision nevertheless. From my vantage point I thought that he was dropping the ball slightly outside of his foot then kicking through hard as if to compensate. Callum Brown was more effective around the ground.

I didn't see Ward after the first quarter on my side and thought he must have been subbed out. Was surprised to see him in the 4th quarter.

On a lighter note, the debutant, Tommy Gross's family was in my section. It was great to see the sheer joy when the young man kicked his goal!

Definitely agree, but in our defence it was clear early that we had their measure and it’s mentally hard to maitain that intensity when you’re cruising. In the end we still crushed them and got a strong percentage boost. Job done but will need to play much better against stronger teams.

We dominated virtually the whole game and it took a mix of umpire interference and quality play from the better weagles to create their scoring opportunities. If we were a fraction sharper and nailed the 4-5 gettable chances we would have beaten them by over 100. But it was still a reflection that we are an imperfect but formidable team. I agree with the "job done" assessment. We are in a great position to tinker with with selection and roles within the current game style.

It's so nice that that members turnout is improving for low-drawing teams. The nufties and naysayers never get to see the sea of orange on the non TV side. It was solid from the cheer squad through sections 222/221 and onwards.

I feel the exact same, member stands are filling in quite nicely.

I sit in the upper stands and the upper stands right along are filling in quite nicely from my view. I went for a walk during a break to have a look what the stadium view was like from the scoreboard and definitely confirms.

The trains to and from the stadium, coming from the west are looking more orange, too. Seeing Giants fans get on and off at stations I haven't seen before is incredibly pleasing. We went to the supermarket in my area after the game and there were Giants fans donning Giants gear, great to see.

I know some people will take this and say why aren't our numbers X, but when we're coming from a low base, the changes/telltale signs are definitely much more noticeable for those of us that attend our games. In fact, I'm more concerned with the Giants attendance rather than the overall attendance, as long the Giants fanbase is on the up, I think things are looking good for us.

Hopefully it continues and compounding takes care of the rest.

What I also find encouraging is our fan base is growing more culturally diverse which is representative of Western Sydney. I see young families from East and South Asian backgrounds and can't help feeling happy for the club's future.

Go Giants!
Yes. I've thought about this and through observation and general conversation have these points to support this growth.
  • Less generational bias
  • A desire to "fit in" and identify with the Western Sydney population (hello Colonial )
  • Focus on family friendly entertainment (less male-driven crowd aggression than other codes)
  • The athletic dynamism is unique and a point of difference to various rectangle field, ball sports
  • An understanding that AFL is a truly national game
  • AFL seen as more of a "day out"
  • A sense of joy singing the Giants Team song - really, it's a thing!
  • General acceptance and friendliness from the "Aussies" to include them in the game.

We need to be a Western Sydney club, not a club based in Western Sydney.

I think gws should get some of the inner west, but it won't happen. Blacktown has a huge number of junior cricket teams, many kids have it as the sport they play, not a football code. I think burwood, strathfield, canterbury/ bankstown council areas could be potentially switched to GWS. Probably won't happen unless a Canberra team enters is my prediction of what will happen.

Attendance of 9,232 being reported for today.

Not sure how accurate as it's not from the AFL website though I find Austadiums close to the mark.

Yes, nothing yet from the AFL website so far about the crowd.

A crowd of 9,231 is the 5th biggest home crowd against West Coast (of the 9 times we have ever hosted them). Thought we would crack 10k given the weather and promotional offers, but still significantly better than the crowd of 5057 we got the last time we played West Coast at home in 2022.

For context, 4x reigning premiers Penrith Panthers got 10,000 to their NRL game on Friday night.

I’d love it if we could start getting 12,000 to a game like this, but the criticism of our crowds needs to be looked at in the broader Sydney sporting attendance landscape.

For broader context Penrith was playing 45-60 minutes away from their base in Parramatta and they usually sell out their Penrith stadium, but in broader broader context (heh) yeah there'd be plenty of other small (10k or less) NRL crowds to pick up on over the last few years.

I was hoping we'd crack the 10k mark also.

All the remaining games of the season at Giants stadium, bar the Geelong Cats game, we'll be able to do better comparisons on as we've played all these teams at Giants stadium in the post covid era.

If yesterday's crowd for the season was close to our floor at Giants stadium, it wouldn't be too bad but I think the Suns game will dip. If of the remaining games the lowest is shy of 9k it will definitely show improvement. Remains to be seen.

Around Sydney there was probably at least 1000 people who would be keen to go but were out at Penrith, Kellyville, Castle Hill, Pennant Hills or Warwick Farm with their kids at their junior Aussie Rules fixture on Sunday afternoon. It's a stupid timeslot to conflict with a standing attendance expectation of the club's base outside of school holidays.

If I recall correctly this was the group of people that turned out for the Fremantle game last season. Numbers for that game pleasantly surprised the club, as I recall Kingsley mentioning the pleasing numbers during the presser.

We had a crowd of 10,801 at Engie Stadium for that game.

No doubt, but they’d probably get more like 15K against Nth Queensland in Penrith. Compare that to Collingwood v Carlton which got 82,000 on a Thursday night in Melbourne.

That explains the tiny number of Auskick kids at half-time.
