Preview 2025 Round 3 - Hawthorn vs GWS Giants, Saturday 29 March, 7.35 pm UTAS Stadium, Launceston

I hope we end up with the Stringer v Weddle match up.

This could be the one that gets him off to a good start. Weddle is a good player don't get me wrong but and indecision will get him killed against Stringer.
Stringer matched up with Idun in most of pre-season and anyone who pays less attention to him will feel it.

Battle v Hogan I think also is a favourable match up. Hogan's first game back so I'm not expecting a lot but would be great to see him start strong.

Barrass likely gets Cadman....and is probably looking to help with Hogan a fair amount. Look for Cadman and Hogan trying to get early switches with these two to mess with the Hawks defensive set up.

Fox Footy's view of the potential team changes:

Team Tips: Coming off their bye, the Giants could be set to welcome back several stars, with Kieren Briggs, Jesse Hogan and Jake Stringer all in the frame to return from injury in a potential huge triple boost for Adam Kingsley’s side. So who comes out? There’s uncertainty around Brent Daniels’ hip injury from Round 1 as one potential forced out. Meanwhile James Leake, Conor Stone and Max Gruzewski, who was the sub against Melbourne, are the others on the fringe, while they surely couldn’t drop Lachie Keeffe after that goal against Melbourne. Elsewhere, Jake Riccardi, Toby McMullin, Harvey Thomas and Joe Fonti are all available after suspension, but you sense they’d need to prove themselves in the VFL first.

I think you'll end up seeing Barrass to Hogan, Weddle to Cadman, and Battle to Stringer.

Hardwick will probably have a job on Greene, but we could see any or all of Weddle, Sicily, and Hardwick spend time forward in patches.

Idun Taylor Whitfield
Ash Buckley Stone
Ward Cogs Kelly
Greene Cadman Stringer
Daniels Hogan Jones

Briggs Green Snooze

HH XOH Wehr Keeffe Leake

Confident with starting 18… not sure about bench.

Hahaha yeah I I'm really not seeing why Keeffe is keeping his spot with Briggs back in and a better forward who can ruck available. Makes no sense to me.

Leake I reckon has to go for the burst and pace of McMullin or Thomas.

I'm fine with keeping Ward and Wehr there tho.

Yeah those match ups feel pretty legit.
Weddle/Cadman I like.
This is why I think we should play Riccardi too. Battle is forced to play on a guy 198cms.
Hardwick gets forced to Stringer as he plays the Toby role while Toby goes for mid minutes.
I think it'll create more mismatches up forward.

Should be an amazing watch at the ground.

Our odds have lengthened a bit, they're now paying $1.47 as opposed to $2.68 for us.

It's a bit strange, really, as we'll get Briggs back and probably Hogan and/or Stringer, while they'll be missing the likes of players such as MacDonald, Worpel, and Dear.

Are the punters seeing something we're missing?

Easy money is what that is.

This is the first gws game not live on free to air TV.
Perhaps punters think we will pick to many players who haven't played last 2 matches.
I hope Hogan is 90% or more fit.

We barely beat a team that got flogged by NM.

We didn't play last week whereas Hawthorn had a decent win.

We're playing away down in Tassie which is seen as a Hawks stronghold.

But everyone's ignoring the key stat - we've got a much better finals records there than Hawthorn, so we can clearly handle the pressure better!

NM were beaten by the dogs who lost to the pies who we absolutely flogged. Go figure

Here are some possible reasons they'd pick Keeffe:
  • He's executing his role well and is highly regarded and trusted by the coaching staff.
  • Briggs will likely play less game time than usual given his lack of match fitness. A better back-up ruck might be valuable this week.
  • They may not want to make too many changes to a winning team at the risk of disrupting cohesion. There's already likely to be three certain changes (Hogan, Briggs, Stringer all in).
  • Riccardi's scoring output (his only value) is more than matched by the inclusion of Stringer.
Riccardi might indeed get the nod but I don't think its laughable to suggest Keeffe keeps his spot.

Our game against Melbourne was a wet slog that suited their big inside mids and blunted our attack. We’d have flogged them if it was indoors at Marvel.
To be clear, I'm enumerating reasons that could be seen to justify the betting line.

Actual opinions may vary. ;)
