Really wish they'd stop sucking off our midfield and calling it star laiden. Most overrated in the comp. Tracs a star, Olivers had 2 shit years, Vineys cooked and then what? Bunch of question marks.

Even if Olivers back to being good 2 players ain't a star midfield and id rather Trac play forward, no ball users and no goal kickers in there.

I don't get the Petracca forward brigade that permeate this site. I couldn't disagree more.

If Melbourne are to seriously challenge this year Petracca needs to be back to his best in the midfield. He kicks goals from there anyway. He'll always rest forward but he's far more damaging playing predominantly midfield. He kicked 29 goals in 2021 being mainly a mid and should have had closer to 40 if not for his kicking.

I suppose we all see things differently.

Training report from Fox:

Appreciate the article. But the whole article is boloney. We didn't even play a match sim. There was no tackling, only about 13 players a side and the ground was reduced in size. There was also no kicking for goal. So no idea where they got match simulation from.

Oliver didn't do anything suggested in the article and if anything he looked sluggish around the ground. But he did have a couple of 1-2 handballs and he's lost weight so he's definitely put in some work.

Jed Adams did some good things though. I do agree with that.

I agree. He's a terrible set shot for goal so may as well use him as a pure mid where he kicks goals anyway.

Saints and Lions 2023, Baggers last year. Those games show why he is better as a 60%+ forward.

Better kicking in those games too, less fatigued with less midfield time?
Yeah, set up a few also. Hes way more damaging per possession inside 50. Trac getting 20 possessions (15 or more of them forward of centre) and 2.5 - 3 goals a game is better than Trac getting 30 and 1 imo.

But he'll never average 20 disposals and kick 55-70 goals per year. That's fanciful.

He's the best score involvement and goal assist midfielder in the game, which is lost when he's shunted down forward.

He could kick 50 goals in a season no problem. He's more dangerous than Fritsch inside F50 and he kicked 40 last year with ****ing awful supply.

I agree 20 possessions a game might be a bit ambitious if hes spending majority of the time forward, bit I was thinking he would still get some minutes on ball each quarter.

Petracca is of far more value in the midfield for mine.
We have no problem getting it inside 50, ****ing awful at converting inside 50s into goals for the most part. Something needs to change.

We did last year. We were 14th for i50s.

2021 we were second.
And we were 12th for I50s for the last 10 games of the season WITHOUT Trac, so we improved.

2021 isnt happening again with that game plan, sticking with that game plan the past 3 years is a good part of reason why we are were we are, the quicker we accept that the better.

The game-plan is a separate argument. It has nothing to do with where Petracca plays.

Unless the midfield becomes dominant again the club is going nowhere. It won't get better having one of your two best mids parked in the forward half.

As I said, we won't agree. Move on.

Problem is we are a team bereft of creativity in the forward half, and Trac is obviously a gun midfielder but as the game continues to evolve winning at clearance has become significantly less important (And our midfield has been pretty hit and miss in that department since 2021 against the good teams). If Oliver comes back to something even close to his best it only makes more sense to play Trac down there (And play Koz in the middle more).

Prefer him forward but I don't have a lot of trust on our midfield without him.
Thing is, we are paying rusty nuts 1.5 million a year to do nothing but be a midfielder so he's locked into that position and after campaignering the club around for 2 years it's on him to stand up. Combine that with keeping Viney who's another bloke who only plays inside mids and that's half your midfield locked in for 80% of the game. It's time we got different looks in there, if we go in with Oliver, Viney and Trac for 80% of the game again this year it'll just prove nothing's changed

Assuming Oliver can resemble a footballer again I'd be very keen for Viney to gtfo of the midfield.

Can't see it happening. VC isn't he? An re signed for 3 years or whatever. They'll run him out till he's dead
