Apparently Trac back in full training. Participated in match sim.
No. He was in rahab with Gawn, Woewodin, Lever and Fullarton.

Before the more willing simulations started, i.e. non contact, he competed in some drills. But once it was contact stuff, which it was for most of the session, he was on the sidelines running laps, or doing some short kicking drills.

Cheers. Info I was given was he was in the match sim. I assumed full contact.

Training report:
* I'll preface this by saying that seeing things at Casey are 10 times harder than at Gosch's. Anything that's not on the wing closest to you is very hard to see.

Positives:
  • Xavier Lindsay: Boy Gee, he looks amazing. Great user of the footy, has poise, and is very balanced.
  • As someone who has had some serious concerns of Langford, I thought he trained well. Found a bit of the ball. Could use it better but he was much better than pre-xmas training sessions.
  • Ricky Mentha: I honestly wasn't sure if he had the skills to make it in the afl but he does have a weird canny to find the footy.
  • Viney: by far the best trainer of the day.
  • Sestan was doing some nice things.
  • Oliver has lost weight. I didn't see any burst from him today but he showed it pre-xmas when he was heavier so I'm sure he'll be fine when the real stuff starts. Just good to see him working hard to get himself conditioned.

Negatives:
  • maybe a fair few not training fully: Mcvee, Chandler (arm in a sling), Fullerton, Jefferson, Kozzie (a no-show), Tholstrup, Spargo, Kentfield.
  • JVR pushing a guy square in the back before attempting a mark. It was paid in the back but you've gotta train how you play and that was a low IQ act. Needs to be smarter. Hell, his last brain fade (an elbow to the head of an opponent) arguably cost us a couple of finals wins.
  • I left training at about 11.50am. No set shot goal kicking practice for some unknown reason. After 6 training sessions, goal kicking practice has been pro-actively de-prioritised. It's been an after thought. So any post match press-conferences where he says 'we're working incredibly hard on our goal kicking' is a blatant lie.

Have you seen much of Riv and McVee this summer? If so, thoughts?

Who was training as small forwards with KB supposedly on the wing, Kozzie MIA and Chandler injured.

Do we actually have anyone looking to rove the ball off our tall forwards or apply pressure in the F50?

to be honest, there was no real match sim. 90% of the training session was defending the ball from a defensive 50m stoppage.

Nothing really telling.

I'd say without Pickett we're in a bit of trouble for small forwards/pressure. Sestan/Melksham don't really offer defensive pressure and Mentha isn't up to it atm despite training well.

Begs belief our list balance, time and time again it’s off and now we don’t even have any small forwards for the 1s, let alone for Casey when all other clubs have stockpiled them with the new high pressure way of playing.

Will hurt us severely in 2025.

Watch us end up with make shift small forwards in the 1s like Billings or Sparrow trying to play the role while opposition defenders run circles around them and stroll the ball out like a Sunday walk all game.

Yeah the small forward situation is our glaring weakness. Should have done much more to get one (or two) as a trade or in the draft.

I do agree with this. I think raiding GWS for one of their speedy smalls would be very wise.

Hoping it means significant change to the game style.
Windsor playing more from the back half is interesting. He and McVee's speed and ball use could mean a swing of attack from defence with quick ball movement. Not sure what that means for Salem. He's a neat kick but usually slow in delivering the ball. Hopefully a move for him to Casey. Sharp on the wing will add more pace. Still worried our immediate mids are slow. Clarry, Viney, Langford all not quick. Would like to see Koz, Riv and Windsor have more on ball time. I think we need Trac nearly perma forward as our F50 is still embarrassing. He, Koz and Fritta should always be on the move with Johnson and JVR as our leading targets. By all reports Johnson looks like he could be a Round 1 starter. Big body and tough. I don't mind the idea to see what he can bring early on.

I just hope that Goody stays strong in any changes. Lions had a poor start to 2024 and won the flag. Hawks were ordinary early as well. GWS the year before were poor early before gaining momentum. Changes will take time. I hope he stays the course. Enough of this dull defence gameplan.

Dunno if I'd call it strange, the club's obsessed with inside mids and there's no evidence at all to say they've changed that thinking

except for using early draft pics on non inside mids since 21 flag?

Now can the game plan catchup?

What role is Langford going to play year 1? It seems he should be in the 22

Hard for some of the big mids early in their career as they usually just inside mids but arent ready for that combative role early

Can we see him playing a fair bit of the opposite wing to Langdon with Windsor going back with small 20% CBAs?

The main 4 seem to be

Viney
Trac
Oliver
Rivers

And they love Kozzie having some CBA spurts

Doubt he'll line up on a wing. Expect he'll probably play forward for a good chunk with spurts through the middle. Most of us are also hoping that Trac spends a fair bit more time up forward, too.

If selection choices are rational rather than the coach's maaates then we should be looking good in the opening rounds.

Training:

  • windy day.
  • basically did keepings off handball drills which focussed on using the spare man.
  • Then did a similar drill with keepings off with only kicking. Windsor, Bowey, Howes etc. found a lot of the ball simply because it was all chip chip
  • Lindsay and and Langford only did half the training and then walked back to Aami Park. Disappointing that the club would choose not to showcase 2 guys that a lot of fans would've come strictly to see.
  • Chandler out of his shoulder brace and laps but doing so in a stiff manner
-Gawn, Trac did modified training. As did Woewodin, Daniel Turner (who took a hit during the session), Lever, Fullerton and Spargo just ran the odd lap
- Once again, no real goal kicking practice. 5-10 minutes of token practice with no-one on the mark. It's an afterthought which is really disappointing.
