If we had 4 injuries to medium size defenders, but I'd like to see him reach a better level of consistency at VFL level
I think you could make an argument that he would be a good stylistic replacement for Saad, if there was an injury.

So in the situation where we want that run, it might be worth giving Billy a crack.

Agree that you would want a good patch of VFL/training form as a basis

Come first hitout, you would expect that those who have put in during preseason would be choosen for the practice matches and then those who performed would be in the first game.

A good patch of VFL/training form for those who missed out on selection should be use to replace those who were average in the first's .
We should be ruthless in saying that if you are average in the firsts then you go straight back to the VFL regardless of name.
Time to put a premium on being in the firsts.

Obviously that would be hard if say Weiters fell in to that category, who replaces him from the VFL?

There is a sizable difference in the 2 levels.

If a player is slightly down on form at AFL level, he would still be a much better option than someone who has shown good signs but lacks consistency at VFL level.

Even the likes of Dow that did find a great level of consistency at the lower level, but struggled with aspects of his game when promoted

I doubt we will see considerable change early in the season, perhaps 2 or 3 changes with the departure of Owies and Kennedy

From that point, we will get to see the output of all players

Wilson is a very good prospect. I suspect, like me, you baulk at the level of “love” he has had in team projections and the like. We have a significant list of general defender candidates for the coming season and for mine, Billy has some work to do to jump those starting in front of him.

Newman, Saad, Cowan, Ollie H., Boyd, Cincotta are there for probably four best 22 spots. Then we have Smith and the Campos as possible candidates to kick off careers, and Charleson may surprise a few. Elijah has been spoken of as going back at times and for me a slim possibility Lord has a spot “created” to get him in after a stellar pre season.

I really like Billy, but will be surprised, even amazed if we see him early in the top team.

I wouldn't be writing off anyone. I expect changes to the usual structure this year.

Cincotta start is delayed and Saad is struggling with hamstring issues. Newman will be 32 but has just come off his best year.

Form and fitness will tell. Ollie, Wilson, Boyd and maybe L.Campo could well be fighting for the running defender roles. Cowan is a bit like Newman in that he can play a bit taller. Williams forward has created more options

Charleson looks a bit off it body wise but Carroll has looked good if given a spot. Has some class

I'm open to anything as pre season so far is showing a real change in how we do things and I feel a number of players will be given opportunities. Seeing Wilson or any of our young players playing early would not surprise me as I feel run from defence is something we need to improve

Are you saying saad is having hamstring issues still this preseason. Or are you expecting him to remain having issues??

Not saying he doesn’t have a good footy IQ. But every player that plays the roaming ‘see ball, get ball’ half back at a high level has very high footy IQ. I think Ollie is that calibre, Wilson maybe not yet. Was very impressed with him in the VFL all season, but don’t know whether he’s suited to the role being talked about for him by some fans

It is where he has been training. All being well Wilson will likely play up the ground as he develops but has been bloody impressive in the pre season games and match sims as a running defender.

He is very fit and quick, has poise and has given us more run than anyone else from the back half. Doesn't look out of place against the more seasoned players. There are some players that need time at VFL level and some that can step up quickly. I fit Wilson into the latter.

If I was to pick a side at the moment I would see Ollie, Boyd & Wilson fighting over 2 spots and that is if Saad is fit

IMO watch this space

Had some tightness and is on adjusted program. Is it bad or caution? I don't know
A richmond supporter watching tigers training at the sunshine coast claimed Saad pulled up with what looked like a hamstring at our last session before x-mas (we were training on the next oval). Must have been some truth to that, even if it was just tightness.

Not the first time you have mentioned Carroll, Soapy V. Sounds like a suggestion that if he can stay fit in the pre season, he is a front runner for a spot?

Was a decent prospect before wiping his first year with groin issues. Good hybrid size for a modern defender. Have a feeling they will keep us guessing all pre season for our last addition(s).

I honestly have no idea. First I have really seen of him. Just looks a nice mover and clean with ball

All the players trialling look good. Durdin is very fit (at the moment) Phillips to me has always looked an AFL KPD, DGB is okay without standing out and Will White has something about him. Livewire and clever.
