DIRTY TACTICS AS AFL INTERESTS PANIC

There is a view high-powered AFL officials are in the background playing dirty pool, mindful of the NRL threat and the prospect of a turf war for the hearts and minds of three million WA residents if Perth opens its arms to rugby league’s Bears.

Western Australia has long been regarded as an AFL stronghold via the market duopoly of West Coast Eagles and Fremantle.

The NRL is wading through choppy political waters in a sink-or-swim battle for rugby league’s first WA team since the death of the Western Reds in 1997.

The state’s leading newspaper, the West Australian, has been vicious in its coverage of the NRL’s expansion push to Perth. Last week, V’landys was sensationally accused of having brokered a “secret deal” with Cook, after the ARLC chair told this masthead the NRL had temporarily “downed tools” on talks with the WA government until the election was over.

The NRL insists no formal deal is in place, nor even an in-principle agreement with the WA government.

Such is the uncertainty, the NRL has about four weeks to strike a deal with the WA government or face aborting the Western Bears project, with the ARLC needing clarity on an 18 or 19-team league before kicking off negotiations on the code’s next TV rights deal.

Intriguingly, the West Australian is owned by Seven West Media, which has control of the Seven Network, the free-to-air broadcaster which inked a $1.5 billion deal with the AFL in 2022. Billionaire Kerry Stokes is chairman of the Seven West Media empire fanning the flames of NRL expansion discontent.

Stokes and the AFL ostensibly have unfettered control of the WA market. The NRL’s Western Bears would represent a dangerous market raider.

The AFL is under threat like never before.

The NRL last month released data that showed they have dethroned the AFL as the most-watched code in Australian sport and rugby league’s expansion to Perth would give the sport the bona fide national footprint they have lacked for decades.

“There are dirty tactics to shut the NRL out of Perth,” one industry source told this masthead.

“The AFL is no longer the No.1 code with viewers. By expanding to Perth and Papua New Guinea, the NRL will not only have a national reach, but tentacles globally in the Pacific via PNG.”

Yeah, "the AFL are under threat like never before." Lol. This is how full of their own self-importance they are. Complete disrespect to the code that has been embedded in WA life for well over 100 years.

Claim there is "dirty tactics" by the AFL, then proceed to give no evidence of such at all.
They keep propagating that their the most watched sport. I would like to see how much of that viewership comes from outside NSW and QLD. Didn't an article state that the average viewership in Perth for NRL games was only around 6,000?

Tentacles "globally" .....as in across the torres straight!

I would suggest that this "one industry source" who "told this masthead" stuff was V'Landys himself

pvl seems to have an unhealthy obsession with victoria

be it racing or league - his efforts all seem very earnest ..... as if hes trying to convince himself of his nonsense more than those hes communicating to .... worryingly, a media industry that thrives on in-the-moment MAFS styled controversy seems to enjoy his rent a quote bollocks with feverish glee

[edit] the spiv wouldnt be causing a media rukus to distract from an olympics announcement that will in all likelihood benefit the afl/cricket with a new 60,000 seat oval .... in nrl heartland no less ..... after being promised untold riches by the former qld labor govt re suncorp stadium in the lead up to last years state election ...... he wouldnt be doing that would he ..... surely not :drunk:

The AFL sure have been doing a lot of talking about the nrl in the media recently

Where? mod edit - language

The only talking ALWAYS comes from the NRL admin. IF the AFL even responds to it one bit (which they usually don't)-they are 'scared' and 'rattled' according to *******s like you.

NRL is completely obsessed with the AFL and has a huge inferior complex. AFL barely mentions the NRL. But don't let the facts get in the way of a good yarn and a good attempt to troll you ****in gronk.

the realisation of todays olympics announcements is finally dawning on the league unlimited lot - its not pretty

turns out the pvl puff piece over the weekend was a failed effort at misdirection - hes been exposed ..... and badly

perfect opportunity for roger cook to play hard ball in negotiations on new perth RL team - pvl will be desperate for a result and may be forced to accept unfavourable terms for his code in order to save face and log a 'win'

That stadium was never being built. The team can’t even fill the temporary 4500 capacity ground.

Anyone that's followed the story of that club from the start knows the outcome was inevitable.
The whole point was access to a big land development, the soccer club itself was just part of the story to get there.
Once all the approvals went through it was never going to last long.
