With our 2024 list pretty much settled with national, rookie and preseason drafts to likely net pick 4, Welsh, Keane upgrade and a maybe one or 2 new rookies on top of commitments to Schoenberg, Burgess might be worthy of opening discussion on next offseason.

2025 is pretty much certain to be Tex and Smith's last season.
Scuttlebutt possibly Sam Draper coming, and Obrien going via free agency.

Crowmania out of contract.
Quite a few of the squad now playing for their careers this coming season including Cook.

What does our strategy look like? Are we done with the draft? Look to trade away our 2025 first rounder for proven talent? Dig into 2026 picks as well to make 2026 season our first real challenge for the flag?

The two I would be most keen on are Wanganeen-Milera and Brad Close.

There won't be any "new" rookies taken in the RD, just Schoenberg & Burgess.

The only way we'll have any "new" rookies is if someone cops a season-ending injury and gets put on the Inactive List, allowing us to make a selection in the MSD. Historically, the probability of this happening is (unfortunately) high.

My guess at this stage-

Probable outs:

Tex
Smith
Burgess
Strachan

Possible outs:

Schoenberg
Bond

Potential trade outs:-

Sholl
Berry
Butts
Why is Sholll getting traded every sesson? We lack wingmen & he was our best this sesson.

The other 2 are are a possibility though. If Murray, Worrell & Keane become the preferred 3 tall defenders, then Butts may look for other opportunities. Berry could depend on Crouch.

ROB is the other one who may be traded if he wants to be in Melbourne.

Reckon Bond is a keeper as a role player.

Agree with your 4 outs.

ROB is a UFA, so unlikely to be traded - can just walk to his preferred team if he chooses to do so.
That's fine by me... then grab the compo & find another ruckman who is decent around the ground.

Contracted until end of 2025
Wayne Milera - keep
Luke Nankervis - keep
Reilly O'Brien - ?
Nick Murray- keep
Kieran Strachan - delist
Zac Taylor - keep
Harry Schoenberg- delist
Lachlan Murphy- delist
Matthew Crouch - keep
Toby Murray (R) - keep
Karl Gallagher (R, Cat B) - keep
Brodie Smith - retire
Taylor Walker retire
Hugh Bond - keep
Chris Burgess delist

6 list spots , possibly 7 depending on ROB.

Should really have delisted another 2 in 2024, and had 4 list changes in 2025

Still think we get rid of Crouch next year. He had few decent games in 2023 but since then he has been OK in contests but an absolute liability in field play, he is to defensive, two way running as Rob is to contested marking

We may try playing wingmen who don’t have the physique of a small child, see how that goes.

I’m always confused why Butts keeps getting thrown up as expendable. Our best lockdown defender whose contests lost and goals against, stack up against the best in the comp.

Pls when coming up with next seasons exiting players, consider the effect of what you choose on the experience profile.

Likely to be 3 to maybe 5 exits next year, or we undo the improvements we did this year. To get 4 or 5 exits we have to be getting trades in.

No trades= 3 exits

Thought Crouch was the best of his player type this year. Miles better than Laird or Berry and looked to kick forward more than he used to. You can tell how much work they've done on minimizing the backwards handball. I think he deserves a contract extension but the club may not see it that way at the end of 2025.

Just my opinion, think we have plenty of payers to play on the wing.

Curtin should play there this year imo, a la GWS with Finn Callaghan’s development.
Soli should get more mid time but still play some wing.
Hinge should play some wing with the plethora of half backs we have.
Cumming half back or wing.
Even Worrell would be exciting given a bit of wing occasionally, Butts kpd and have Keane intercept.

Half the games also have a fat side dead wing anyway.
so I would trade Scholl in a heartbeat if there was a suitor.

Sholl was our best wingman last year.

Imo, we shouldn't be looking to trade players who are in our best side.

Curtin's role is unknown.
Hinge is more suited as a defender.
Cumming no doubt can play wing.
Worrell hasn't played any wing.

We normally play 3 wingmen.

We play 3 guys that play mostly wing, at least. Other guys rotate through as well, but spend most of the time in other positions

Who they are in R1 is kinda dependent on who we draft, but at this stage I’d go Curtin/Sholl/Nank

And how did that go for us ?
My comment was on the future not the past, Scholl should not be in our best side next year.
Plenty of other options with higher ceilings now.

Why would we look to trade any best 22 player, or even best 30 player, under 30 years old?

The picK we get won't be worth the player you lose, because that's the way it works. And the draftee won't get to even that lesser value for some years.

It makes us weaker now and in the future.

Sholl is our best winger. We don't yet have the other winger locked in.

Trading Sholl in particular makes no sense.

If Sholl falls out of the top 30,the sure, let's reassess then.

If Cumming, Dawson, Nankervis, Curtin are able nail down that role this year AND we traded in Wanganeen-Milera then Sholl would definitely be a candidate for trade (both for his sake and ours).

In short I don’t believe Scholl will be in our best 22 by years end and will be depth playing SANFL.
Whether we trade or keep him doesn’t really fuss me next year but imo Curtin must be given a wing just as GWS did
with Finn, the other can be won by the best of the overflow we have from half back which I assume will be Hinge
I will be monitoring t.o.g and reckon Scholl’s takes a dive this season. As said just my thoughts on how we should progress.

I think wing is probably the position least suited to Curtin's weapons. But, if:
  • all of Cumming, Dawson, Nankervis and Curtin went past Sholl for that wing/ half back role AND
  • NWM is traded in AND
  • Sholl fell out of the best 30,
then sure.

But I think the original post was that we should trade Sholl now, before any of that happened. I don't think that would be a good idea.

Edit: Floating Doughnut has clarified they meant end of next year. Let's get to the end of next year and see.

Would we trade out Nank, if Sholl is still ahead of him? (I wouldn't)
