The fact that the Bris / Allen thing came out the same day as the news about WCE pitching to Harley Reid tells you, IMO, it has come from Allen's management. Desperately trying to get WCE to up their offer.

If Allen is good to go it's a no brainer looking at our forward stocks.

The query is his fitness which you'd think the club would be on top of . The appeal is the free agency aspect.

When you look at who's gettable you keep coming back to him if we can get him fit.
I think that just it really. It is about who is getable and who we can afford, from a trade POV. We need someone, ideally younger and better than Day who can fill a role.
Hippy is 28 this year so should still have a bit of time left, Logan is 20 next month and Gallop looks like he might have the goods in the future.
Logan and Hippy are such good runners that you could, in theory probably play 4 talls if you wanted Allen and Gallop in the team. Not saying we will go this route but I don't think it would cost us spread and run.

He could want to come to us anyway, but from a manager's perspective whatever you can get on the table from anybody helps your bargaining chips.

Half irrelevant . A lot can happen in nearly 20 games and from our perspective if we want him we just hope he stays fit and well without tearing it up .

Something that’s been missed in all this, is just before the Allen and Mitchell meeting broke, Pyke said in an interview that WC are considering asking the AFL for draft assistance, i.e priority pick/s.

Just putting a little pressure on the AFL to massage their compensation formula, if the offers to Allen don’t quite trigger band 1 compensation.
The parallel’s with the recruiting of Joe are very similar.
  • Allen will be the same age as Joe if he arrives at Brisbane.
  • Both players wanting out of a club that’s not really a great place to be.
  • Both have/had injury concerns.
  • Joe is the better footballer, but Allen was building nicely before he got injured. He kicked 53.23 in his 5th year, Joe kicked 65.39 in his 5th year (before their respective injuries hit).

One thing is certain - if Allen does come to Brisbane as a FA, guaranteed Starcevich won’t be heading to WC as a FA!

He’ll of a negotiation tactic if that’s what it is, like a scorned x lover.
All appears as though they are kind of pushing him out anyway.
Maybe so they can throw the kitchen sink at Reid.

Depends whether you think part of the pitch to Harley involves punting established players who will help speed up the rebuild.

If the club does get Allen, they know best especially in the cap space area.
As a team we appear to only have one week spot at this point in time that being Joes 2024 position.

Key forwards at present: Hippy (204cm), Morris (191), Day (196)
Then: Smith (202), Gardiner (192), Fort (204), Gallop (194), Ryan (200).
Next: Possibly Deedee (190) just to get him in the side & Lloyd (193)

It will be interesting to see how our forwards both tall and small perform this year. So far, it's a pass as we are 4-0.
At present it appears to me that the plan is just to be not out marked in forward contests.
That won't happen at times but taking contested marks is not easy for forwards or defenders.
The most contested marks taken by individual players in our 4 games is 2 and that includes the opposition.

So, it is up to the smalls mostly to make the best of the groundballs. Be it goals, tackles stoppages.
Lucky we have a lot of options: Cameron, Lohmann, Bailey, Ah-Chee, Rayner, Levi, Will, McKenna, Reville even Neale and Dunkley for very short stints
Then McLachlan, Craven

To date the Lions have scored 368 points this year compared to 339 last year.

If Allen moved as a free agent for Band 1 compo, then West Coast would need to trade for Starcevich (if he was more interested in his future finances and being back in Perth than on-field success). West Coast has Hawthorn's first round pick (15-18?), fair compo for Starce? Starce is a far better player than Schultz, who went for a future first and pick 34.

Repeat concussions make Starcevich pretty unattractive for West Coast for a long term contract.

How do the Lions get repeat concussions "right"?

The concussion history doesnt magically reset and disappear.

You can't. It's a ticking time bomb. Something minor could set it off at any time just like with McCartin at the Swans or Adams with us. Similar to Pucovski in cricket. Any small bump can trigger it. No one would be able to give a long term contract to Starc without a clear injury clause to limit payments. I feel sorry for him but if I were Starc I would have one eye on life after footy.

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. - Mark Twain

I won't be arguing with you then ;)

The big question is: was he sitting on a couch cause he had to, or was it purely precautionary.

The former - his main worry now should be life after footy.
The latter - he might well be totally fine. The last concussion looked a bit worrying but one angle made it look like a head clash

Hindsight and all but playing him so soon after the last concussion was an error. I wonder if they need a new layer to the protocol second concussion in say 6 months, a new minimum time off? Yes a player might miss finals. It’s too important an issue to muck around with though

I think if he retires early it triggers a payout, but i’d be comfortable with us looking after him even if it affects our cap somewhat.

I can't see anyone want to commit to a LTC as things stand . It's up to us to look after him and get him right. And then give him a contract.

If he's keen - I think we can sign him for 2 so it'll take the pressure off him. If he gets the body right in that period and set himself up for a longer payout with us or elsewhere, then that's good outcome for him.

I'd offer 2 purely because he's our premiership player and been there with us all the way through the rebuild culminating in winning it. He deserves it at least from us so there's a bit of security for him.
