Still reckon we need another option up forward if we lose Charles or H during the year. When that news report came through last week with big H holding his shoulder at training, it put the fear of god in me.

Last year we delisted/traded Owies (forward), Martin (forward), Cunners (forward/mid) and Kennedy, who was largely playing as a forward during the back half of the season.

We've since brought in Haynes (defender), Carroll (defender), O'Farrell (defender), Charleson (defender), as well as Jagga and the Campo's (mids). We're also moving JSOS down back, and Cincotta will return at some stage.

Lem is a tall forward option but doesn't particularly play tall. For mine, we definitely needs another forward who can take a grab aka McMahon.
Agreed

while I'd like to add a guy like Phillips, McMahon does make more sense and he could also chopout as a tallish 3rd defender

I'd also contemplate other options

If, Jsos can compete as a 3rd tall and with adding Haynes, could we throw Gov forward and still take Phillips?

We all know Gov struggled as s forward when we were a poor side, but he could give us a dynamic forward line now

Ultimately, if we do suffer an injury to a tall forward, it's easier to manufacture a forward line, tall or small

A good lockdown key back needs pace off the mark. Does JSOS have that first 5m burst?
Some KP forwards, yes, he’ll get beaten for pace, great opposition ball movement particularly…
If he can become a consistent lockdown KPD, who can become a decent shut down player, shows the IQ and basic defensive nous to limit his opponents, then we may just possibly solve a position which is vital, one we all know we are crying out for while we’re contesting…

I'm thinking this, too. He can play forward and back and is only 22 years of age ... the same size as Phillips, but as he is 3 years younger, he may have more scope for improvement.
He can take a good contested mark (although from the very little I've seen, maybe not as good as Phillips).
He has proven to be a good key forward in the reserves so I think he could be a key back also, if called upon.
I wouldn't be disappointed, though, if we do go with Phillips.

I think that is overrated in today's game of swamping the forwards. Harry is super fast and charlie no slouch as a runner but neither get any free ball. It is all pack marking or 1 v 2 contested marking with the third man up. Charlie takes a lot of contested marks but that doesnt use any speed off the mark.

If our midfield chase and our backs stop zoning and giving away 15 metres of space, JSoS should be fine. Haynes should transform our smarts with his intercepts if his body/form holds up.

For our defence, the only thing i'm worried about is Hamill.

I think it partly depends on how much faith we have in Young. Aside from him there is nobody on our list or train on group, who can play number 1 stopper if Weitering goes down. If we have written Young off, then we need Phillips to cover Weitering.

Question:
Now that Carroll has been re-signed and Sam Durdin let go...

Is there any more spots available?

2 official train-ons per list spot, so SD was the 1st voted off Train-on Island.
DG-B & McMahon will battle it out for the last spot*, or we’ll hold over (+ NN’s possible Inactive position) until the MSD.
*VFL players still in contention from Walter White, E.Phillips, F.Evans or any other eligible non-selected draftee / DFA.

McMahon's way too slight to be a key forward. Reckon he fits the Jack Martin role more. Lemmy is much more of a key forward than he is

Interesting take. Cant say I’ve seen any evidence to agree with you.
With a VFL lens on, McMahon was a much more effective & damaging key tall last year than Lemmey. By a mile in fact.

He won the our VFL team B&F and was indeed named CHF in the VFL team of the year.

I’d be keen on us taking McMahon. Leads up at the ball. Has good forward craft. Great hands and is a bloody good kick for goal.

I hope we take McMahon...

If Harry and Charlie go down...we need a real key forward....
And for the future as well as he is only 22.

The same could be said for Weitering, not sure McMahon is a key position player at Afl level.
Phillips would make more sense as not sure there is much faith in Young considering we asked him to explore his options.

So just because he was better in the VFL last year than a second year key forward, that makes him a better player? Lemmey is clearly a project with a high ceiling, McMahon is not. Hence why he was delisted by a club that had almost no key forward depth at the time.

Just cause he plays well at VFL level, doesn’t mean that will automatically transfer to AFL level. Some of the best players in the VFL are either failed AFL players, or players that have no interest in them from AFL clubs

Mate I’m just pointing that there is no evidence to suggest Lemmey has a higher ceiling.

McMahon is only one year older than him but has clearly shown more AFL attributes than Lemmey has at this stage after two seasons in an AFL program.

Yes, you could argue McMahon had his chance and has been delisted but his form post being delisted has improved significantly and we all know key position players take time. (And yes I know Lemmey is in the same boat).

Also, you could question why Lemmey went from being a projected top 5 pick to a mid 3rd round pick…perhaps the other clubs don’t see that ceiling.

I hope he makes it big Lem but I’d simply like to see McMahon given another opportunity given his dominance as a 21/22yo CHF at VFL level.

p.s note your concern on McMahon’s build. My concern with Lem is he’s a bit Josh Schache like. Has the skill level but does he have the competitiveness?

Interesting discussion, personally I still have high hopes for Lem. He hopefully will have a great season and show us all that

he really does have it. I do like McMahon as well, dominated last year in the magoos. However it is now a huge difference

between the two comps. Hopefully he has spent a lot of time in the gym over the summer and put on some muscle. Coming

up against the likes of Moore, May and Taylor. He will need to be stronger to compete. This is the only knock on him

though, like the way he goes about it. He gets my vote, for promotion.

There is still a PSSP spot available and there is the Newy LTI spot if he really is done for the year.

I think that we're going to take the PSSP slot and leave the LTI spot until the MSD and see where Newy is in his recovery.

McMahon was only delisted because Pies wanted experience as they were right in the premiership window. Pies picked up mcstay McMahon got delisted

Correct. He was also one of those kids who lost an important year of development during the covid period. Got squeezed out of the Collingwood list much to the angst of a number of their supporters.

And in the words of Blighty, I couldn't give a rat's tossbag if he has a lighter frame....he's excellent overhead, can find space on a lead, and a beautiful set shot at goal. All the traits required of an AFL 'key' forward - whatever that means.

He's well ahead of Lem in his development - and as some of us have mentioned previously, Lem doesn't play tall, just as Owies didn't play small. Him and McMahon are different types of player despite them both being around the 200cm.

I'm big on McMahon. He's done everything right and everything we've asked of him.

It's acquisitions like this that would solidfy our VFL program as a serious pathway for others still looking to make it.

It's also a great list move in terms of the coverage it provides at both ends of the ground at a low price.

Liam is similar build to Jack Gunstone at same age, slightly taller. Think he could play that role.
