I think you missed my point - I was referring to us having no adequate cover for Weitering in his role as a Key Defender, Young can pinch hit for a week or two, but as we have seen when the heat is on he wilts under pressure.

Newmanā€™s role as a half back distributor can be well covered by as youā€™ve said Boyd, or Docherty, or even McGovern (if heā€™s not asked to be playing as a defensive tall).
Prefer Gov in this role rather than defending.

He doesnā€™t have to be at his best to be above a lot of the players you mentioned.

Suggesting that Durdin/Phillips/McMahon at ā€œfit and near their bestā€ are ahead of Haynes is crazy.

Projecting Silvagni to be ahead of him is optimism more than it is expectation. First time in a new position coming off a year long injury, itā€™s going to take time.
Disagree

Care to elaborate?

While I hope all of Durdin/McMahon/Phillips and SOS are able to put it together and have good years, Haynes is a cut above them until proven otherwise.

He did play 9 games of VFL last year, in those games he averaged 31 disposals and 11 marks. Hes not a VFL player and we havenā€™t brought him in to be one.

Heā€™s an experienced head who is an elite mark of the footy, heā€™s only on a 1 year deal and we are in win now mode. Barring someone absolutely leaping out of the box in preseason he is the obvious first choice

I dont think Haynes was brought in to play 2nds. He could have been depth at GWS.
From his interviews it sounds like we have a role in mind for him.

I get the arguments against but I'd be surprised if he isnt in our 23 round 1.

I'd be very surprised if he is playing VFL

I really hope a Young, Durdin, Silvagni or Phillips step up and can take the major Key forward every week.

Release Weitering to intercept/third man up and use his great kicking and McGovern as well as third tall defender where he can do the same.

These three surrounded by runners like Saad Boyd Ollie Docherty Wilson L.Campo Cowan is my dream scenario

Yeap prefer him as the interceptor and distributor

Cowan Weitering Gov
Boyd Haynes Saad
Ollie

Doc to chopout when needed

Rest fighting for a spot, Jsos, Young and the kids building their game at VFL level

Also hope we sign Phillips, gives us greater options

After the 2 re-signings of Saad & Cerra today, out of contract at end of this year ā€¦

He's 33 early this year and last year he played 9 VFL games. He wasn't a first choice best 22

At his best he was a heck of player and I can see him playing a role at times. The Newman injury opens up another spot but I would be disappointed if he plays most weeks as we have Weitering McGovern Silvagni Cowan Young Durdin/Phillips, maybe McMahon that IMO should be ahead of him if fit and playing near their best
He's a modern day CHB type, which Marchbank was supposed to be for us. McGovern is only a pinch hitting CHB, Cowan isn't, Silvagni maybe, Young is more your fullback, Durdin the same, not sure about Phillips or McMahon.

We are a bit short on for talent in this area. A lot of pinch hitters who are more suited to other roles.

Honestly I think it's out of Haynes and Silvagni and that's a hope. The rest can play the role but not at a very good level IMO.

The other way this works is if Weitering is released by someone taking his fullback role. Weitering playing more that CHB role later in the season was really good. Young would need to get bigger and stronger to be consistent. Durding is a good possibility and I really am not sure or confident in the rest.

Honestly, I think we will be really keen to recruit for this position at the end of next year. I can really see us chasing a small forward and a key defender.

Not having a crack at Haynes but he is 33 and past his best. People seem to think he is still a top line player. I also don't agree with "Modern CHB" type. It's total defence now and different roles. You have a combination of talls, mobile talls and runners

He was brought in as cheap depth. It's what we need. He will play games and be more than handy.

As I said (and ususal suspects have jumped on) I hope we go past him and have players like Jack, Durdin/Phillips McGovern Cowan Young filling the spots to support Weitering. Means we are improving and doing very well

Just my take

Interesting exercise to go through and consider. Hard to find the 7-10 that a list usually turns over each year

2025
1.
Jack Silvagni: Id be surprised if he doesnā€™t get at least 1 more.
3. Jesse Motlop: Iā€™d give him another 2, needs a better year though
11. Mitch McGovern: Iā€™d be happy to add a year on as we did with Saad
12. Tom De Koning: #1 priority
14. Orazio Fantasia: Would have to have a much improved year to get another contract
15. Sam Docherty: If his body holds up Iā€™d offer a year
17. Brodie Kemp: big year, should have trade value if it doesnā€™t go to plan but ideally another 2 years
24. Nic Newman: Add on 1 year
26. Nick Haynes: Wait and see
29. George Hewett (RFA): Iā€™d like to see a 2-3 year extension
31. Harry Lemmey: another who needs a big year
34. Rob Monahan (International Rookie Cat B): donā€™t know how the rules work but no harm in having him around
35. Billy Wilson: 2 year extension
36. Cooper Lord - MSD (Rookie): 2 year extension
39. Alex Cincotta (Pre-season SSP 2023): Iā€™d like to see him stay but with his injury he might have to wait
41. Matt Duffy (International Rookie Cat B) ? Same as monahan but a year behind
