I got a little depressed reading this … cincotta campo doc lord and a bunch of flaky half forwards as our second string midfielders …. Hopefully cerra walsh acres hollands play well or we are cooked
I said this earlier in the year that we need a mini rebuild. The rule changes have caught us off guard. Out with the slow and injury plagued and in with some speed and class.

Jagga Smith
Pick 38

Rob Innes

(Praying for some coaching changes)

Let’s kick this up a notch Graeme!

So 6 off the Senior List, with the addition of Haynes and then Boyd to be elevated means 4 vacancies.

Add Lord to the rookie list, subtract Boyd and the 3 cut means 3 Rookie vacancies.
As others have mentioned losing Carrol and Kennedy leaves the midfield cupboard pretty bare.

Both played lots this year, who we add via the draft will be interesting, I think we have lost a bit of depth with Kennedy, Owies and Carrol leaving

A fit Walsh & Cerra makes a massive difference. Hewett as well. That is a top group

Elijah will improve and then there is Docherty and I expect a bit from Lord

Pick 3 could easily step up and expectations internally are high for Ben Camporeale. Wilson another. Cincotta is underrated

I expect Fogarty Williams Motlop Durdin to have midfield minutes as well. I’d love to see Kemp in there

As is usual fitness in the key

All good points. And ultimately you can't plan your list management around another injury catastrophe. Yes, if all our mids go down it would be handy to have Jack C but if all our mids go down we are pretty stuffed regardless. As good as "next man up" is (I get why the club has that mantra internally), realistically we are not making top 4 or winning a flag unless we get a decent injury run. Need to have a balanced list and ability to cover the odd player when required (which we do) but can't plan around mayhem like we had this year.

Could easily have got rid of Cotrell and Fantasia if we really needed list spots. Instead we get rid of our best clubman who played every game in practically every position asked. And Carrol who is only 22 years old.

Cerra has done hammy 5 times in the last 12 months? These are the facts. We'd be lucky to get 15 games out of him next season. Walsh has a bad back and may never truly recover to get to his best again.

I think that was the right call.on Carroll.

To be an AFL footballer you need one of three primary abilities: you need to be able to get the ball, you need elite disposal or you need to have scoreboard impact. If you don't have any of those the options are extremely limited.

Carroll played 21 games (7 as sub) in three years and didn't show any of those primary qualities. Only hit 20 touches once, disposal ordinary, only 9 shots at.goal in 21 games.

It's always hard when blokes have clear secondary attributes - Carroll seems tough, works hard, good clubman.

I think a good metric for midfielder impact is disposals + tackles + score (ie goal = 6 points). By this measure 25 is a 'pass', 30 = good game, 40=excellent. Carroll hit a pass mark only once, with 26pts in his debut. As a contrast, Eli Hollands prior to this year (ie same age, 14 career games vs 14 complete games for Carroll) hit a pass mark 5x and had a career best of 37pts. Ollie Hollands hit a 'pass' level 5x this year despite being a year younger and having a bit of second year blues.

Basically, Carroll seems like a good bloke and a good clubman but just wasn't very good. Better to give time to Lord, Binns, Camporeale and pick 3 IMO

His trip to Qatar was a success and he is running without pain for first time in years. Trust the process and the new fitness team

Walsh is actually fine. Just needs a pre season

Wilson has never played midfield at VFL level.
Ollie will go to HB and Cottrelll isn’t a wingman

Club has finally put faith in the next generation which I applaud
How many half backs do we need? Hollands, Cowan, Wilson, Newman, Saad, McGovern, Boyd

Wilson recruited to play midfield

Hollands Cowan Boyd McGovern can also fill other roles.

You need depth and options. You need to trust the youth as the current players haven’t got it done so far

IMO our list looks the best and most balanced in years

By the same token - why hold on to a supporting cast that's repeatedly come up short?
For me the underlying issue was injuries and injury management. Our list changes indicates panic from the MC and recruiting team. Yes, some players like Marchbank, Cuningham, Martin, Durdin needed to go. But getting rid of Kennedy, and Carroll whilst bringing in a 33 year old player who is cooked is bewildering.

Fair to say you and I see it very differently 👍

I think the club is finally addressing the slow ball movement issue this off season.
Cunners is the only exception, and he was never available.

Binns for starters. We have 4 wingmen on our list at present. Hollands, Acres, Cottrell, Binns. The same amount of Starting Mids. Crazy

Are you suggesting 4 wingmen is too many or too few? 44 on the list. I'd suggest you need 4 specialist wingers for the senior and reserves side, plus another couple who are more utilities. We will add another winger type in Lucas Camporeale in the draft, and have others who could go to the wing if required.

How many Daicos,Reid and Sheezel are out there in previous drafts? It's putting a fair bit of pressure on pick three.

Walsh stepped up in season one too. This sort of thing has become more and more prevalent in the AFL. The pathway has made these kids step up more quickly, at least the ones at the top of the draft. All teams have a couple of youngsters in them.

I don't agree on Cottrell, we really missed him this year with his gut running and ability to pop up for a goal or two.

Fantasia I agree with and I also would have liked to see J Carroll given another year.

Maybe they are going to push Corey Durdin in to the midfield a bit more.
