For me it's a combination of all of the above, but my focus is getting rookies off the field.

It's early days in the upgrade cycle, so losing a few underperforming rookies and jumping on the cash generators doesn't release much for upgrades so I'm currently targeting cheap keepers, Petracca, Moore and Stewart are gettable at this point.

I'll definitely be punting the likes of Lashcroft, Reid, Trainor and Bice when the opportunity presents to some higher priced premos, particularly if a good rookie shows up.

The key though is to have a very strong bench that can be rotated on field once those better rookies are lost.

I'm hoping to have just 3 on ground after round 7 and as each one gets removed the expectation is that the bench stays strong and I'll hit the luxury upgrade earlier than most.
A forgotten rule. Get rooks off the field!
All these one up one downs involve mid pricers and rookies.
Run out mid pricers and it’s double down then one up one down.
A bench of 7 (dead r3) and it’s short lived.

Downgrading a 460k rookie (e.g M.Reid) to low cost rookie with low BE (e.g El Hawli) @ $260k nets you $200k

Upgrading another rook @ $460k can then only net you $660k player.

Not really sustainable to go 1-1.

And if you're looking for a $1m+ premo (e.g Daicos), you're looking at 3 trades to get there.

That's what the early mid-pricers are for

Does anyone else feel like they're constantly 1 week behind on the rookies?
I got on Bice a week late, Maric a week late, Moraes a week late, possibly Gross and Cleary this week (a week late).
Its like checkers...next week there'll be more that I feel like i'm a week late on (probably El-Hawli, Carroll etc).

I guess it's better than taking the punt on a 1 gamer who then cops a vest, or gets dropped. Can't nail them all. Overall i'm pretty happy with the shape of my bench / rookies. Lots of idle cash waiting to be grabbed.

so with your 1 up 1 downs, who have the Ups been to?
I've done the same, culled midpricers to bring in keepers.

OUT: Taylor, Perryman, Day, SDK, NOD, Roberts
IN: NWM, Rankine, Brayshaw, Naicos

Started with 2 on field rookies, now up to 5 (Trainor, Bice, ZReid, Lashcroft, Davidson).

Next week I'll have to go shopping in that 800k range, but I'll be able to afford to get a rookie off field with a 1 up 1 down of Davidson & Hall.

I've done:

Sanders > Clohesy, Knevitt > Dawson

Week after I did

Day > Maric, Campo > Moraes to bank cash and get rid of two red dots

Then

SDK > Bice, Freijah > Whitfield (with around 400k spare)

This week, I'm doing,

Clohesy > SEH
Lindsay > Daicos

Leaving me with $0

And then I'll go down two stalling rookies next week for Cleary & another rookie

so you're going for the uber premos on the upgrades.
Daicos at a good discount, but still $1m

Yeah I am, I'm not saying it's the right thing to do at all but just what I'm doing and how I have fun with it. Probably better strategies in the long run but I think getting those ubers early will allow me to focus on cash gen for a few weeks without hurting score too much.

In the same boat. I either jumped on them a week late or not at all because I was too late.

Have started looking seriously at Jordan Ridley. He was arguably 5 or so points underpriced at the start of the year due to a red vest last year. Scored a 26 in Round 1 which has brought his price down another $100k. Scored a ton last week, is on kick-in duties, and has the juicy Essendon run through to the byes. Should be about 15 points of upside IMO.

Its a bit awkward as he's a DEF so it means I'm locked out of fielding either Reid or Trainor. Would leave me fielding Bice, Ashcroft, Davidson and SEH/Gross as rooks which I'm fairly content with.

Right now I'd argue that there hasn't been any true upgrades, more a shuffling of MP's to rookies and keepers. Of course that's understandable and the best way of approaching the upgrade season.

But it's vital to have the cash generators. I'm looking at some of the current leading teams, whilst they have the some of the ubers their benches are shite.

Ridley's body is cooked. He has had concussion issues not to mention a heap of soft tissue injuries.

I'd take Stewart for an additional 50k. Yes I am aware Stewart's also had his share of issues but he has a proven history of averaging 90+.

I’ve basically focused on fixing up rookies and upgrading underperforming starters and now I’m at the stage where I’m starting to do some true upgrades and it started this week

My midfield looks pretty shored up now with my big dogs (Zerrett who is my first real one up one down upgrade this week, Dawson, Dunks, Bray, Green and Clarry) and Mackenzie and Davidson at M7 and M8, forward is fine with Maric and Levi running the show at F5/6 and having the popular names lead the first four , the rucks I’ll leave unless they’re injured, so both those lines will remain untouched for a little bit unless selection or injury forces my hand.

I’m thinking of maintaining a DEF trade focus over the next couple of weeks, have FOS/Moraes/Stone/A Reid/ ready to downgrade and Reid and Trainor probably the priorities and it shouldn’t take too much to upgrade them as they have a lot more money to make. Would have to be in the 700-800s range but it’s an upgrade

As for Zerrett one up one down, I’ve taken Hall up to him, via Farrell down to Carroll

Essendon defenders (bar Reid lol) aren’t high scorers in general, McGrath and Redman have burnt people in the past too, I’d argue that Martin has been the best and he doesnt play in defence anymore

Definitely feeling this. Constantly being a week behind has me a couple hundred k in cash gen behind already (21.1 team value + 200k ITB), means I cant afford the likes of Daicos this week and that makes me feel another week behind

With so many good rookies coming up early it feels like a roll of the dice. Expect its gonna dry up hard around the byes and Rd 12 will have us all crying. Missing a week on Bice, Cleary Etc is huge. Those two are +180k in their own right this week if u went early
