We may end up going bang between what we are both saying. I think we may run at an extra rookie or whatever, possibly save one for the SPP or whatever. The main thing should be match the 3 academy kids see what we have left, if it's nothing move on, perhaps take a rookie inside mid or whatever,
It's not really just what I'm saying, it's what the club always does (aside from 1 year in the last 12+ where they took just 3 and also retained 2 MSD picks).

And again, where you have to match academy bids doesn't dictate whether we have spots available or not, if it's a late pick or rookie where we address needs, so be it.

A lot depends on what Chad does. All the speculation suggests he’s going to sign a 2 year deal, but I’m still not sold on that.

For arguments sake, if he does decide to leave, and he goes to West Coast, we will almost certainly bank their first two round picks they have this year (I’m not including future picks in this that we will most likely receive as well).

So in this scenario, we would get a top 2 or 3 pick which would be someone like Cooper Duff-Tytler, Willem Duursma, or Fred Rodriguez.
The second first round pick (tied to Hawthorn) would likely be used as points to match bids.

I personally like Willem Duursma out of those options, so we could end up with a draft hand of…
  • Willem Duursma (hybrid mid)
  • Max King (hybrid mid/FWD)
  • Noah Chamberlain (FWD)
  • Lachlan Carmichael (rebound DEF)

This is why I’m not fretting about Chad leaving, because that is a hell of a draft haul, and that’s not even including future picks we will most likely get out of the Chad trade as well.
That’s rebuilding on the run.

This is a big hypothetical, but this is scenario I am in favour of, personally.

Agree although I’d take their f1 this year (tied to them) and their f1 next year. The Hawks one would just be chewed up. If Chad does leave we will get a bounty from WCE this is the year where we would get a good deal that’s win-win.

That said I’m thinking he probably resigns to FA and I’m not sure that’s a good or bad thing.

I can see a world where we get their first 2 picks this year, as well as their first next year, so their Hawthorn pick won’t be “chewed up”, so to speak, it’ll be used to obtain points to match bids. We will definitely need it if an early bid comes for King (Twomey says some clubs rate him in the top 5).
Oscar Allen looks likely to leave (my prediction), so they will get a high end compensation pick, which would offset trading their first pick this year.

I’m most likely in the minority here, but him signing for 2 years to FA is my least preferred option. It’s either sign long term, or go this year.
I’m not particularly hyped about getting a compensation pick in the 15-20 range if he leaves as a RFA.

We aren’t getting 3 “firsts” well not unless our first/second are going back which is a bit redundant. Chad is very good but even Judd didn’t get that much. A top 3 plus a top 5 next year is a lot and then you can debate some steaknives but that’s on the very fair side.

I agree with you, I’ve said a few times that unless it’s 3+ I’d actually make the hard call this year, people will say just match and force a trade but really clubs don’t do that and it’s a significantly worse draft for every club in 2 years

Given Riak's AC joint surgery and potential recovery time, I wonder whether there'd be a temptation to put him on the inactive list to open up a MSD spot?

Think it will come down to whether they think he'll come back at any point this season or not. If they think he is a chance for at least a month at VFL level then they won't do it but if not they will rule him out for the season and take the chance depending on who is available.

2 firsts would be very good value for him.

But there's a really solid chance that no one in this draft at all ends up being as good as Chad. They might be but even if they are it will probably take a few years, 3-5 to get there. We may not select one of the at best 3 players who are better than him. think of players like Dangerfield Fyfe and Neale. None were considered top 5 picks.

And then there's the list situation. We're at a win now point not trying to build for the future. It doesn't really fit with our broad meta strategy to go flipping him for picks.

It's enough that if he goes there is a bright side but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. There's a reason the club really wants him to stay.

If(when) Oscar Allen leaves the Eagles, they'll probably get a band 1 compo pick, so will have pick 1 and pick 2(+ Hawks pick) available to use in a Warner trade if that eventuates.

Can't see why the Eagles would offer us anything more than one of the high picks.

Dumb idea but should we be looking at Neil Erasmus who is an absolute accumulator at WAFL level which is something we don't really have in our midfield, surely it would be a dump pick needed to get him

IMO, the guy is just about to break out. Someone is going to fall out of that Freo (alongside Darcy) midfield group very soon though.
Same at GC, both midfield groups are young and could be set and forget for the next 5 or more years.
There's no room for players to develop.... we should be sneakily asking some questions

Teams need to start going after Hawthorn players like they are going after everyone else's.

They have Newcombe, Watson, McKenzie, Weddle and Moore all uncontracted at the end of next year.

If I am a team like St Kilda (or any team with cap space), I am offering all of them 1mil+. Even if none of them say yes, at least you force Hawthorn to pay up.

The way Patracca acted last night after the game there's a very real chance he will want out. Don't think we would be a chance. In saying that he would be a massive get if we could in some way in hell get him.

"Probably not, I don't think," Beatson said.

Beatson explained why the Swans wouldn't try to land Green, who seems a natural fit for a club that could do with more midfield talent.

"We might take a different type of midfielder. I'm not into bidding for any Academy or NGA (Next Generation Academy) player for the sake of trying to get another club to match," Beatson said.

"If that was the player that we wanted, we would bid for them, but we would prefer to call the name of the player that we want and that we'd get, so that's what we'll do."

Player Beatson decided we needed more than Tom Green, Dylan Stephens.

We wouldn't have gotten Green anyway and would have ended up with Stephens, who looked a reasonable choice at the time, just not later.

Maybe not but the fact we did not even try indicated for some reason we rated Stephens higher than Green. Even if we did, Green was exactly the sort of player we needed, in fact we still need as we have no inside midfield bulls who can get high clearance numbers even 5 years later.

The fact Beatson still does not seem to recognise this need is a concern.
