Gather Round tickets snapped up in record time

The AFL is pleased to announce that more than 195,000 Gather Round…Festival of Footy tickets have sold… with five of the nine games sold out, 20,000 more than this time last year.

Member on sale on Tuesday saw a significant uplift in demand for tickets this year, selling more than 100,000 tickets in the first four hours, in comparison to the same amount in 24 hours last year.

This year there are an extra 47,000 tickets on offer for fans with the two Saturday matches being ticketed separately.

Tickets still remain for Collingwood vs Sydney Swans on Friday night, Carlton vs West Coast on Saturday afternoon, Melbourne vs Essendon on Saturday night and a very limited number of restricted view tickets and tickets for the Pepsi Collective for Port Adelaide vs Hawthorn on Sunday evening.

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said it was clear Gather Round momentum was not slowly down.

“The demand for tickets this year was significantly higher than the first two Gather Rounds, with more than 195,000 tickets being purchased in the first two days,” said Mr Dillon.

“A ticket to the matches at the Barossa Park was always going to be one of the hottest tickets in town and the fans have certainly illustrated that by selling out both matches so quickly.”

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said: “Gather Round continues to exceed all expectations.

“We are honoured that so many footy fans from around the country are making the commitment to travel to our beautiful state to experience this event like no other.

“They’ll be truly welcome.

“If you haven’t got a ticket already – get in quick!”

Tickets for the remaining matches can be found here.

I worry for the crowd at the G next Saturday arvo for Dees vs Freo...

Just reflect back to Rd11 2022. Melbourne have just won the 2021 premiership at Perth Stadium and are now undefeated after 10 games in 2022. They are hosting fourth place Dockers, and achieve the Demons largest home crowd against Fremantle with 29,812.

The 1:20pm start for Dees v Dockers does play into their hands a little bit. But yeah, over the Easter break, I can’t see more than 18k attending that match.

Next Saturday could be disastrous.

Melbourne v Fremantle MCG
Richmond v Gold Coast Marvel

The last three Dees v Freo games have drawn (29,154, 29,812 and 21,365)
and Tigers Marvel home games have drawn 21,375 (v the Saints), 23,644 (v the Suns) and 23,549 (v Freo)

Getting 45,000 to both matches would be a good effort

True, but since drawing 13,768 (2013), 13,284 (2012*), 13,004 (2009) and 16,654 (2007) they’ve never dropped below 22,000.

I think this game could surprise and outdraw the Tigers Marvel game.

The Dees probably aren’t going to draw much less than they did against the Suns, and the Dockers are a bigger draw in Melbourne. And Easter Saturday is okay for crowds (it’s the Sunday that’s the issue)

*Marvel game - which should never happen under any circumstances for Melbourne home games (their Docklands crowds are way lower than any other MCG co-tenant)

And can you blame the Melbourne fan base for not showing up now? It will be the die hards for the rest of the season until potato coach is sacked.

We are the most boring team to watch in the league by far.
Watching on the TV last night, I was thinking ep12 will be there and showing his support to the Mighty dees like a true die hard. Same cannot be said of the other regular goers plus the casual fan whom would be disengaged. Unfortunately, we will definitely see next weekend impacted but even the two marquee games (ANZAC Eve & Kings Birthday) could be impacted with Melbourne's poor form.
Melbourne v Richmond could be at best mid 50s if Dees lose next weekend.

I get the Dees game is at the G, but playing Richmond at their home game is the difference between a 30,000 odd and a sub 20,000 crowd at Marvel for this one.

Surely you could turn around a stadium at 20% capacity in 2-3 hours.

AO did it yesterday.

I will be curious about what Sunday Night during Easter will bring. It would be cool if the Dogs could make something of it and make it a dedicated timeslot vs someone.

I think Easter Sunday Night could be better than during the day on Saturday or Sunday. I know a few Dog people going with the Holiday the next day.

But I do feel like Essendon and Carlton may have tried this before and didn’t work (or was that just Sunday Night in general?)

My recollection of Easter is this.

Good Friday obviously a winner. ✅
Easter Saturday afternoon has also been a really good performer over the years. ✅
Easter Sunday night unlikely to be strong, a holy day of family activity. Yes, once morning and lunch done could mean Sunday night is an option but I think it’s more a risk. 🫤 👍 or 👎?
Easter Monday a winner. ✅

Pretty much, fan base is as angry as I’ve ever seen it. Demonland a grim place to go reading now.

Sell 27 and 28 to w.a, then back to s.a for 2 years.

I think a set up where s.a gets it roughly every second year would be fair. I really wanna see Perth put on a show for the event though, would be cool and a great celebration of w.a footy culture, like s.a has gotten the past few years.

The s.a premier has helped make this event what it is, the only problem is the w.a premier is a rugby/ league shill, so I dunno if he'd put in as much effort.

In WA, it would be Rita Saffioti pushing it.

Big Dockers fan. Is currently the Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Sports Minister. She has taken on Sports and hand balled Toursim after the last election.

As the Tourism Minister she secured a lot of sporting events as tourism attractions, such as WWE, Rugby League State of Origin, Bledisloe Cup games, NRL Double Headers, Women’s Soccer World Cup, Matilda’s and Socceroos games, etc.

Why so many empty seats at the Barossa and AO? I thought they were sellouts?
Neither AO game on Saturday sold out.

It was stinking hot on Saturday and apparently Sunday as well, I knew people who had tickets to certain games and didn't show up because it was too hot.

I was literally saying to a Lions friend that I wouldn't have gone to Carlton v West Coast even if I got a free ticket for it (and the only reason why I went to Melbourne v Essendon was because I got free tickets).

Going forward AFL should just have every game at Adelaide Oval, our game deserved a bigger crowd than either Saturday AO games.

Dunno about every game being at AO. Part of the attraction for travelers is getting to settings around wine country and the "country charm" factor of the smaller grounds.
