The points you make are exactly why I chose 'premierships won' as the metric, over all of those individual accolades. A team that's finished last, is the furthest away from a premiership, and in possession of pick 1, should be trying to build a premiership-winning list, not focusing on who will get the most Brownlow votes or All Australians.
One player cannot win a premiership alone, so why go all in on one player?
I don't have a problem with splitting a pick to get more picks but nor do I think it is necessarily the best option. The players you get with your pick 19 and 37 (or whatever they become) can be pretty good too. (E.g. the Warner brothers, Parker, Hannebery and Goodes all taken with picks close to pick 40).
I do think that looking at an 18 year old kid to win you a premiership (or even 3 18 year old kids) is a bit optimistic. And I particularly don't get why you would be comparing the number of premierships won by players selected at different picks is a useful metric.
