Smillie was #1 this time last year.
Yeah long way to go.

Nice to see 2 of top 10 prospects lay down a pretty good marker though in game 1. Better than them all spudding it up like they don't wanna be Tigers 😁

No way I'm taking a ruck top 3 pick, let alone pick 1.

If this guy is more than just a ruck that's fine, but you don't spend that draft collateral for the purposes of getting a number 1 ruck.
Genuine question, why not?

If the best prospect is a ruckman it would be logical to select them there!

I think this highlights is there a need at all to draft a ruckman or is it better to trade/FA to get one.

In saying that CDT would come in and transform our midfield. He's giving me TDK vibes.

You let other dumb clubs draft them and develop them and they take the injury/development risk on these big gangly young kids getting smashed into on a weekly basis by men.

Whatever rucks come out the other side of it and prove themselves then at that point you trade for them or pick them up in FA. Or you take a flyer on one with traits with later picks/rookie draft

Top 10 rucks for possessions this year

IMG_3771.png

Tdk - pick 30
Gawn - 34
Nank - 35
Meek - 69
Marshall - rookie
Xerri - pick 72
Witts - rookie
Cameron - 48
McInerney - rookie
Sweet - Rookie
Flynn - 41

So only Jackson was a top 3 pick and English a late first.

The development of rucks is slow and difficult to predict. On top of that a top of the line mid with average ruck is much better prospect to top ruck and average mid imo.

i understand rucks historically don't need to be high picks, but i'm not against cdt purely because if he's best pick available, i would like to watch a genuinely talented ruck who knows how to get the ball and use it run around for us after watching our projects of colina & OHB for the past 5 years

like imagine in 2-3 years when nank is at the end and we trade for a ruck who isn't getting a game like what we did with nankervis, but it doesn't work out this time, and now we're stuck with a spud ruck for 3 years while we desperately try to replace him with other spuds

or we could get lucky and get a rookie pick ruck who is great, luck of the draw, who knows

but cdt rotating with sims would be gr8 to watch in the future

Good point. Doesn't change the fact that we desperately need more development options to be incubated for two years before Nankervis falls off a cliff.

All the other rucks on our list are diabolical. Ryan will not make it. Sims too early to call yet undersized for a true ruck. People forget that when contending we had Choldo to support Nank.

He'd be equally as good as a key forward with his kinda marking ability
Contested marking isnt really his strength. Whether he can be a legit KPF threat is still to be seen.

Agree. But someone has to miss out from Armstrong, Faull, Fawcett, Sims.

By drafting CDT you're essentially saying we are going to miss on 1 or 2 above as they won't ve getting regular games.
Nank has what 2-3 years left? Maybe he goes to Tassie for a year or two when they join the comp. I'm not sure about drafting a ruck at pick 1, but that would give CDT 2 years to learn and develop in the VFL, with some experience in the AFL as a 2nd ruck. Him and Sims can compete for that position, better to have options. When Nank moves on, CDT becomes the #1 ruck with Sims as 2nd ruck/forward.

Armstrong CHF and one of Faull or Fawcett (early days but I don't see it with Fawcett) at FF.

Plus who knows what happens with injuries and you can always trade a tall if they've shown a bit and aren't getting enough opportunities.

I think you draft your project Ruckman in the 20's/30's.

Those top picks going forward should be exclusively for midfielders/HBF's and small forwards.

Like the sound of Duursma but I can't cop X so it does taint him a bit.

A strong first outing for Onley here, best on for his Bushrangers team in a losing effort. His size, power and clean hands at stoppage proved extremely difficult for Gippsland to handle as Onley won a stack of clearances and helped initiate forward moves. His aerial prowess and reading of the play are a real weapon. The major concern for Onley is his disposal by foot, which wasn't great again here but he gets a pass due to the wild and windy conditions.

In the marquee matchup of the weekend, Cooper Duff-Tytler got the better of Louis Emmett and played a huge role in helping his Cannons team get up on the day. He didn't always have his own way in the hitout battle, but his follow up work at ground level and on the spread was elite for a 200cm lad. Given his relatively recent full time commitment to footy we might only be scratching the surface of what he's capable of.

umpire goes arse over with an innocuous tumble and goes full gary lyon LOL i say we draft CDT based on that piece of footage alone

What are your thoughts on comparison to Darcy at the Dogs? I haven't seen that contested marking ability as yet but early days as you said.
