USA 2024 US Presidential Election: Trump vs Harris (pt II)

If I was to guess, I'd say the percentage would be much higher here if voting was no longer compulsory. Our apathy for politics would see voting at under 50%.
We have no way of knowing, since we do have compulsory voting.

Far more than the inevitable high turnout, however, the most important consequence of compulsory voting is the obligation it places on the election apparatus to make it easy to vote. So we see none of the deliberate suppression of voters that happens in the USA.

None of us is actually obliged to use our voice. We can spoil the ballot paper, or cop a small fine. But no-one can take it away from us, or make it hard to use.

If only they had compulsory voting ,And voting on a Saturday but that will never happen.
Maybe, would be a sea change for the populace. Saturdays in the fall mean college football. Hmmm would have to have polling station at or near the stadiums or campuses :winkv1:

But the Republicans would never allow it.

It makes sense. I get it from the Australia POV. Labor is so utterly compromised now it literally makes no difference which of the major parties gets elected, everyone except the wealthy gets screwed now.
Trump is not the answer but the question is valid, how do we make politics work for working class again?

We just wait for everywhere to become autocratic dictators then maybe if the population is so pissed off then something will change.

So basically, nothing until total collapse.

It’s a bit of a catch-22. Those who suffer most at the hands of the dreadful neoliberalism establishment that we’ve found ourselves in either can’t, or won’t, engage sufficiently with what’s going on and so are increasingly persuaded by right wing populists who offer scapegoats as a diversion while they continue to tilt the system against those most taken advantage of. Parties that purport to being more progressive need to appeal to an increasingly broad church of the less downtrodden with a conscience, but have to water down their policies to retain enough support at the polling stations to stand a chance of gaining even some government power. And many of their key actors aren’t really committed to breaking the system, but rather just tinker around the edges, and cease to challenge the narrative that props up the corrupt economic system.

A truly progressive (economically, rather than socially) movement can’t emerge until those who would most benefit from it realise what is really wrong with the current system and stop accepting the false scapegoats that are handed to them.

I’m not advocating pure socialism. I think humans are, by nature, too individualistic. The only times and places it has been tried have quickly become inefficient autocracies indistinguishable from fascist regimes. Just a very different version of capitalism than the one we have now.

Surely new deal style agendas like FDR’s and the post war consensus of the social welfare state and taxing the rich heavily is still doable. So you can do tangible big things without going full on socialism. It’s just the major parties in most western countries don’t want to do anything to upset their big money donors.

Dems were always pushing shit uphill in this election though just on post-covid economy which was unavoidable. Economy was the consistent number one issue with voters in polling all the way through.
Just wait until they discover that Trump isn't doing anything to improve it.

Oh deary me…says everything about you we already knew!🤦🤓
Look who's on the bongs again.
If its such a sinple answer why not explain it? Nearl every state has managed it why cant California.

Trump has won comfortably and that is undeniable. Seems trying to up Harris's populwrar vote is just a losers flex.

I'd say it's for completeness to finish the count and Cali needs to up their game to count quicker.

If Trump won, what does it matter anyways?

Let me get this straight :tearsofjoy:

You are the one somehow complaining that all votes are being counted, apparently because Trump's popular vote lead is shrinking, but it's the left who are trying for a flex?

Said it before but you can't be real, you just can't be :tearsofjoy:
