Game Day 2024 Trade Period - Lian Yu - that liminal space between trade and draft.

Don't think we've opened enough list spots for this draft in the end
Freo have 4 senior list spots. 1 rookie. 1 cat B open. Will be using 3 picks at the ND, Max Knobel in the RD + Quinton Narkle through either the RD or SSP, and then Ultan Kelm? for the open Cat B slot. I think Worner is getting upgraded, as I believe he has to upgraded because 2024 was his 3rd year on the rookie list.

Not sure the draft is so good that Pick 70-odd is going to add much to our list. Having said that I don't think anyone else is drafting Carr so the pick number for the fourth selection is irrelevant anyway.
We have futures that would easily get us into 50s

We have done some of our best work around that range

Looks like the dream scenario to me. Choose whoever we want from the small forward pool outside Kako. Then take Davis if we think his kicking is OK, or we can go with Oliver/Clarke (in both of whom it sounds we have strong interest) if we prefer a running defender.
I like our second pick options. Sure I'd prefer Davis, and the HBF-ers you mentioned. I'd add Hynes, Gerreyn and Ough as potentials

I count 32 primary list players, six rookies (this is after Knobel is picked up again), one cat-b rookie.

We have to have at least 36 on the primary list, 44 max on the primary and cat A rookie lists.

Either:
4 national draft picks + 2 rookies = 32+4+6+2=44
5 national draft picks + 1 rookie = 32+5+6+1=44

Given Narkle is going to be a SSP listing, then I don't think we factor in no rookie spots.

#14, #30, #67 and #87 plus two rookies (one of which will be left over for Narkle).

Where is my maths wrong?

It is 42 for primary plus cat A, not 44.

Do Cat B rookies count in the maximum total of 44 players on the total list?

Max no. of cat-a rookies is where you’re a little out.

Current rookies:
Reidy, Voss, Sharp, Jones, Worner (5)

Knobel to be added makes 6.

Worner served his max 3 years on rookie list (2022,2023,2024). So under contract he is upgraded to primary list.

That opens up spot for SSP rookie Narkle.

Means we will have just 3 selections in ND. Confirmed by Brierty and also indicated by Twomey.

Ryan Daniels said we are considering Jaren Carr for our third and final pick. I think our pick 67 will come back to the 50’s and much better options available. My opinion only is that we will consider upgrading one or both our 2nd and 3rd picks using the 3rd rounders we have.

I reckon we might ask Jaren to come train with us in PS. Injury replacement SSP or mid season draft consideration.

From memory the AFL changed the SSP training rules last year so only two players could train per available list spot.

Zero list spots would mean zero potential SSP players could train with us.

32 main list
6 rookies
4 senior, 1 rookie, 1 cat B spaces to fill
32/5/1 = 38
Upgrading Worner makes it 33 senior, so 3 open slots, 2 rookie slots, 1 cat B slot
36/6/2 = 44

14, 30 for whoever
67 Jaren Carr
87 upgraded Worner
1st rookie pick Knobel
2nd rookie pick or SSP for Narkle
Cat B slot for Ultan Kelm or whatever

Delean is an obivious weak link, can be a bit flashy but in reality beloe Emmet who was delisted

Just rewatched the kelm highlights. If this guy can kick a sherrin not just a round ball, he could make a big difference. Major afterburners, great vision and ferocious tackling… when do we know?

And what position do you reckon he could best play?

I haven't got the exact dates for this year (the AFL makes them harder to find each year) but the deadline for overseas rookies is usually independent of other list lodgement dates. I think the cut off date might've even been after the draft in previous years.

He'd probably be groomed for rebounding defender like most of the Irish guys.

He has been practising with the ball for a few years now and I know the club were pleasantly surprised at his ball handling and kicking skills.

I would have thought an attacking half back would suit but would expect he would spend a fair amount of time adjusting at Peel if we pull the trigger.

He would be an interesting get because he has serious wheels and is physically very strong.

Geelong have announced they have a new Irish recruit a week ago.

If we are actually serious he should be here for the start of pre-season.

He'll probably join our 3 other depth HBF-ers for now. That number could change if we grab Allen and/or Travaglia.

Seems ideal on the wing to me with his natural attacking/defensive balance, and fantastic jets.

Kelm for open wing position? Or competing with worner for hbf?
He needs to play some WAFL before we make any comments. Personally I’ve never seen him kick an Aussie rules ball and I certainly haven’t seen him play a game of Aussie Rules. He’ll likely start in the WAFL reserves and progress from there.
