Just looking at Cal's late mail phantom... In both editions he had St Kilda taking a player, then bidding, then taking another player. Why wouldn't they do their bids on their first pick and make these teams pay the maximum?

Agree. They've got picks 7 & 8 so it wouldn’t make any difference to them to suck a few extra points out of an opponent. They’ll get who they want anyway and if they’re bidding on anyone with those picks it’ll be someone they’d be prepared to list anyway.

GC and Essendon will have enough points to match at that point and an earlier bid won't move the Saints 4th pick any higher.

All it will do is shift around the picks at the end of the draft a little bit and slightly adjust which teams get the late blokes who go on to succeed.

It doesn't take any value out of the back end of the draft when a team has to pay an extra late pick to match. The same players are still available and the other picks - not owned by the Saints - become slightly more valuable

There's no tactical reason for the Saints to do it.

With the discount, Pick 8 and the bombers can match with picks 28 and 31 with a pick in the 70’s coming back. Pick 7 and their pick 40 gets shuffled down the order to about 45 or 46 without a late pick coming back. Might even be enough to push it behind the Saints pick 47.

Pick 8 and GC have enough points to match and get a pick around 73 or 74 back. Pick 7 and they go into deficit in 2025 without trading in more points. That’ll impact them in 2025 when they’ll no doubt have more academy players coming through.

Much of that will depend on where Brisbane have to match a bid though. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
