I guess it all comes back to what value we put on a trade as well.

I don’t want to be using to many trades trading sideways or for a 5-10 pt upgrade from someone going 90 to a 95. I’d rather just start that 95 player and save using that trade where I can instead focus on upgrading as many rookies/mid pricers as possible.

It will be interesting to see how this year plays out. Seeing many here mention they plan to trade out player x, y and z at round 2,3,4 etc because of the byes and sideways trade. I think many will find that a lot more difficult than it sounds when you account for injuries and form etc. Same principle applies I think to the idea of needing someone at some point, I’d rather just start him (been burnt before by this) but agree it will be close but I still see him the number 1 forward.

Agree you want value in your starting lineup but IMO not everyone needs to be a value pick when your lineup needs decent stability as well.
I'm with you, trades are more valuable as the season rolls on as well - even when we have the luxury of three. What and how we select early on affects the subsequent trades we have to make! Sometimes it is just old fashioned bad luck too.

Personally (but I’ll admit Macrae has always been selected in my first team so I have a soft spot for him) I find it odd not to start him as a forward.

Limited options, only priced at 92 and I think he’s basically a guarantee to be the top scoring forward given the options this year outside of Flanders perhaps.

Think he’s being judged very harshly as we are used to expecting 115+ from him. All he needs is to go 95+ and he’s got F1 locked up.
Plus there’s limited risk picking him as he’s so highly owned.

Went through the forwards and put some predicted averages next to a few players to see who was value.

One that popped up and surprised me a bit was Ben Keays. Priced at 77 and I have him possibly going anywhere from 82-93, so possibly 10 points unders. I guess it probably depends on whether Crouch plays (because Crouch can only play in the one position). As a full time mid he's a 105 player, and he's obviously not going to be a full time mid.

Connor MacDonald 3rd year breakout? Averaged 70 last season, 81 in his last 8, big junior numbers. Forward line seems a good line to take this sort of punt
I like him for his value but I wonder how much value he actually has in him. Both him and Ward look set for big years, third year breakout etc. But realistically how many extra points are there to go around in that hawks midfield? Thats where I keep getting stuck on them. Both good picks in their own right but would need an injury or two to really open up a solid spot for them. I feel like at this stage, Ward stays mainly wing with stints on-ball, and MacDonald stays mainly HFF with stints through the middle or on the wing.

Could Madonald do a Flanders and score without the CBA’s?

Just think the forward line is the perfect line to take that sort of risk. Best case he goes 90 and you’ve got a premium forward, worst case he goes 75 and just flick him to someone else around his price

Also. Duno about Adam’s tbh. Role might be ok. But geez his body is a big issue and early bye

Yeah Adams body scares me. Definitely have Macdonald as a huge watch this preseason. Like you said, the forward line this year is the perfect place to go for someone like that. I'm considering a 0 premium forward line to start!

Got him, as I just can't find anyone else at $638k with the good bye (has Rd 15 bye) so can either hold or upgrade after we see what fwds look good, and two lots of DPP additions by then

McDonald is expecting more mid time.
Yeah but who comes out to give him that time? I’d imagine Ward is ahead of him in the pecking order for more mid time. Wonder if they let Newc spend more time forward as he showed back end of last year that he could be damaging forward

Blackhawk42 what say you?

Anyone with a view on E Hewitt

Still not in full training due to a foot injury. Watch this space. Us eagles fans have high hopes for him but might be a year early and preseason niggles always put me off. Great keeper league option though as you can likely get him very late

Thank you - he's in my squad and was unaware of the prevailing foot issue. He is one of those players, like Wardlaw, that easily passed the eye test and no matter the stats, you just know he will ascend to premo status one day.

We are loaded for young mids. If Croc (yes that's his nickname) was guaranteed to be getting more minutes (like Ward likely is) then he'd be a lock for me in a season where the forward line is a tough one.

Currently he's doing a really solid job as a high half forward so I can't imagine, with Ward, Newk, Day, Worpel, Mackenzie and Nash already rotating through the middle, that Sam Mitchell will be trying to rush him into the midfield rotations for long stretches unfortunately.

I'm currently running with Harmes at F2 (Daniel is also a consideration) because of Bazlenka's injury. I posted the below table in the ruck thread and their CBA's stood out to me, obviously the CBA's increased (and Fantasy scoring) when a mid higher up the pecking order went down. So I think I'll pass on Harmes/Daniel unless that happens, when it does then it'll be a good move to bring them in.

Yeah, thought the same and had him in my first created team. has since been left out, but definitely a watch for his role, especially with players in and out.

Probably going to be either M.Crouch in my team (if he's in the side, as he really has no other possible role than in the middle) or Keays (if M.Crouch isn't in the side).
