FYI

Will add a 2024 NAB Draft & Trade tracker thread, stickied.

Tag me when we have a confirmed trade/draft and I will update the thread accordingly

I'd be taking as many kids as possible right now and allowing them the year to develop in the VFL.

Looking ahead to 2026, we'll be expected to have a significant list turnover again.

I wouldn't expect any of JJ, Duryea, Scott, Baker or Cleary to be on the list in 2026. That's not including any possible trade requests either or unexpected retirements (Jones, Libba etc.).

Cal Twomey and Riley Beveridge reviewed 3 teams in particular... Richmond (of course), Saints and the dogs. Riley noted our team took 60 seconds to make our picks so we knew what we wanted and were so precise with our movements.

Said it is a nice haul

you would hope so since we traded up/into a few picks. Apart from Hynes, I dont get the feeling that we were just taking 'whoever was best available left at our pick'

We had our targets and we went for them.

If a few of those lads from round 2 or later turn out to be guns its a huge tick for our talent identification.

Looks like Essendon had their first rounder on the table for Shanahan. I find it fascinating we passed on that.
Clubs really must not have rate next years crop of draftees.

I do find it a little disappointing that we didn't take the deal if it was on offer. There was also the possibility that some of the kids we drafted could've picked up a little later that we could have possibly traded in for later on (like we did with Davidson & Kennedy).

It's Essendon. They probably wanted two firsts going back

Three forwards in our draft haul.
First one was probably just a best available pick but the next two (Dolan and Davidson) are surely needs picks. Dolan and Hynes probably won’t get a game before mid season but Davidson as a 23yo is a decent chance.

VDM and McNeil should be getting nervous. Apart from Garcia there wasn’t much else to choose from last year. They will need to go to another level or spend some time in the VFL.

And I wonder if we’re thinking more midfield time for West and Weightman?
There has to be some sort of plan, before going into the draft we traded 2 mids and a HB/Mid in Celeb. The Draft was midfield heavy.
We needed an injection of speed in the guts and wing, along with ready replacements for Libba/Trealor and young blood for The Bont.
Some speed was addressed in Jacques/Dolan, but we drafted 2 medium Fwds, 1 small fwd, and 1 small back(likely Dureya replacement.

Its a bit of a head scratcher.

Every good draft prospect I’m hearing about so far are all academy prospects

I mean a lot can change but it’s not really great signs so far

I think we see Hynes as a midfielder going forward, and Davidson as a ready to go wing/HHF with pace.

Good morning fellow bulldogs.
After feeling a little flat after night 1 , not because Hynes is not a good prospect, he is, but not addressing the very obvious holes in our list, very pleased with the balance we now have.
Everyone knows we badly need runners with some speed , and with good foot skills.

Considering we were locked out of those players at the top of the draft, I couldn’t be happier with what Sam and the team have identified.
All 4 have great attributes that give us more speed and coverage.

Particularly like the Dolan pick. Gives really great vibes.
He could be the steal !

If the offer was the same as what was posted here (37, 39 and F2 for 29 and F3) I find it hard to believe that we wouldn't have been able to pick up the players we wanted with Essendon's picks. We still would have coughed up a future 3rd but we would have had Essendon's nice juicy future 2nd to take into next year.

Every player drafted between 29 and 37 was a tall excluding our guys and Ough (194cm anyway) who was drafted to GWS. Would GWS have taken Jacques after picking up Oliver? Or Dolan after grabbing Hannaford and Angove?

29. Western Bulldogs - Lachie Jaques (medium defender, Geelong Falcons/St Mary’s)
30. West Coast Eagles - Jobe Shanahan (tall forward, Bendigo Pioneers/Moama)
31. Western Bulldogs - Josh Dolan (small forward/midfielder, Sandringham Dragons/Beaumaris)
32. St Kilda - James Barrat (tall utility, Bendigo Pioneers/Leitchville Gunbower)
33. Port Adelaide - Jack Whitlock (tall forward/ruck, Murray Bushrangers/Shepparton)
34. Fremantle - Charlie Nicholls (tall utility, Central District/Min-Man)
35. Hawthorn - Noah Mraz (tall defender, Dandenong Stingrays/Noble Park)
36. GWS Giants - Jack Ough (wing/midfielder, GWV Rebels/Wentworth)
37. Essendon - Kayle Gerreyn (tall forward/ruck, West Perth/Joondalup Kinross)
38. Port Adelaide - Christian Moraes (utility, Eastern Ranges/Knox)
39. Essendon - Angus Clarke (medium defender, Glenelg/East Gambier)
40. Carlton - Harry O’Farrell (tall defender, Calder Cannons/Maribyrnong Park)

Obviously there's no real way of knowing if all these talls would still have been prioritised but it seems like it would have been worth the gamble.

Clubs draft for attributes rather than position. Every chance we see these guys playing in different positions to where they have played as juniors.

This draft is make or break for Dom Milesi. In a couple of years we will know if he good at his job or not.

It's very interesting how he didn't have to do a heap of work in his early years due to JUH & Darcy.

2020 - JUH, Bedendo & McNeil
2021 - Darcy, Cleary, Parker & McComb
2022 - Busslinger, Clarke & Gallagher
2023 - Sanders, Croft, Freijah, Smith & O'Driscoll

Very mixed results given JUH & Darcy don't count.

Bedendo, Cleary, Parker, McComb & Clarke are already failed picks.

Freijah, Gallagher & McNeil are positive selections (given their relative draft positions) and the rest are too early to tell. Other than Freijah, there have been no 'hits'.
