Haven't been confident Stubblety-Cook will defend his 200m Breaststroke Olympic title and even less so after US swimmer Matt Fallon at day 5 finas has just gone to #1 rank and pushed Zac to #6 in the qualifying period. Zac swam 2.07.40 at the trials.

USA trials have just finished Day 5 of 9 and they follow the Paris schedule other than relays, so thought I'd put up the events by finals and day.

Green = Oz favourite to win taking into account rankings, performance and past big meet experience
Blue = USA ditto
Black = Other nations ditto. Tried to say which nation, a few I have split.

Day 1 heats our time 27th - Finals start 4.30am AEST 28th
M 400m Free (GER),
W 400m Free
M 4x100n Free, W 4x100m Free

Day 2 28th/29th
M 400m IM (FRA), M 100m Brst (GBR),
W 100m Fly,

Day 3 29th/30th
M 200m Free (GER), M 100m Back (ITA or CHN),
W 400m IM (CAN), W 100m Brst (CHN or RSA), W 200m Free

Day 4 30th/31st
M 800m Free (IRL),
W 100m Back

M 4x200m Free (GBR),

Day 5 31st/1st Aug
M 100m Free (CHN) M 200m Fly (JAP),
M200m Brst,
W 100m Free
W 1500m Free

So after day 5 and 20 events, with 4 days and 15 events to come, I have it
USA 5, AUS 4, GBR 2, GER 2, FRA 1, CAN 1, IRL 1, JAP 1, and CHN 1 + 2 x 0.5 RSA 0.5 ITA 0.5

Just my opinion, don't take it too seriously. Favourites/top ranked don't always win at the Olympics and world champs.

It will great to get your update on this at the end of day 9 Russell.

I will also do a list for just days 6 to 9 rather than the full list.

This period will be harder as a lot of swimmers will be doing their 3rd, 4th or 5th individual event. I suspect the US will kick ahead in Paris during this period as they don't have as many swimmers who are doing a large load of individual events. Then add on relays and some swimmers are doing as many as 7 or 8 events.

I agree with you 100%.

Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis has worked well for the US trials. Might not use all 52,000 seats but can be configured in a way so that 30,000 people can attend and get a decent view.

But the big issue is that you have to also build a warm up/down pool for any international event. The Sydney Olympic Aquatics Centre can no longer be used for a big international event, as they have got rid of the 2nd pool and have concreted it in and converted it to a learn to swim pool for young kids and its only 80-90cms deep.

According to Sports Illustrated they put in a warm up/down pool at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Other competitor-friendly implementations that are new here:
* A warmup-warmdown pool that is closer to the competition pool (just on the other side of a massive curtain down the center of the stadium) and also considerably larger than in Omaha. There are 10 50-meter lanes and seven more 25-yard lanes, which should alleviate the crowding that became a pet peeve in recent years. (More than a few younger Trials qualifiers would try to make a point of getting in the same lane as, say, Ledecky during warmups, just to be that close to greatness.)

But they then can't have the opening ceremony there and would need a roof. Can use some sort of canvas temporary roof like they have at BC place in Vancouver and used to have in Minneapolis NFL stadium for years before they built the glass roofed US Bank Stadium about a decade ago.

That might mean a new stadium in Victoria Park gets a gig, or maybe QSAC is going to be 60k and not 40k.

Anyway here is the link for the article using Web Archive to get around the paywall. Read it, it looks like a, hey lets do what the yanks did, thought bubble at the moment.
