What a delight watching defenders who know how to defend first and foremost. A wise old Carlton man told me many moons ago defences win premierships, still hold true today. Well done to the Lions, a flag from 5th. And as for me labelling them mental pigmies a few months ago, shows how much I know.🙄
There defensive trap has been a work in progress for years & they have the system nailed.

Everyone & I mean everyone knows what they need to do.
Big guys kill it or mark it, mids & small forwards put a heap of pressure running just as hard to get it back or apply pressure & create overlap to move it forward - it’s bloody impressive

The Brisbane Lions had a really impressive finals series, so much run, confidence and power, having good ball uses off half back, having pace, power and height in the forward line and players who are hard at the ball and opponent is great to watch.

I dont see our team and list being that far off compared to the two teams out there today, one or two players in areas of need and things change all over the field.
It's not the list that's the problem it's the footy department.

Congratulations Lions, an amazing game of footy it had it all, grit , skill and speed in all areas of the ground.
Wining a Premiership form 5th position is incredulous.
A true watershed season for the club and Fagen, they’ll be a force to be reckon with for the next 5 years perhaps longer.Teams self belief and confidence has firmed.
Add Coleman, Doedee, Gardiner, McCarthy and Levi Ashcroft, Marshall via draft 2024. It’s a little scary.

I'd like to focus on the intercept marks by each team's defenders and clean ball use going into the forward line.

Intercept marks by defenders:

Starcevich 5
Andrews 4
Wilmot 2
Payne 2
Lester 1
Answerth 1
Total 15

Blakey 3
Melican 1
Lloyd 1
Cunningham 1
Total 6

Inside 50s were 51-49 Lions way, which was basically equal. Now all those intercept marks might not have been inside their D50, however for arguments' sake let's say they were.

15 out of 49 Swans entry into 50 were halted by an opposition mark. Which is 31%.

On the other hand, 6 out of 51, is 12%.

Shows how important it is that the forward line can at the very least bring the ball to ground AND also the importance clean ball entry into the forward line.

Marks inside 50:
Lions 22
Swans 9

They know when to work the ball around with uncontested marks…shifting the opposition defence around and when they see someone free in the corridor they hit the kick perfectly

It’s very fun brand to watch

Starcevich was immense in this regard. He served as a roadblock for many of Sydney’s attempts going forward and thought he was very pivotal in setting up that significant half time lead as a result

The intercept marking of Brisbane is a great highlight of work done up the ground and the pressure the lions forwards and mids placed on Sydney.

So many times Sydney just binned and the Lions picked them off.

I can’t believe BT is the best Channel 7 could do on GF day. 😂

1 minute and 25 seconds into Quarter 3, no one had kicked even a behind and Brisbane’s players spent the first minute of the quarter kicking it around to each other: “This is good, I’m liking the first couple of minutes here from Sydney. Every goal they can kick sews the seed of doubt into the Brisbane mind.”

1 minute and 50 seconds into the quarter (25 seconds later) and the quarter was still scoreless: “Sydney must not allow Brisbane to kick early goals here.”

Even a first time AFL watcher yesterday would have been ‘what the ****ing’. Do commentators have a script in front of them and read off it? I wouldn’t be surprised.

Just before half-time, as McLean sprayed a kick from 20 out, BT declared him "Sydney's best player", with all of 2 possessions.

… Although that one was probably accurate. :p

Bingo!!!

We need more heat further up the ground, the mix of our best backline is not the problem it’s actually a very good strength when the ball is coming in under pressure

Don't get me wrong lions were really good but how much of it was swans allowing them to play as they wished...?

that was not the typical swans performance we saw throughout this season...

When we played lions a few weeks back we at least provided a contest when TDK came on...I reckon if we had Cincotta we would have performed even better...not saying we would have won but we would have pushed them imo.

Swans and the MCG don’t mix…

Lions spread them at every chance and it broke down their press…

The Lions small/mid forwards are MUCH bette than ours and tore them apart…

Yeah its like chalk and cheese...

I'm not sure how we ended up with such a poor small forward mix...

why did this part of our list get so neglected?

They’d need to get the G thing fixed asap. This will scar them for awhile. Its great being the best home and away side but if you don’t go on in finals it’s over.

I just don't think we weighted their importance enough and didn't find one that ticked all the boxes. Back to the drawing board.

It’s why we have to keep pick 11 in this years draft, there are a couple that fit nicely into the range we’ll be drafting in.

Only real small forward we’ve got is Motlop, forget this year his season was destroyed by the HPT, he’s a good young footballer.

Little Durds is a mid, so is Fog and Owies is not a small forward type.

And Williams can play there to a level that’s better offensively than any of them but can’t stay on the park
