Lloyd on Footy Classified thinks we had a drinking culture where players were heckled for not getting involved that has ended since David Misson and RTB arrived.
I dunno if they were ever heckled but if you ever went to st Kilda on a sat night you were bound to see a saints player. Dunstan acres gresh steele Marshall to name a few. Lots of party boys

Yeah, clearly gringo2011 ‘s great mate Lukey was a big driver of this pisshead culture, along with his goatish bestie, and both had to be booted to allow those other young fellas you mentioned to flourish 😬

Jack Steele alluded to RTB setting him straight with his somewhat sluggish performances in the preseason matches in an abc interview immediately following the Fremantle match. Checking in whether he was personally doing all the small things away from the club to get the best out of himself. RTB has his finger on the pulse and with his trusted lieutenants has been reprogramming their mindsets to a desired more professional standard than they’ve experienced before.

Few weeks ago it felt like 99% of the football “media” tipped us to be bottom 4, except Tim Watson.

Going into round 4, we’re top of the ladder. Doesn’t mean much with 20 rounds to go, BUT, the one constant which continues to be proved time and time again is that football media know very little and their predictions are nearly always wrong / sensationalist / capitalist & clicks driven yada yada.

Most “journalist / presenters” are condescending depending on what side of the fence u sit on teams wise, in effect that’s their trade unless there is any real news floating around.
The thing I worry about now is the media are building us up this week, making everything seem peachy and amazing. You just know in 3 weeks if we drop a couple of games they'll be right back to hanging shit on us. Nothing surer. And even if we are 3-3 all of us would have taken that in a heartbeat! But it only takes 2-3 losses in a row for the vultures to start circling again!

This is just general AFL media. They’re right back on the dogs after beating Lions, I personally think they still look ordinary but their opinions on teams change like the Melbourne weather, they need content

I particularly like the bit where David Misson spoke about getting the players off the piss 👍🏻

what a ******* slap in the face to the club and the players, suburban footballers wtaf, these scrubs can write any old s**t cant they
I'm not sure why you have a problem with the writer saying that some of the players he's had to bring into the injury depleted side have been from suburban leagues. Sure, he's probably just referring to one player (Caminiti), but it's hardly a slight on the club.

Overall, it's probably the most positive and fairest article about us I've ever read in The Guardian.

To be honest, it's really disappointing that professional athletes still have a booze culture, really old school, and just amateur stuff in 2023. They ask us fans for dedication, support, and commitment, yet our own players act like its the nineties.

I'm not surprised that Ratts didn't stomp it out; I'm not saying he has a drinking problem because how would I know, but his rosy visage certainly speaks of a dude with one.

In comes a coach with enough gravitas that he doesn't have to try and be best mates with the players and shuts that loser shit in a hot second.

Totally agree with you.

The theme of the article is that RTB has turned the ship around despite serious injury challenges and made us relevant again. Would have thought that was pretty accurate and balanced (unlike a lot of garbage that is written).

Lyon on OTC just did the same thing

'Oh its only round 3'
'They are playing the same as last year'
'The injuries are overblown'
'They were 8-3 last year'

These Kent's just hate it when we go well.

Playing like last year, FMD he doesn't even read their own stats, 17th in long kicks into the 50, and 18 with corridor play, 1st to play on. Nothing like the shambles of last year.

On SM-S908E using BigFooty.com mobile app

Saw that and shook my head. Both Brown and Lyon completely clueless and talking absolute drivel.

Says more about Ratts, really.
Very interesting - take this for what it’s worth, but the son of a friend of mine is mates with a current reasonably experienced player who said after games last season they got on the beers and up to other antics (not drugs) - didn’t care about a win or a loss as long as they got a kick.

Seems to line up unfortunately so I wouldn’t necessarily dismiss Lloyd on this.

Kane Cornes must be reading David Kings book on being a sports commentator.

Low fruit only for these experts. LOLZ

I’m not saying it’s 100% rubbish.

But I have never heard of the issue being players getting in the drink.

The issue especially in the last 2 years. Has been how poor of a high performance environment Moorabbin has been. Which has been evident in the lack of development and the change we are seeing so far.

So, by that - I am referring to how hard players train. I am referring to selection integrity. I am referring to clarity on role and instruction etc.

I think the club encouraged this best mates with the coach mantra.

The video of the club presenting Ratten with a brand new cushy contract and getting all the players to shake his hand and do cheers for him really exposed this attitude.

Thankfully our clubs mantra has now changed, the coach is the boss... not your best friend.

Suggests to me that Enright has played a huge role in suggesting/supporting the changes that have been made.

Hate the Cats as much as you like, you can’t deny their professionalism and continued presence at the right end of the ladder.

And of course he remains at Moorabbin and seems to have a very prominent role under RTB

the difference in the professionalism at training is enormous. Last year was just Lade and ratts joking around and practising bombing the ball on King's head. This year is all system and structure. And that's evident in the games.

I had heard similar things to what Lloyd has said but also that there was another faction in the club (led by Wilkie and not sure who else) who were very against the culture and it was leading to splits in the playing group. Wouldn’t surprise me if this was a key finding of the review.

Yeah apparently he was ruthless with his feedback.

No surprise he is the only one still around.
