Training 2023 Pre Season

A couple more things that I forgot to mention.

Peris was noticeable in multiple drills. Quick and strong.

Sharman was playing as a forward in the match sim and practicing set shots, the last drill he was training with the backs. During the match sim Howard was playing as a back but attended the fordward/mids huddle. He hurt his knee (knee driven into the ground) in the match sim but stayed out there. Didn’t participate in the last drill.

There were some pretty big tackles in that match sim. In general tackling was really good and so was our disposal while getting tackled.

One drill had a square lay out. With a goal in each corner. Two teams against each other with the object to move the ball up from one side of the square to the opposite side and score. Once the ball went in or missed. At the opposite side on the right the ball was thrown in. Forcing every player to push over. It looked taxing with a empathise on moving the ball quickly in congestion. From watching a far. It seemed players were instructed to take on the player who was trying to tackle them.

During the mini match sim, cones were placed half way between the boundary and centre square.

Paddy was chatting with Issac Keeler for a little while.

Certainly will be interesting to see how they partner up Roma in the ruck in the early games. First matchup is against Darcy & Jackson and seems like we'll have a few unavailable then unfortunately.
The answer to this and many other questions is always .....

Quote from UU above - "Paddy was chatting with Issac Keeler for a little while."

You are confusing two very different things. Ability and Fitness Level.
Not sure why you are raising Dawson? Dawson turned up fit and raring to go. No problems at all with his work ethic. He did the role that Lyon wanted him to do. Did anyone question Dawson's fitness or work ethic? = No. Did people people question his ability = sure.

Compare Cordy instead to Campbell. Campbell turned up fit and raring to go.

I did not write him off. What I have reported is that his fitness is well bellow the required level.

The reporting on Cordy, including by myself, in this the Pre-season trainig thread, is that for someone of his age (26) who has been at an AFL club for EIGHT years prior to St Kilda that his fitness level is appalling.

That Cordy being so out of condition has a 3 year deal is a concern to myself.

Can Cordy still make it? Sure, but again what I was reporting was that his fitness level right now is not at all what it should be.

The question with Cordy is why is he so unfit? Was he like that at the Dogs too? Has he just let himself go? Has he been unwell?

As you say he has played 100games, so why is he so far of the pace fitness wise?
The only point I'm making is it's probably better to judge him from an actual game than from running drills. He might be a shit runner for all we know.

It will be interesting to see if he gets a game round one and how Ross sees him, eg first team or depth.

If I was at the club, I would concerned about the amount of fit players that are available to partake in the preseason match sims. 26 players from a list of 45 means there are a sigificant number of players who are not going to have a solid fitness base leading into the season.

It highlights how many were carrying injuries at the end of last season and/or remain injury prone. Its no ideal but I guess Misson is doing his best to turn things around.

He is a big boy

The new big boy.

Can't wait for BT to bring out the Big Boy Keeler call when he gets a game.

Great to get those training reports from you btw, us WA Saints supporters don't get the chance to get down to training so they are much appreciated.:thumbsu:

He is a terrible runner & fairly limited, however he is a dour lock down type that the boss will likely utilise!

Each side had two players on the interchange.

Steele and Gresh were able to have light physical contact in the midfields drill. 8 players with green caps were doing a similar drill. No physical contact. They were pushing their bodies which was a good sign to see. All of them were able to kick the ball as well.

The drills and length of time is up on the score board. Players were either speaking with a coach, doing the drill or drinking water. The whole training session was GO.

New training expectations which most of them wouldn’t have experienced before. Has caught a few out. Plus carrying injuries from last year. From what I saw during the drills and conditioning. We are a pretty fit team and have a program that is demanding us to get fitter and better now.

The first conditioning drill that the end of the training session. Majority of all the players that trained were lined up along the center square line facing towards the far goals. There was four groups, at the other end there was four different lines across the field marked by cones. The unfit group were finishing up just inside the 50. The fittest group were finishing up about five or ten meters away from the goal square. After they took off, nick walsh would count out from 4 to 15. Every player was making the 15 second count aside from a couple of players in the unfit group. Straight into 200 meter sprints with a partner. Ever player was able to do at a good pace aside from the back of the pack. There was quiet a few players after those running drills who didn’t look completely exhausted. Some were struggling hard. I thought James Van Es was going to munt.

The training session as a whole was professional and the group had some swag about them. RTB was appoint a little over two months ago. In those months there is a clear shift in the group. Winning games is what counts but I am interested to see what what our team/culture will look like in 4 years.

Worth heading down to training if you get the chance.

Not sure Higgins' out the back goals will necessarily win votes with Ross.
His best is awesome but when he is off he is average.
I think he will be the one who flourishes the most under Ross. Poor bastard was playing forward pocket in the slowest ball movement team in the league. Think he will get much better looks with some faster ball movement

Good call and that’s what I forgot to say as well, when the ball was actually getting in there he wasn’t just good he was AA squad worthy.

Haven't seen him play in person, but would it be correct to say that Max Heath is still a long way from a debut?

Only example i have is from yesterday. He looked skilful and has the grunt to be a ruckman. Doesn’t have the strength or tank to play in the afl right now. He was struggling to cover the ground late in drills. Was up against ro in the second drill, wasn’t being pushed around but out manoeuvred because of strength and experience.

We are not worthy

My mail from a good source- Pretty much what most have been saying here already

zaine cordy hasn’t impressed the coaches at all. I’ve only read this thread today and it seems like everyone is saying the same thing. Seems like a lot of work to do before round 1?

James Van Es could be closer to senior selection than we think. Maybe a round 1 Smokey.

Matteas an exceptional talent.

It’s not much but it’s still some insight from one of coach from the club. Pretty concerning about zaine cordy tho. But it’s only jan
