Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

He's approaching DFA territory given he's Out of Contract. Doesn't mean we shouldn't add him to the list.

Think we should put Heath Chapman on the wing next year tbh. Rest of the best 6/7 defence remain and Aish spends time in defence and midfield. This would also free up midfield time for Johnson and/or Erasmus.

Sharp would be back up in case that doesn't work. Can't rely on Henry and Hughes in that role. Aish and Johnson can do time there but unlikely to stay there all game. I think we need Frederick on a HFF tbh.

Wouldn't want to guarantee Sharp too much game time but they'd be opportunities with only an injury or two.

Actually think there's a few others on that list I'd give thought to. I believe James Jordan was delisted at the end of 2020 so he might be a free agent. Probably unrealistic though.
Think the recruiting team rate him very highly in his draft year.

Any of these out of contract (and mostly fringe) players of interest?
Hateley
Matt Crouch
McAdam
Deven Robertson
Ash Johnson
Will Kelly
Kaine Baldwin
Flanders
Sharp
Riccardi
Maginness
Jai Serong
Brockman
James Jordon
Bytel
Coffield
Highmore
Amartey
Wicks
Roarke Smith
Flanders is probably the one that interests me most. Very highly regarded in his draft year. He’s a good mate of Serongs too, they played together a lot as juniors.
Was described as an explosive mid/forward. I’d get him in for a 3rd rounder no problems at all. I recall he had some family connections in Perth too if I’m not mistaken which might be an additional bonus to tempt him across.

Not sure Brockman has done anything in the past two seasons.

Anyway given our area of need - I’d consider Devan Robertson and Neddy Flanders. Ash Johnson would be handy but I’m sure the Pies will re-sign. Sharp and Flanders were highly rated in their draft years but can’t get a game with GC, so only if they can add value and at a low cost - like F3 or later.
Brockman had serious injury issues the last few years I believe and there wouldnt be many teams where you have worse time being a small forward than Hawks at the moment. Watching Hawks games, Brockman seems a talent and I'd love to bring him for the cost IMO

Getting Flanders would be a coup, he'd have some connections with Brodie as well you'd assume

Would kamdyn mcintosh be someone freo would look at to play the wing? I know he’s 29 so probably doesn’t fit the age profile. But would be free and plays the wing quite well

Not the worst as a free agent tbh, just as a big body who knows his role

I remember when Brad Hill had McIntosh keep him company on the fat side all game, barely touched it. Kamdyn is a very hard working runner. Covers about 15km a game.

Remember we were in the running for Mason Wood and everyone was melting?
Would look good now on our wing

Not so sure about that. I noticed he was playing forward quite a bit like he was starting to run out of legs. He has gone from leading his team in distance run to not being in the top five on the ground and suddenly St Kilda began to be over run.

Hard running game plans catch up with players.

Ash Johnson is quality. He is what we want out of Banfield and Sturt. Plays taller than his height, always good for a goal or two.

Would love for us to grab him.

McIntosh is better than Hughes on the wing, hard to argue with that I think. I think I'd prefer to find someone younger as we are just going to need to replace him in 2-3 years anyway.

Unless Flanders in real into Perth or has a mancrush on Serong, can't see us getting ahead of the numerous Vic clubs that would be interested.

Ash Johnson is one who can be a total bust if he doesn't bring a new level of professionalism, especially in this market where the news will be after him.

But he could also be very cheap with exceptional return.

We need to clear it with the board members here who will claim him as a win if it works but lament the recruiting teams failings if it doesn't first.

Here it is - Flanders brother lives in Perth (or at least he did when he was drafted in 2019)

Someone mentioned Flanders may have family in Perth. I vaguely remember pre-draft there was a linkage reference to Freo because of that. It was the same draft we had early picks like Young/Serong.

This article shows he has very good endurance which was one of the concerns mentioned pre-draft. Running under 6mins for 2km is going good.

The AFL is looking into giving Tasmania access like father sons to any junior who's Tasmanian father who has played 100 AFL games anywhere.
My honest view is this would be borderline redundant anyway tbh. I am making some assumptions though:
  • Tasmania has an academy similar to NSW and Queensland. Let's not sugar coat it retention will be difficult so getting locals onto the list is essential.
  • The AFL won't strip clubs with existing father son rights from clubs whether the player's father has played 100 games for that club.

Where they already live in Tasmania they'd be in their academy anyway, while when not in Tasmania at the time they'd most likely pick their father's club anyway.

Only situation I can see a player picking Tasmania and said player isn't living in Tasmania is if their father had played the 100 games across two or more clubs and they weren't eligible for anyone else.

Or if Tasmania is able to sign the young men to longer terms with better financial deals as marketing figures given their fathers could well be the likes of Nick Reiwoldt.
