Unofficial Preview 2022 Mid-Season Rookie Draft

Our clearances were absolutely horrible yesterday. There was one passage where Draper just grabbed the ball from the pack and waltzed out of the middle while all our mids just looked at him and did nothing. In the first half it was just one Essendon clearance after another. We seemed to be content to just let them take the clearance every time and try and win it back on the turnover. A bit reminiscent of Richmond a couple of years ago. I’d prefer it if we at least broke even on the clearances. So maybe targeting a big-bodied clearance beast with a long-term future in the MSD isn’t such a bad idea

There’s definitely others that have been performing better, but I wouldn’t mind us looking at Josh Green from GWS VFL side.

He’s still young (20 in a few months) and starting to really develop some inside craft, like (but not at the same level) as his brother. He’s not putting up massive numbers, but every time I’ve seen him I’ve been impressed. Much like his brother he is a brute at 192cms, but he also has the ability to play forward and defence.

It could also help us chasing his brother in a years time when he is OOC.

I thought Josh Green looked really good against us in the VFL last week. One of the reasons their mids creamed us.

A couple from the SANFL worth looking at:
Connor Ballenden - Key forward
Kaiden Brand - key defender
Harry Boyd - ruckman
Josh Carmichael - clearance goal kicking mid

Definitely, we are lacking badly in the inside beasts who know how to extract the ball , especially at bounces , aside from Adam’s and DeGoey , the cupboard is very bare , the fact that our magnificent, yet ageing skipper had to go into the middle , and again show the way is there for all to see .
we've got Maynard awaiting deployment - and he's itching to play as a mid.

Yeah he has looked really good in patches.

His endurance and speed is also fairly impressive for such a big mid. Recording 21.6 yo-yo test score and and 3.075 seconds 20m sprint in his draft year.

So he’s obviously got an appetite to work hard. Which would be a welcome change from a bloke like Sier.

I didn’t watch the game, but it looks like Tyrone Thorne has started like a house on fire again for Peel Thunder in round 1. Recording 32 disposals and a goal.

Sure he is only 169cms and 60 kgs, but he has been racking up ridiculous numbers for a couple of years against big bodies. Only 20 as well.

Assuming he must still be primarily playing midfield, but I wonder if he could be a forward crumbing prospect at AFL level.

(As an aside looks like Freo have found another one by taking Karl Worner as a rookie based on the match reports)

I thought this was a typo. Went over to his WAFL page and he's listed as 169cms and 58kgs - wow!

3.075s is probably slower than Pendlebury.

Mitch O'Neill is having a fantastic season for South Adelaide. He's an inside midfielder with speed and good kicking. He's small at 178cm and 76kg but his production is huge averaging approx. 33.3 disposals (20 kicks/75% de), 6.3 clearances, 4.7 tackles, 7.7 inside 50s a game. We already have some size in midfield so he might be a really good compliment to our current group.

Can’t agree - I think we need a big bodied mid.

CB whose a little bigger, could get those numbers in the SANFL.

What size? We have De Goey who pushed forward and Crisp who spends a fair bit of time at half back.

De Goey, Crisp, Lipinski, Adams and Pendlebury all have size and rotate through.

I'm not saying we can't use another mature big bodied first possession midfielder btw.

But we have enough size in there we can also go for someone smaller with speed, strong clearance work and kicking skills.

I think we could use both. If Brown could kick and was faster he might be better at AFL level.

Strength more than size. Some of the smallish mids with good strength: Prestia, Neale, Rowell, types would be fantastic for our midfield.

That’s pretty quick for a bloke his size.

His brother only ran 3.00 flat and he’s a bit smaller.

I also doubt that many of the pure contested bulls in the league ie. Oliver, Wines etc would be running that quick.

Anyway I still like him and given his age he still has scope to develop.

Pendles was a 3.1 in his draft year I believe, so no, not slower. Anything close to 3 flat is reasonable, sub 3 is quick.

A players height and weight get used to argue a player isn't strong enough too often. It's often not the best indicator. I haven't seen enough of O'Neill to say either way btw.

Are you talking about height or body size? Because I wouldn’t say Pendlebury or Lipiniski play with size despite their height. On the other hand Adams is short but strong bodied.

I wouldn’t say no to more speed through the middle but I don’t think we have enough size in the midfield and that it limits how we can use both Crisp and De Goey and the issue gets exacerbated whenever there’s a midfield injury like it did against west coast.

Would ya give Nathan freeman a shot
