We’re happy for him to slide out of the first round.
Don't think you'd like hearing this up at the Lions, your recruiting staff look like they might be doing some overtime this season.....

Potential No.1 draft pick Will Ashcroft says a decision on whether to nominate as a father-son to Brisbane at the end of the year will be “weighed up pretty heavily” as he increasingly sets down roots in Melbourne.
The son of three-time Brisbane Lions premiership player Marcus Ashcroft, the 17-year-old is seen by recruiters as one of the standout players in this year’s draft pool but will have the choice to nominate for the club where his father played 318 AFL games.
Ashcroft grew up in Queensland, where his father was an assistant coach and later football manager of the Gold Coast Suns.
However, the family moved to Melbourne at the start of 2018 and Ashcroft completed his school studies at Brighton Grammar last year.
He has recently commenced a business and sports management course at Deakin University in Burwood.

“I love it in Melbourne. I think I’m a Melburnian now – I’ve been here for long enough,” Ashcroft said on Saturday.

“I’m at uni here, my whole family’s here and I’m playing footy here so at the moment I’m just trying to take it day by day, to be honest.

“I think it (the father-son decision) is in the back of my mind at the moment.

“It’s not at the forefront. I’m just trying to improve my game and looking forward to the year ahead.

“But I think when the time comes it will be weighed up pretty heavily.

“It’s a pretty big decision for myself and my family. So it’s definitely there but it’s nowhere near time to think about that.”

One senior recruiter said Ashcroft was a player who “doesn’t have too many deficiencies” as a midfielder with good endurance who can win the ball on the inside and outside of the contest. Some VFL matches with the Lions this year are a possibility, but Ashcroft said he was very much committed to playing with the Dragons in the NAB League and continuing his growth as a player after lining up for only “10 or 12” games across the past two years.

If you want my honest opinion.

I’ll buy you a crows membership for the next 10 years if he doesn’t nominate Brisbane.

It’s a fluff piece article, written to wind up Lions supporters, and Ashcroft is just being politic.

Kid came up here when he finished Uni and did 2 weeks quarantine, and was out training with our boys on the first day he was allowed out.

He could have waited until we dropped our border requirements and came up without having to do quarantine, but he chose to do quarantine.

He was up here before our draftees, and both he and Fletcher were part of the club match sims while the draftees were still doing laps. I know this, because I was there watching.

Ashcroft will be a Lion.

Oh btw, and not being nasty Jen, no team is paying 2 firsts for JDG. Most teams probably wouldn’t even take him if you packaged a first with him, and tried to sell him off to the lowest bidder.
Sorry... that's not what I meant.

I mean an extra 1st, meaning we'd have two 1sts (including our own)

Kobe never takes a backward step even against the bigger bodies.....I think we know someone who might have to elevate him up their board eventually...;)
Yeah sorry I have him too low 😂

You might have heard of this kid before, Tsatas was it? Yeah he went alright
It appears as though the Oakleigh Chargers boys performed really well at the testing. Elijah Tsatas did well in the 20m but struggled in the yo-yo test.
George Wardlaw did well in the jumping but was down on the 20m and yo—yo.
I’ve been told that probably the best overall performer was Riley Voulanas….he was right up there in the 20m and yo-yo test…..I’ve identified him as a real bolter for this seasons draft previously.

He got 0.02 less than Tsatas in the 20 meter sprint, I'd say that's considerably better than most expected

Where are u seeing the results?

I think Tsatas got 20.8 which isn’t horrible

20.8 is definitely not horrible, but the testing showed that there are certainly better athletes out there and if they can also play, then we need to keep an eye on them. Ultimately you need to be able to play footy.

He ran a 2.90 20m which is absolutely elite.

There really isn't many better athletes out there....

It was actually 2.93 I was given the wrong info at the time

From what I have been told there were 5 or 6 that ran a 20m sub 3 as well including a couple of bottom agers. I haven’t heard much about the agility test. Any strong performances?

Yet..

Still plenty of time haha.

Or unless JDG leaves and get 2 x 1st rounders. Lemmey has to be first picked by the pies if he is available, then go with best mid.
But Lemmey is my 1st priority... just need to keep a watchful eye out on those who need a key forward like North.
Key back is much more pressing as we have some young key forwards - Edwards, CCJ, Comben and Larkey is only 23. Hopefully we get a good look at them this year so we start to find out where they are at.

Wouldn’t surprise if we tried to turn our early 1st round pick into a couple of 1st rounders.

Is the Ace of Spades your No. 1 SA kid?

There is zero chance he is. I would be very very surprised if he is taken top 20. Ordinary runner who can only play mid. Super inside the contest though. Might be the best pure ball winner in the draft but his flaws are a worry.

Harry Lemmey.

Lemmy is the lead singer of Motörhead and Ace of Spades is a song of theirs.
Is this another reference I'm too young to understand?
I would've gone with 'The Game' or 'King of Kings' for the Triple H connection

he single handedly made SA more competitive in the midfield in the u19's series last year, i think people are underselling his abilities, also was really good in the u17's games, performing in big games for me is more important than combine results(although i dont know his combine results and if they are good or bad tbh), but we'll let his footy do the talking this year and see where he lands?

P.S. but i agree, if Lemmey has a big year he might go top 3 or so potentially.

Clearly footy performance is more important than combine stuff. However depending on who you are and what you will be asked to do at the next level certain measurements can be very important. Arlo Draper is a brilliant example. He tested terribly for aerobic conditioning and as a result was drafted purely on what he could be as a forward. That ended up being quite late. If he was judged purely on field he was one of SA's most exciting players. It can certainly hurt you but Adam could prove me wrong of that there is not doubt.

Ripping kid by the way and I'm behind him all the way. As professional as it gets for his age so whatever he has he will get out of himself. Clubs will certainly love his character.

Didn’t read Jens post that way at all.
Her post was clumsily written, but I assumed she meant 2 firsts in total, not two for JDG (as that's insanity).

EARLY NO.1 PICK CONTENDERS SET TO STAR
BRISBANE father-son prospect Will Ashcroft heads a group of four draftees who will start the season as the leading No.1 pick contenders in 2022.

Ashcroft, the son of Lions champion and three-time premiership player Marcus, is tied to the club under the rule and trained there over summer. The powerful midfielder starred at under-17s level last year and is likely to make a call on his nomination later in the season.

A father-son has never been bid on with the No.1 pick, with Sam Darcy (who last year received a bid at No.2 from the Giants) the earliest ever father-son taken.

Club recruiters feel there is another three players who will start the season in the mix for the top pick, with Oakleigh Chargers midfield pair George Wardlaw and Elijah Tsatas and West Adelaide tall forward Harry Lemmey the standouts heading into the 2022 draft season.

Wardlaw is a tough inside midfielder who played at NAB League level last season and also performed well for Vic Metro in the under-17s program, where he excelled with his contested disposals, while Tsatas' brilliant speed, run and carry was also on show for Vic Metro.

Lemmey's credentials are already strong as a young key position player, with the 199cm forward debuting at senior SANFL level last year. He finished the season with 17 goals from seven games for West Adelaide's under-18s, including 3.2 from 20 disposals and 10 marks in the preliminary final.

The SANFL under-18s competition begins this weekend while the NAB League has a round of practice games before the start of its season next week.

Powerful Murray Bushrangers prospect Brayden George, a forward/midfielder, is another who starts the season as a top-10 chance. – Callum Twomey
