I think the question is becoming are either Amiss or JVR worth first round picks or do they just stand out due to the lack of talls this year?
I would hate to miss a Georgiades or Allan quality tall but what if we’re just taking another Joel Houghton type?
I have no idea how we rate JVR but I wouldn’t be completely surprised to see us take Johnson & Erasmus or Rachelle or some combination of mid/forwards

Except that JVR is barely a top 15 talent (I think that’s a bit generous too tbh) and they’ll be many better options at Pick 10.

Johnson, Erasmus and Amiss will be in contention for our first two picks. Otherwise be prepared to be welcoming at least one Victorian to the club with a top ten selection.

I don’t get how is value / ranking can drop so much compared to a bunch of Vic boys who have played less than 10 games in the last two years.
I see that Amiss is ranked higher in all phantom drafts, but Wonder if JVR hadn’t been swung back then forward , league side , reserves , glandular fever and just played out of the square in the colts like Amiss did all year would he be rated higher…

Could be getting a steal !

People are seeing that JVR as a key back which lowers his draft value.

Have you watched NWM play? Played league for the bays in SANFL was unlucky not to make finals team.

Was just teasing Swiggy. I don't mind NWM and get why people like him (I loved watching Henry in his draft year), I just don't think what he brings is Freo's biggest need at the moment (it's almost the polar opposite imo). I want a ****ing premiership and in order to win one, we need to build a list that is capable.

Our list management team has done a pretty shit job of building a balanced list in all the years I've been following - crossing fingers they'll finally turn that around.

Obviously the first three picks are the fun ones, but we'll probably have at least a couple more after. Eric Benning will hopefully be one of them, but what about the other WA players...

Very rough draft ranges for them, it's more so I can highlight the other names we could look at...

There's a handy group of midfielders in the next grouping. Josh Browne (185cm, 78kg) is your ball winning, hard running midfielder. More highly rated at the start of the season, others have just gone past him. He'd be an O'Driscoll like pick up. Kade Dittmar (186cm, 86kg) is the classic inside bull, don't even need to have seen him play to know his strengths and weaknesses. James Tunstill (185cm, 76kg) is perhaps the most likely to be picked up of the three in the main draft, he's a versatile and balanced midfielder. I think teams will like their chances of developing him in a number of roles. And there's also Corey Warner (182cm, 74kg) who may well benefit from how well his brother has settled into AFL level and be picked up earlier. He's really strong athletically and uses his running ability well off a wing.

Plenty of small/half forwards available as always. Richard Farmer (175cm, 72kg) has his moments, and Kaden Harbour (177cm, 78kg) is excellent defensively. But I like Arthur Jones (178cm, 60kg) as a half forward, there's a bit of Liam Henry about him. Really raw but has a heap of talent. I reckon someone goes early on him. Jahmal Stretch (181cm, 62kg) is the other one and one we could have had in our NGA, he's developed nicely this year and can do it all on the ground and in the air.

And defensively, I quite like Bryce Watson (182cm, 71kg). Not a big need, but I think he could be a very good back pocket. He's a good rebounding defender already, but I think he has the game to play on the best small forwards too.

There are also a few talls like Josh Cripps, Luke Polson and Jake South but I probably wouldn't take any of them. Only if we somehow miss out on all the others and Benning too.

Imo his athleticism compared to others will see him struggle at AFL level.

He won't be able to use his size as much against men who are 195cm+.

I didn’t see his combine results, did he test poorly / average ?
Or is it that he was a lot more physically advanced than his competition this year and you think he won’t have that same advantage in AFL ?

My comments are based on my observations when I’ve seen him play and nothing else. I haven’t seen his combine results either.

Doesn’t mean he won’t make it but it will affect his draft position. I just don’t think he’s in the frame for our first two picks and wouldn’t be surprised if he’s there and we overlook him with our third.

It's the Freo big footy way, build them up and then knock them down hard. And in JVR's case before we have had a chance to even draft him.

Some of the vitriol that is directed at most of these guys pre and post draft is irrational to say the least.

I've never built JVR up - I've always stated he isn't a top 15 pick. He doesn't show the athletic attributes top 15 KPFs show imo.

No where but here is he in the conversation for a top ten pick. Most draft watchers have him between 20 and 30.

Is it his size/height?
His sprint time?
Is it his reach?
Vertical leap?

Agreed he is not a top 15 pick but he could definitely go anywhere after 15 - think you maybe looking too much into stats though as there a lot of perceived - later than top 20 picks that have performed way better than the athleticly gifted …. I like a footballer to play footy.
I reckon JVR can play football as evidenced.

The whole "top 15 pick" is a pretty loose category really, especially these past few years. It's fine to make a call on it for a bit of interest, but I wouldn't be holding on to that too tightly or any great conviction particularly given the lower levels of evidence available this year and last.

Was Kysaiah Pickett a top 15 selection prior to Melbourne picking him there?
 
Can someone tell me what the knocks on Angus Sheldrick are? Every game I see he appears to kill it, kicks goals, tough inside and wins his own footy. Are his limitations athletically?

Would be an absolute steal at current projections.

Just strikes me as a natural footballer in the Barlow build.
