How much midfield time was Rayner getting?
He looked to be playing predominantly midfield.

He really is running much better. At one point, the play was transitioning from one end to the other, and Rayner came off the 50m line in the defensive 50, provided an overlap outside the winger, who was being boxed in, called for the ball (right in front of me in the small stand) as he ran past, received the handball passed over the defender, ran on to half forward, and kicked the ball in to the forward 50.

But did he hit his man, briz?

The kid is quick...

Running machine Harry Sharp has set a new Brisbane Lions Club record, clocking a sub nine-minute 3km time trial time at the weekend.

The 183cm midfielder was equally destructive with his first timed run at the Lions, beating reigning champ Jarrod Berry home by almost a minute with Hugh McCluggage third.

I'd love to know if any AFL listed player has ever run faster 3 & 2 kilometre time trials.
Blicavs had a 5:39 2km time while at the Cats and a sub 8.5 min 3 km time trial in junior footy. Geelong switched to "as far as you can do in 15 minutes" instead of time trials, so he was never measured at the AFL level over 3 km.

Sharp therefore had a better 2km time (5:28), but "sub 9 minutes" isn't exactly as good as "sub 8.5 minutes" for 3 km - although the latter is anecdotal, so it wouldn't surprise me if Sharp is quicker over both.

So he's quicker over the first 2km, but around forty seconds slower for the last km, if the story is true.

Disappointing. Needs to work on his tank.

Sharp ran 8.52 apparently.
I am assuming you mean sub 8.30 for Blicavs?
Not 8.50?

I think you're massively jumping to a conclusion off a shaky anecdote. Surely you've been around footy long enough to know that everyone puts mayo on any footy story, especially high school coaches. ;)

When looking for the above references I found Blicavs' school times and they had him at 9:43 for 3.1km as a 16 year old, hence the caveat around the story.

Yeah, sub 8 1/2 minutes according to a Geelong recruiter who heard it from Cam Guthrie's dad who coached him in high school half a decade earlier...

3.1k is an odd distance.
Quite a big difference between sub 8.30 and 9.43 for and extra 100m.
So he improved a lot.

Thought that was clearly tongue in cheek.

None of my posts are to be taken seriously. Ever. It's like you don't even know me. Way to hurt someone's feelings dlanod

Needs a smiley or something.

That wouldn't even be in the top 10 of dumbest posts on the Lions board this off-season, so no alarms went off at all!

I think Harry choosing AFL over footy is a good decision for him.
He is a very good athlete but to make a living out of running is very difficult and to do that he would have to improve lots.
As football followers we get excited about how he puts our guys to the sword in some running drills

Link below to see Harry Sharp Profile taken from World Athletics org. for those interested in PB's, Season Bests, Progression & Results

These are his PB's
600 Metres 1:24.74 Llanberris Athletics Reserve, Ballarat (AUS) 14 DEC 2019
800 Metres 1:58.58 Llanberris Athletics Reserve, Ballarat (AUS) 12 OCT 2019
1500 Metres 3:57.91 Melbourne (AUS)20 DEC 2018
3000 Metres 8:42.80 Duncan Mackinnon Reserve, Glenhuntly, Melbourne (AUS) 07 NOV 2019
2000 Metres Steeplechase 5:55.67 Adelaide (AUS) 08 DEC 2017
3000 Metres Steeplechase 9:07.74 Lakeside Stadium, Melbourne (AUS) 29 FEB 2020
...........
To put Harry's 3K in perspective the Australian record is 7.28.02 held by Stewart McSweyn
The world record is 7.20.67 by Daniel Komen from Kenya.
So on those times Harry would need a 600 meters start
I know he is young but that is a lot of ground to make up
Better off using that time to hopefully get a solid AFL career going.
The pay is also way way better even if he does not play a single senior game
...

In regards to the discussion about Sharp.

I believe the kid can football. He doesn’t appear to be a soft, outside type that avoids contact.

In the drills and scratch match I saw him dive on loose balls, putting his body on the line to win the ball.

Kids not afraid of contact.

I believe most of his education will revolve around skills and game plan. Where to position himself, etc.

I don’t expect to see him close to the first team until his third year on the list. And that won’t worry me.

I gather he is more of a steeplechaser and his times are competitive in that discipline it seems to me. Aust open record for 3,000m steeplechase is 8.21.98. His time as a 16/17 year old early last year is pretty decent.

Great to hear he's not afraid of some physicality as that is very hard to coach IMO eg. Schache/Ballenden.

MRobbo has tweeted a vid of he and Richy bowling over the coach, who was sitting on the sidelines:oops:

(not quite the way to express your love for your coach boys;).....at least he got up laughing!:D)
Yep, that was right in front of us.
Fages through in a couple of cheeky ones while on the ground too.
I was quite concerned while it was happening because his head was within a foot of the concrete slab of the dugout.
