Definitely agree with you there mate, IMO he's got the tools to be a valuable part of our side as we look to the future.
Hopefully the penny has dropped and he's lifting his training standards and matchday application to the level required.
If Paddy, SPS, LOB, McGovern & even Kennedy can lift their intensity and consistency it'll go a long way to our side taking the next step - hopefully they do so.

Would love to see some footage of Dow with the gloves on to compare, but when you're holding the pads and giving them a few knocks back, you want to be doing it with some intent. Walsh looked intense and driven, Dow looked like he wasn't sure what he was supposed to be doing. Watch them both on the footy field and it's exactly the same story.



He looked "ripped" in a couple of preseason pics last year too, but it was ultimately shown to be a bit of creative photography (which I'm sure every club does).

If Paddy is going to play as a contested mid, then he needs to have the frame to bust through a pack. He doesn't (yet). He still looks like a kid who is filling out, which is a little disappointing for a player coming into his fourth year. Maybe there's a valid reason for it (like the club trying to repurpose him for a slightly different role), but it's going to take a bit to convince me he's ready to take the next step.


DISCLAIMER: I'm not writing Dow off, I love what he is capable of doing - just getting a little impatient with how long it's taking him to find his mojo.

Um, maybe because he is a kid that’s filling out.....
For comparison, statistically he’s had a better first three years than Kouta.
Kouta didn’t have a breakout year until his fourth season playing AFL, he was built like Tarzan from the get go.

He holds the pads up poorly......FFS

From that vision Walsh looks like he couldn’t punch his way out of a wet paper bag. Don’t think it will have any bearing on what he produces on the footy field though.

Just as it shouldn’t Dow’s

You've missed my point entirely, and statistics have nothing to do with it. I'm simply highlighting that from the little I've seen of Dow this preseason, it doesn't look to me like he's made any significant gains either physically or with his intensity.

Maybe what I've seen isn't representative of his efforts, but Dow was always likened to Dangerfield in his physicality and style of play and coming into his fourth season I was really hoping and expecting to see him kick it up a gear. I haven't. Yet. Fingers crossed.

If Dow becomes what we all hope he can become, our midfield starts to dominate.

If that is the only criteria , and i know its not, but Williamson and Marchbank should be in the conversation. IMO both are strong marks and good field kicks

Don’t think I’ve missed your point BB, and the response wasn’t specifically meant for you.
My main point is that he’s still only 21.
From all reports he has had to work on endurance since the get go. Endurance means kilometres in the legs. You don’t want to put too much size in to them whilst building up their tanks. Bit like a large dog breed, keep them light whilst they develop or you’re inviting leg problems in the future.
Get the miles in his legs then build his AFL “man” body. With most this takes four to five years.
Keep buffing them and they will shine, judge them from 23 when both they and the club have done the work required.

IMO Dow is never going to look like Dangerfield. Danger is much more even between upper and lower body- both powerful. Dow is very powerful in the lower half but is nowhere near the same size in his upper body. His natural somatotype predisposes him to this shape. Sure he can modify this natural tendency, and I am sure this has happened, but there are limits. We should not expect him to be as powerful as Dangerfield, but there again, not many players are.

Neither Teague or I would disagree with you - specifically mentioned Williamson being tried out on a wing against Brisbane where he performed well.
