Not sure if this is being sarcastic or not. If it isn't, the club was wrong and should have traded Mackay and kept Henderson. Henderson was being played in the wrong position and he has showed what happens when a player has a decent coach who backs them in and plays them in the correct position. I always thought Henderson had ability. He was mismanaged like many of our players by an incompetent coaching group(Pyke and Campo). I can't seriously see Mackay taking his game to a new level under Clarko. Actually he wouldn't trade for him.
I was being dead serious and thought that Henderson was a better wing option at the time

Hamill has more upside than Sholl in my book , sholl is a great ball user but lacks speed and size for an outside type and he’s very outside

If he can really knuckle down and work on his defensive game, I have no issues with that. The SANFL is a gritty competition as is, so a perfect environment to do that in. Could maybe become our next Laird if he can eventually break into our side (whenever that will be). I dont think he will ever reach the defensive heights of a Luke Brown. But a small defender who's an elite user never goes astray/

Better defender
Competitive
Super quick, which we lack
Does something with the ball

Hamill is actually the one I wanted to play lots of footy this year. Surely we could plug him in at half back like 1997 Simon Goodwin.

Do you have any posts you can link to that backs this up?

This entire board hated Henderson and were cheering for his sacking.

Hmmm...

When exactly did they decide that? In 2014 when Mackay signed his 4 year deal?

Ricky came out of contract in 2016 after a disappointing season. Next year we made the grand final.

Hard to fault what the club did between the hiring of Walsh and September 29th 2017.

22.7 disposal average is hardly disappointing

Henderson was our best player against West Coast when we lost that minor round game and was dropped for the finals so he wouldn’t trigger another contract.

It’s symbolic of a club making poor decisions and you keep referring to Mackays selection as vindication that he’s a decent player, when this is the same club that had to have a review and 3 senior people kicked out.

Mackay would not have reached 200 games at a decent club. The fact you keep supporting his selection shows you also have poor football judgement, which was also shown by picking the oldest round 1 side you could come up with. Problem is you can’t get the boot like the rest of them, instead we are stuck with your acceptance of mediocrity

Strong words. He's coming from a long way back to not even get a look in for a Marsh game.
Sums up his career to this point though. Does some brilliant things, but struggles to stay consistently involved over 4 quarters. Part of that has been how we've used him, but he'd want to improve his consistency if he's given a bigger role.

That explains no Gooch

I have to admit, I really don't remember Godden speaking at all last year. Maybe I just missed his press conferences, or more likely I suspect Campo and Hart took all the assistant coach media spots. But from the couple times i've heard Godden speak so far I've noticed how exceptionally clear he seems with his expectations of his team and his players. Its quite refreshing after the smoke and mirrors BS we've seen in years gone by.

Often that kind of clarity can be a sharp knife for some players (I suspect Jordy is probably licking his wound right now a bit), but if it cuts through problem of our key young players not knowing their roles then it will push this group forwards lightyears faster then what Campo was achieving.

I'd rather hear honest feedback rather than the generic bullshit "strong side, couldn't fit him in, etc..."

I wouldn't expect him to be here next year at this point. What's his contract status?
I think its too early to call, but one way or another we should get an answer. This for me is just a firm kick up the a$$ for a talented/mature player that's so far underperformed his expectations. And one that's probably 2 offseason's late.

Jordy would now have to realize that he's not in the best 22, hell as of today he's not in the best 34 (26 + Emergencies + Tex, Smith, Sloane, Doedee). And like it or not Godden just gave him the best gift he could get at this point in his career. The hot and ugly spotlight pointed directly at him. He can either use it to light the fire he needs to raise his game. Or wither away under its heat!

Every day of the week! Tell me what I need to do and let me get to work!
The players love Godden apparently. I was told he is clear with them, shows genuine care and is intent on making them better players (I'd hope that applies to all our coaches but campo showed otherwise).
Now I'm interested to see if Godden has any tactical nous at AFL level.
More freedom. More responsibility. More pressure.
