This is definitely true. What's worse, though, is the players went out in sympathy with them for most of the QF as well.

Win that game against the far from stellar Pies and all the evidence of what followed suggests that we could have saluted again this year.

Hmmmmm...maybe...I think its fair to say that Richmond were the best side in the comp and deserved their flag. We were close, but not close enough IMO.

Add Toma to our group in that prelim (given he doesn't miss through suspension, having never had to play in a SF) and we're potentially another three goals up at half-time, though.

To me, it made a massive difference that Richmond's early onslaught in the third basically had them only just over a goal down within five minutes. If they were still four goals down at that point, it could have looked quite different. Psychologically, it seemed to me that the narrow margin at that point (given our first half dominance) potentially emboldened them whilst simultaneously deflating our crew.

Not denying they were good value for their flag. Just feel that our really good shot at it was not lost on PF night this year. Pies debacle was an enormous opportunity lost. And, of course, the Woods went on to frank that rich vein of 'form' in their PF as well.

Agreed. People downplaying the blokes ability screams of not actually being aware of his talent.

He will slot straight into the team, and will definitely ease the pain of losing TK.
I've got a couple of StKilda mates who are filthy he's left. I keep reminding them they have Abbott in return off us!

"....Steven the cut-price replacement whose best football is as damaging as West Coast-bound Tim Kelly...."

I don't think so, Jim.
I disagree. His best is very damaging. But do we get his best that is the question. What if Tim struggles badly next season and Steven is back at his best? Looks like a masterstroke from us.

Why not? Top 5 in the Brownlow only two seasons ago. He is gunna suprised the hell out of a lot of Cats supporters next year.

Never been All Australian, turning 30 beginning of next year, coming off a pretty poor season last year...there are reasons why he can be good but also reasons why he may struggle with his consistency.

His best has never been consistently as good as Kelly's best.
It is extremely unlikely that next year, at 30, after a season out of the game, he is going to catch up to Kelly unless Kelly falls in a heap.

We were never going to get an established player as outstanding as Kelly in the kind of cut-price deal that scored us Jack, though.

In the circumstances, I truly believe he is the best you could hope to glean from such a small outlay. And, if he does get back close to his previous output (four-time B&F winner, two-time AA squad member), we could end up with a real difference-maker through the middle of the ground.

Anyway, there is of course only one way to truly settle his worth.

What is his Champion Data player rating?

Speaking of Kelly does anyone have a feel for his 2km time trial times when he was with us? Where did he rate?
Eagles were very disappointed in his 2km recently and have been very tight lipped about his time - word has it he was well back in the pack.
Apologies if this has been covered already

We don't do a 2km time trial and switched things up 5 years ago now (unless we changed this preseason)

This is from an article last year but doesn't give results - someone else may be able to provide those:

The 1.2km shuttle run, together with a 15-minute run, comprise the two major aerobic tests the players are subjected to upon their return to the club.

Physical performance manager Scott Murphy took Cats Media through what both tests entail.

15-minute run

“The foundation running test that we do would be the 15-minute run,” Murphy said.

“They run as far as they can in 15 minutes and we’ve been doing that for four years now.”

“We’ve got some very, very good runners in the team like Mark Blicavs, Sam Menegola and Gryan Miers who was a good recruit last year. "

The test is used to benchmark the players against their own previous times.

“It favours the smaller, running type athletes heavily,” Murphy says.

“Tom Hawkins – it’s not his favourite 15 minutes of his life. He still has a level that we know he should be at and if he’s there we’re pretty happy.

The only results I could find were from an AFL website article:

The Cats now have a 15-minute run as their test of choice, with Blicavs beating Irish teammate Mark O'Connor by 150m when they undertook the test before Christmas.

Both Dangerfield and Steven are known for being attacking players. They will need to be balances out by more defensive players. Common sense I would of thought.

Dangerfield isn't exactly a defensive wizard. Our lack of defensive pressure cost us this year.

We need more lazy one way runners, the training must be all wrong.

What does it have to do with training?

Yea, half a dozen more lazy Dangerfields please.
Yeah. Worked for richmond

There’s a reason why you’re going on my ignore list

Jack Steven reports seem too good to be true but it is at least encouraging

As is Cocky training main group. 2020 is now or never for him

Would love Cocky to be our TK replacement and Stevens the bonus.

We can all dream.
