Starting to change my thoughts on Papley. Have always thought we should just hold him to his contract unless a totally overwhelming offer is received from Carlton.

Now I am starting to think we just take pick 9 and move on. I would say that is it though, none of this 'pick 25 goes back to Carlton' crap.

Use the trade period to see if we can leverage North's pick.

If Papley really is willing to go anywhere and we can just get the best deal, that is very decent of him and we shouldn't waste that opportunity.

As an approaching 50yo, red blooded old veteran of 250+ lousy football matches for the one club, conservative values, fond memories of the Old South, I really find the derogatory talk about Paps and his missus bloody offensive.

If Dusty put his hand up to play at Sydney and Richmond asked for Papley we’d, all of us, drop him like an old spud.

These people are humans with lives. Have some ****ing respect.

i think everyone is just having a little bit of a laugh and some people should relax a bit.

If you can't tease a bloke about being under the thumb ....
I guess, but the lines can be genuinely blurred at times.

Really sheets me that Cameron got injured this year precisely when we needed him to play.
If he'd played 10 games this year we could have gotten something decent.
Now we'll likely get a pick upgrade from 80 to 70 or some such. :(

Absolutely agree Paps deserves more respect .. but
I dont understand why he's nominated a single club?
Respect goes both ways, The Swans have been great for Paps so imo, Paps should be open to being traded to the Melbourne club which offers the Swans the best deal.
Maybe he is??

well he supposedly hasn't now. He has said he is happy to go anywhere in melbourne that will have him.

Which is actually pretty bloody decent of him. So if that is the true, I have kind of changed my mind about letting him go.

I do wonder what happens though when teams come out during the trade period and start saying 'we couldnt come to financial terms' ...

I read an interesting point that we may never get a better offer for a small forward than pick 9.

Lappin made a similar point on twitter yesterday. Saying how no small forward has ever been traded for such a high pick.

I would argue that there are very few recent comparable examples to Papley.

some people compare charlie cameron going for pick 12. I would argue Papley is a slightly better player than Cameron when he was traded. Cameron also wasn't contracted for 4 years.

Devon Smith got traded for pick 11 and future 3rd, with 2 first round picks going back to gws. I think they are very comparable players - but again, Papley is contracted to us for 4 years which dramatically increases his value (to us).

His value to us is huge!

leading goal kicker

inspiration on the field
4 year contract - all things being equal, the best 4 years he has
core of our 3-5 year plan to win a flag

He's worth a lot more than p9 to us - How this trade plays out is an unknown

The

The sweet spot is Jason Ball, Darren Jolly & Mike Pyke

Serviceable ruckman providing first use to a top-class midfield.

Second this...

Reality is. Overpaying a ruckman means you lose out elsewhere (e.g. midfield). Stats show that hit outs won doesn't = midfield advantage. Once the ball hits the deck there are many ways to win the ball.

Ruck is one position I wouldn't overspend on, particularly if you're overpaying, it impacts your ability to retain high end talent in positions that have a greater contribution to the win e.g midfield, key forward.

I agree with all of this. Ive posted a few times that I would only be listening to offers of two 1sts.

But the stuff yesterday, as well as Papley now supposedly being happy to go to any Melbourne club, makes me think as long as we get pick 8 or 9 then we may be best to just do it and move on.

It is frustrating and a pain, but keeping an unhappy player could be a serious issue as well.

I think if we had a good midfield, Sinclair would look perfectly fine as a 1st ruck - a bit like the richmond rucks. It just looks diabolical when you are combining a mediocre ruck with a (below) mediocre midfield.

IF we had a good midfield? We do have a good midfield. In fact our midfield is great!

We do? Kennedy has been legendary, but past his prime once 2020 rolls around, Parker is not a #1 mid, he needs 1 or two other ahead of him, jones is gone.
Hewitt, heeney (& mills?) Are emerging, but that group are not top 5 in the league. I don't even know how many midfield are ahead of them... but there are a few
