Yeah I posted that we should take Smith “early” a few pages back too. Most draft watchers have him pegged outside the top 20 and I can’t understand why. Maybe we’re missing something?
We're not missing anything other than the usual groupthink. Clayton Oliver was ranked outside the top 20, until he wasn't. But "The Roar Is Back" and I had him much higher much earlier. Trust your judgment.

Best available at 17 will be players slipping to us.Smith bit of reach at 17 no one got him that high.

I suspect that like last year a highly rated kid will slip. This year is weird because of the dominance by interstate teams in the early picks and the number of quality inside mids. So it's likely that the sort of kid we want will slip. You only reach in the first round if there is something special you know. Each quality player adds to depth, doesn't matter what they do. Over time you adjust the team to play to your abilities. And if necessary you trade to improve squad balance. We're pretty well balanced going forward so I want to see best available.

We won't have pick 17, more like 20 after f/sons and academy bids. Smith is not a reach. Groupthink has him lower because he wasn't in the initial Vic Country squad and there were questions on his running ability and pace. He just kept performing all year, smashed the one game he got in the Champs, and dispelled all doubts at the Combine.

After the top 8, it's very even for the next 20-25. Smith is a better prospect and fit for us than the likes of Valente and Hately for mine. Better than Duursma, who I've been a fan of since early in the season. More proven, higher-production midfielder than Collier-Dawkins. Bigger, stronger, more powerful than Hill, McHenry, West, O'Halloran, Stocker, Butters, Jones and Stack.

We should draft him, if he's even still there.

Well whatever happens and despite who "slips" to our pick, we can't afford to pick any more flankers.

If it's a skilled Ben Lennon type that "slips" (I put this in quotations because the ranking system is BS, so what really is slipping..?) to our pick but a proven midfielder/ball-winner is there that "experts" have rated to go perhaps later, for the love of god we need to pick the midfielder.

How is his kicking. Looks like he can roost it okay, but his hand is very underneath when he kicks, not usually a sign of a good kicker. Have you heard or noticed if that is an issue?

I remember reading when one of the talent followers was asked who had that Max Rooke / Joel Selwood type mongrel in them, the answer was Ely Smith.
(Obviously a Geelong supporter asking) don't let the Selwood comparison turn us off.

Yep Essendrugs all over Ely Smith if he's still there at 34. If so I hope O'Halloran slips to our second. It's a fascinating draft this one. If it is inside mids we need, there's a few decent ones around our picks. You'd think we'd be after Stocker or RCD with our first.

3 votes for essendrug reference.

Heard on another forum we should take Valente over smith because he’s a leader and better kick they argued smith kicks at 50% or under too much yet Valente is 70% and they win similar amounts of ball

Corey Ellis is a better kick than Nat Fyfe.

If they win the same amount of ball wouldn’t you take the leader and better kick
I'd take the bigger, stronger, faster one who I reckon will win more ball at the top level. Smith had the lowest turnover rate by foot in the TAC.

Any bids on players will only end up that player jumping ahead, so 'live' players will end up the same imo.

Selwood is a gun. Getting a 'Selwood' at pick 17 it would be nice.

Yeah, but people are reading draft rankings that have Blakey, Quaynor, Thomas et al in them, with us still having pick 17.
